India Gate “Classic” which comes in a brown bag is the one to buy. It is long grain and aged with a fantastic aroma. All other India Gate rice are just not up to the mark.

Classic retails for around $20 for 5 kgs bag and it’s worth every bit of the asking price. It is available at most Indian Grocery shops, I have not seen it stocked in any Woolworths or Coles supermarkets.

    • LOL

    • You need to live somewhere else. Blacktown has 9% population who definitely eat Indian food every day.

      • Blacktown definitely has more than 9% of people who eat Indian food.

    • Rather Indian food than dim sum on a public transport.

    • Says a guy from blacktown. Thats some serious skill, you should think of career in NSW Police Dog Unit. Could be helpful in catching some serious criminals rather than sniffing on public transport.

  • That is a damn good price for a pretty decent rice. Much cheaper than what’s available in indian stores

I saw another brand of Rice (Taj) at $9.50 for 5kg

    India Gate

    some scandal there?

    • +2

Yes,by the Britishers who ruled there for a long time.

    • Or the name of a monument :S

  • Whats the usual price?

    • Probably around $15, the "classic" one is more expensive and about $20.

    Costco sells it for $9

  • I always buy basmati rice from indian grocery stores. $10-11 for 5kg. Never paid over $11.

  • +5

This is an everyday basmati rice. Inferior than Premium and Classic.

All bagged from the same container. Different bag

    • +4

No! There's a big range in the basmati quality

  • Can confirm same price in burwood nsw as well.

  • +3

Costco has been selling this for around $9. Ofcourse you have to be member so my comment is only targetting the Costco users before you start begging.

    • +1

      Please…?!?

  • From side packaging it seems to be "Dubar" variety (small grain - not too ideal for Biryani). Might as well go with Classic if you plan to make Biryani.

  • +4

not a deal its not the classic that everyone seems to be comparing it to. its an inferior quality so may be worth around the 10 mark like other everyday basmatis.

    Jasmine everyday

    • Medium grain everyday.

    I want erotic basmati

Maharajah one is $8.75 for 5kg at Coles.

    • +3

That ain’t true Basmati though. The rice turns out very sticky no matter how little water you use. And no aroma either, real Basmati tends to be long and aromatic.

      • It’s good enough for me.

    • +2

I’m no food snob, I used to buy this thinking basmati rice is all the same. No, there’s a big difference, go to an Indian grocer and buy a good rice, I was surprised of how good it is.

    • Yeah, that ain't no shit

    • It's 18.95 for a 5kg bag here in Canberra.

      • That's about the RRP, but Coles/WW often have it half price ($8.75)

  • +3

This rice is not good quality… This is far inferior to Classic and Premium Indian Gate rice.

  • +2

Not worth buying, I have tried this one.
No where close to India Gate classic or premium.

  • Not a deal. It's available at this price almost all the time.

  • I've seen another brand of rice at $8.75 at Coles - Casey Central
