Discussion Forum for iPhone XR Purchase (How to Get the XR for the Lowest Price)

Hi,

I'm going to by the iPhone XR for my wife (she needs a new phone desperately, her old one is falling apart) - probably the 256GB version.

JBHIFI just released their pricing. Today I'm expecting most major carriers and retailer will do the same (today is the pre-order date).

She only needs about 15GB a month data… I'm keen to get the best price over a 24month period (for phone and plan). Probably best to buy outright.

  • Option 1: Get Officeworks to price match whoever lists for the cheapest price and pay in discounted Officeworks gift cards, then get on the cheapest BYO sim plan

  • Option 2: Buy from JBHIFI (with discounted gift cards), after taking advantage of this offer

  • Option 3: Buy on a plan (details not released for any major carrier yet)

  • Option 4?: Let me know in the comments

I'm sure others are in the same boat as me, so I wanted to open the discussion so we could all share our finds/ideas.

Curious why people need 256gb phones? Photo's should be stored on the cloud, video content streamed by netflix & youtube etc & music also streamed by the likes of Spotify. The only exception I am aware of is Apps and how that is a crazy amount of apps. Can someone please enlighten me?

I have 60GB of music on my phone, the rest is taken up with file storage for videos (mostly) and photos.

I'm curious to see - how do you set-up (free) cloud storage for full resolution videos and photos? I prefer paying the extra 250 to have them locally on my phone (easy to share etc), but open to any other ideas that work well!

60gb of music? Because when I go for a 25 day jog, I do NOT want to hear the same track twice!

Storing photos locally is a risk if the device breaks, even if you paid for the premium allocation at $4 a month, that is over 5 years of backup for $250 and in that time you would have already upgraded your phone. It is super easy, automated and if you do need to format you just restore from cloud backup.

        • Sure, but how do do it? What do you use?

          • @The Wololo Wombat: I just use the paid apple cloud storage. Purchased a $100 apple store credit when they were $80. All my devices including the wife is on the same apple ID, $4 a month and they all backup automagically. It really isn't hard.

            • @cypher67: Interesting. I upgrade phones every 3.5 years… So that's $4X42 months = $168, cheaper than the storage upgrade, but not by much… hmmm…

          • +3

@The Wololo Wombat: the iCloud photo library lets you do it, and then click on optimise storage after you uploaded everything to the cloud. itll delete everything off your phone and keep it on the cloud.

i use google photos as this neverending demand for larger storage isn't going to end and google photos is unlimited for 16mp photos, which is good enough for current gen iphones.

with google photos and spotify im using about 25gb of data on my phone now :)

I have my photos backed up to iCloud, but I have them stored locally as well. I don't want to have to wait everytime I'm flicking through photos for them to load. Plus with 60GB+ local music, I'd want the extra storage.

The device takes 4K in amazing quality, too. I video lots.

Do you have an unlimited data plan or is all the streaming content included? Also, when you are travelling, you can’t guarantee access to the cloud. I just go big and don’t worry about juggling apps, music, videos etc.

    • +2

With 4K video recording, those special homemade videos take up a lot of space. They're not something you'd want stored on any cloud!

Option 4: Don't buy it - iPhones aren't a thing any more. If you really are looking for a flagship handset with better specs and features giving much better value for your hard earned cash then forget the i in the iphone…(I don't mind negs coz I know it's true and I'm no android fanboi either…)

It's a fair point. Yet, we both have Macbook Pros and iPads provided from work as well as Apple TV in the house. Happy to migrate away and save some $$ in the future, but since we're both in this situation, best to stay in the apple biosphere for now.

Websterp There is always one who will make this comment.

Bahaha always the h8rs on these threads. You may not be a fanboi, but you're still annoying. The A12 chip is superior to all other CPUs. Get real, braj

      • What use is superior hardware if you can't do anything extra on it? Yeah, it'll make the phone feel a bit quicker. But a bit is nowhere near worth $1,500 grand

probably will wait for the AMEX offer for Harvey Norman ($400 return $100) and see if Harvey Norman can do price match with JB HI-FI or other stores in Nov/Dec.
BTW, you could use more than 1 AMEX cards when you pay it, which means, you you pay $1400, you will get $300 back!

  • $1,400?! I thought this was supposed to be the budget one O_o

IMO you'd be better off looking at the regular X if you absolutely want an iPhone. More or less the same…except the 10 has an OLED. Though feel free to point out if I missed anything.

Edit - although personally at this price I'd go for either a Samsung galaxy s9 or the Samsung galaxy Note 9. Both offer better value IMO.

Double edit - especially when you consider the fact both of the above can have micro SD cards, so you don't have to pay silly amounts for extra storage.

    • Unless you want the iOS operating system.

  • Merged from JB Hi-Fi 128GB iPhone XR $1260.03 (3% off) Stack with 5% off Gift Cards for $1197
    Go to Deal

    Hi,

I've been wanting to get an iPhone XR for my wife. Came out today. Negotiated in store (3% off) + used 5% discount giftcards to pay.

I posted about different options here for anyone interested, this may not be the best option for you.

A few points: JBHIFI's $500 off did NOT turn out cheaper over a 24-month plan when compared with catch connect's offerings

I could not find any advertised price cheaper than Officeworks (RRP) so price match method did not work.

Overall, pretty decent discount for the first day it's released I think!

WTF, that is a ridiculous price for sub-1080p screen.

      • +8

Wow. I'm an idiot. Thanks for letting me know how stupid I am. How did I overlook that?! Hopefully, they'll let me return it. What phone should I get? Any phones with 6.1" 4K screen? Obviously, these kinds of mistakes would never happen for someone as smart as yourself (and financially savvy), so it'd be great to get your opinion.

        • -4

          You certainly sound like one.

      • +2

lolz. Someone would surely say this !

But, my friend, if you turn the phone over and see an 'apple which has had a bite taken out of it', then you have to bow and pay the price.

      • Had a play in store and struggled to tell too much difference between sharpness at normal use between the XR and my OP6. For the majority of users, it's not gonna matter. What I did find baffling is the 1.2K ENTRY price for an up to date iphone. So now if you want to go apple, you have to fork out more then the majority of flagship android phones.

    • -2

Wow, I'm surprised they even bargained 3% off. Thats more than a $100 off the RRP

      • +4

        It's $38.97 off…

        • +1

I meant the final price all up …
Guess some adults have to be spoon-fed too ….
          Oh wait ………..

    • +2

You've been around long enough to know that negotiated deals can't be posted, so really this is RRP + discounted gift cards…

No point neg voting, deal post will be removed.

    • +2

      $1197 for a mid-ranged phone.

      lol yea great price.

    • I thought negotiating in store is not a deal? Pretty sure some posts were deleted with that as a reason.

      • It's not, hence why there's 4 reports lol

I spent $1379 on iPhone xr 256gb from harvey Norman Auburn today. The original offer is $1440. Used 6 Amex Pay it, so get extra 20% off. I ordered xr 128g last week, but red color out of stock,so they offer a deal for 256gb.

  • A few years back, top notch phone would have been $400. But Apple proved ( with the iPhone X ) that there are plenty of people with money to throw away. I do understand that if one earns 500K a year, or 30K a month, that person can spend 5% of his monthly income on a phone. Same goes if that person buys an 90K car, 3x his Monthly Salary. That's what I spent on my Car ( Kia Sportage ). If I were to send 5% of my monthly income I would buy a phone in the $300 range. Oh… that's what I did with my Axon7 when it was 1 year old.

Issue is that 95% cannot keep up with the Jonses on the Car level, but on the phone level they can.

Apple is a cheapish status symbol, even if overpriced. One can put his Iphone XS Max on the table while dining with the GF(s) and show off. Combined with the expensive suit or dress and shoes. That this person lives in a shabby apartment and has the CC maxed out, and struggling with payments, nobody can see.

You cannot stop people from being stupid, it's legal, and it's their choice.

    • The point is people use their phones many times a day, so they go with what they like - even if it may cost a bit more. Smart phones are used for many things; probably the least of which is actually making a call. Nowdays it is more about the apps and the interface, rather than the hardware.

I don't have an iPhone because it is a status symbol - my iPhone is an Iphone 6 plus so that boat sailed a long time ago. I like the iPhones because they just do what I want them to and I don't have to fuss around to get them to do it.

The latest iPhones are not "come to Jesus" for me, just yet - neither are any of the other phones on the market. My next purchase will, probably, be an Ipad Pro; because my iPad Mini4 is the device I use the most and it is getting a tad testy with its battery life.

What is stupid is paying a shite load of money for a car to show off to your friends, when there are perfectly good cars at a much lower price point, or having a massive wedding, or buying expensive wine, etc.

      • Did you pay $1200 for your iPhone6 at the time ?

Previous iteration of Apple was less the status symbol, but more of "I belong to the iPhone user's too", while the Android market was so fragmented, that there isn't the feeling of belonging to a community like apple was.

But this increase of 20% for the latest of apple is different. To the point where Apple does not want most of the people to buy an iPhone, only the elite one's, making it therefore an elite phone. The Iphone X this is.

It is the same "shite load of money" if you look at it in percentage. Oppos, Huawei, ZTE, HTC, Xiamoi, plenty of phones to choose at 1/2 to 1/4 of the price.

        • It is not just about the phone it is also about the ecosystem, and I like Apple's ecosystem. Apart from the regular IOS updates, it is the apps store, the ease of use and things like iMessage. If you have an issue, you take the phone in and, generally, they are quite generous in support.

I don't disagree that the current Apple phones are a bit OTT, but if I used one, a lot, I would be tempted. I use my phone for iMessage, surfing the web, health apps, tram tracker etc. The iPhone 6 plus still works really well and Apple are still updating its IOS for me. I will probably take advantage of the $39 battery replacement before the end of the year.

          • @try2bhelpful: I've only owned an iPhone SE but found it limiting in terms reading articles and online stuff. I like the position that Apple have taken vis a vis Google and by proxy android. God know what data android apps makers are sell g to 3rd parties.

            • @Icecold5000: I went to the iPhone 6 Plus because I like the bigger screen. Can’t go smaller now.

    • I get it because I used it 3hrs a day and it saves me a lot of time having an apple because it works well with my Mac and Apple TV… nothing to do with status at all lol. I buy it for the software.

      • It happens to be true - even if you dont want believe it. My PC is a Hewlett Packard, again because it does what I want it to do. It would appear your anti Apple prejudice is showing.
