    Cheap as chips

Many retailers sell 240GB SSDs cheaper. Functionally no difference between them at this bottom end of the market.

Msy sells the 860 evo for $75, which is well worth the extra $10

    SSD EXPERT ON OzBargain …
Need to ask SSD question to OzBargain poster.
Who is SSD EXPERT ON OzBargain … or Where to ask?

    • Just ask here, why waste time asking who to ask… Or just ask Google!

      • Sorry - didnt want to hijack this particular post…

        PROBLEM –

CAN’T GET KINGSPEC 512GB SSD TO WORK LIKE SAMSUNG 860 EVO SSD IN EXTERNAL USB3 CASE. CAN’T PLAY MOVIE (mp4) ON TV.

        SET UP-

I have 2 identical usb3 external 2.5inch cases. <ORICO 2.5" 2139U3 Transparent SATA HDD Mobile Hard Disk Drive Enclosure USB 3.0>

        I have 2 new SSD
        1. KingSpec SSD 512GB 2.5" SATA3 P/N P3-512
        2. Samsung 860 EVO SSD 1TB.

        • Both SSD have the same format and can be seen on the computer “Disk Management”.
        • I have loaded the same video (MP4) and music (MP3) onto both SSD.
        • The computer can play both video (MP4) and music (MP3) from both KingSpec and Samsung SSD.

On the TV (connected via USB3)
        1. The Samsung SSD will play both video (MP4) and music (MP3).
        2. The KingSpec will NOT play video (MP4) or music (MP3).
        a. The TV reports Kingspec SSD with “No movie files on current device. Select another category.”

PROBLEM SOLVING TODATE – THAT DIDN’T WORK
        1. I have tried swapping the SSDs in the external cases.
        2. I have tried swapping the cables in the external cases.
        3. I have tried swapping the SSDs in the external cases to different usb ports on the TV.
        4. I have tried cloning the SSDs content to ensure exact copy.

        Any thoughts welcomed….
Any advice on where to better post this welcomed ….

        • Sounds to me to be a compatibility issue…
The board in the external USB case probably not compatible with the KingSpec SSD…

When you state "The computer can play both video (MP4) and music (MP3) from both KingSpec and Samsung SSD." do you mean when the drives are in the enclosure - or just connected to the PC via SATA cable?

are they formatted to the same block size (not that that should really matter) - as they are both NTFS (and not fat which some older TVs require) - and if you've cloned them i assume this is at the block level

in regards to the problem solving that didn't work…

RE 2. I have tried swapping the cables in the external cases.
          you mean the USB cables?

probably better to post on whirlpool too for help, unless its directly related to the item on sale.

          • @wisc: Thanks for your reply …

              yeah compatibility issue…

how does it go when connected to the computer via the enclosure?
              still the same issue?

              • @wisc: Thanks WISC for your thoughts … Here more specifics….

On the PC (connected via USB3 Enclosure or internal SATA)
The computer can play both video (MP4) and music (MP3) from both KingSpec and Samsung SSD.

On the TV (connected via USB3 Enclosure)

                a. The TV reports Kingspec SSD with “No movie files on current device. Select another category.”

                Any further thoughts?

                • @Naga.Thai: spend another 20 bux and get another external case…its not worth the effort! but yeah its a compatibility issue between the TV and the case - which is just a little odd…

  • This has a slight advantage in being an MLC drive, compared to some of Sandisk's TLC offerings in a similar price bracket.

  • Is there any real-world difference with these, the WD Green, the Samsung Evos, etc?

I've been putting Greens in everyone's older PCs/Macbooks lately. Good enough or should I be using something else?

    • For normal usage, no noticeable difference.

But for high really high usage and/or piece of mind you want a high Total Bytes Written (TBW). (Which is an indication of how much data you can write to an SSD before it dies)

WD Green has a 80 TB TBW, which is more than enough but the Samsung 860 Evo has a 150 TB TBW (250gb model)

      • Excellent response, thanks!
