Panasonic Lumix FZ300 Digital Camera (4K Video) $549 @ JB Hi-Fi

80

A very good price (cheapest I have seen) for a very competent bridge camera (that handles like a DSLR). Even though it's a 3 yr old model, I still think it's very competent due to its full range F2.8 constant aperture. I have this camera and has served me well. It's weather sealed so it's good to bring it out for your upcoming summer vacation! I have owned so many cameras and DSLRs, this is the one I always bring along for great shots, due to the F2.8 lens.

It's not in the big league with full frame mirrorless cam, but you don't need to invest in great optics (which is always the most costly factor) for this cam, and at this price, it's pretty much a straight forward decision. Many places like Harvey is selling at $698, Ted at $749.9, Digital Camera Warehourse at $639. I'm thinking of buying a second one though as there doesn't seem to have a successor to this like a FZ400 or something (I could be wrong if someone can point this out).

Many reviews showing the excellent features

  • How does this compare to the Lumix g7?

    • They are in different leagues. Both were released in 3 quarter of 2015, but the G7 is a 16MP Four Thirds CMOS cam with interchangeable lens. So it's very different and of course the bigger sensor will produce much better result. The body alone cost near to $700 currently and you need to buy lens that suits your needs to use. There are better mirrorless models out there in 2018, with new offerings from Nikon and Canon last month.

FZ300 is an all in one bridge cam that is hassle free and operates like DSLR, and with the F2.8 lens, offer better quality than other F5.6 kit lens in DSLR. To quote PC Mag "The FZ300's 12-megapixel sensor is one of the better 1/2.3-inch chips in terms of high ISO performance, but it doesn't match up with the Sony-made 1-inch BSI CMOS sensor when shooting at a high sensitivity."

So for most daily / casual usage, this cam serves me well. If i'm shooting important events like wedding for a friend, night time shooting or for big portrait photo print like A3 and above size, I will use my APS-C or full frame cams.

    • Unless you will use the long end of the zoom on the fz then a g7 with a 14-140mm will always give you noticeable better images, at a higher cost of course. In good light there's not much in it though.

    • +1

You can get the G7 body for around $400-500 retail these days. $700 is the RRP, but easy to find bargains.

As others posted, I'd go other Micro Four Thirds bodies these days over the G7.

Olympus EM10 Mark II (around $500) or Mark III (around $700)
EM5 Mark II if have around $800
      Panasonic GX85 (around $600) or G85 ($700-800)
