Panasonic Lumix G6 Mirrorless Camera with no lens for $209 at Camerapro. Seems like a good price but I'm not camera expert.

Older model but decent specs for the price and it'll be able to take good pics. If you don't need to shoot 4k video or have in body image stabilization then it's a good option for the price. But it doesn't come with a lens so you'll need to get one separately.

    • +4

The 14-140mm 3.5-5.6 would be a good all in one lens to complement this at a low price point.

Bear in mind that as the camera body does not have image stabilization if you use olympus lenses you will have zero image stabilisation.

  • -8

It's a 5 year old MFT camera. It's cheap, but for a reason. The clarity seems to turn to a hot mess once you get above ISO1600, so good luck taking photos of anything moving if it's not in daylight.

E: If you're looking for an entry dedicated camera, you'd be better off getting a Nikon D3X00.

    • +6

Sorry to say it but this is nonsense. If your are not a dedicated pixel peeper, you can easily use ISO3200 for A4 printouts. The (prime) lenses are top notch, there is a high amount of lenses available for every use and budget. This is one of the most popular MFT cameras around and this deal is simply a steal.

The camera you compared it with is a completely different system, heavier more bulky and clearly more expensive. A G6 with a 1.8 or 2.8 lens and the pictures are stunning day and night (edit: not saying that the pictures from all the other lenses are not, actually with the right knowledge all the available lenses will produce great photos, however for hand-held night photography probably a prime is usually a good choice)

Add a travel zoom lens (or kit lens), one or two prime lenses and you are definitely happy for years (if not more).

Examples can be seen here: https://pixelpeeper.com/cameras/?camera=1827&p=1

And by the way: "Age" does not means anything in the world of cameras.

      • -6

"Age" does not means anything in the world of cameras.

What a useless statement. I guess it doesn't mean anything for computers, or cars, or phones either?

        • +4

Sorry don´t have unlimited time to start discussing with you, but I guess we both know the differences between a camera and a computer. And age does mean nothing if you are talking about great, stunning pictures. Have you seen the ones from Meagan V. Blazie taken with her super-zoom (!) camera from 2011, letting her win three editors choice awards from 500px? I guess not.

          https://www.demilked.com/cheap-old-canon-camera-amazing-phot…

Is every new line of cameras, released every 6 months or every year really taking so much "better" pictures? I guess the expertise, experience and talent has a way bigger influence. And believe it or not, a lot of people are happy with their point and shoot which they bought years ago.

          • -2

@PictureMeBroken: Yes, some people can take great photos with old cameras, but that doesn't mean that age means nothing. Taking technically good photographs gets easier with each generation.

You will notice that all of those photos are landscapes and heavily edited. The main increases in camera technology have been in low light, high ISO and video and FPS if those are important to you.

      • +3

I really like the age comment. So many people get wrapped up in tech & features. While photographers with skill & experience are still using decades old cheap equipment.

        • +1

True with film, not so much with digital sensors.

          • +3

@BamBam cheapsk8: I would take skill & experience over the latest & greatest. I’d ague that a lot of 5-10+ yrs old Digital cameras are still valid. Depending on requirements.

            • +1

@stickymoo: When new models with new features come out, a lot of people feel like they have to have those features and sometimes they forget that they were able to take really good pics with their older cameras. If you have the money and enjoy using the latest gear then go for it. But that doesn't mean older cameras can no longer take good pics.

This is probably an extreme example but I love this guy's creativity as well as the pics.

            • -2

@stickymoo: But no one in their right mind would choose older technology over newer. There's a reason why professional photographers spend (tens of) thousands of dollars on their equipment - because it works better than the older equipment.

Yes, the older equipment still works, just like a well maintained Datsun 120Y will still get you from A to B, and with enough patience, you can render animations on a P4.

              • +1

                @macrocephalic: Sometimes.
                But not always.
I know of a lot of working photographers/ videographers consciously choosing older tech for a variety of reasons with remarkable results.
Money spent does not equal output of quality content.

  • -8

    lenses expensive for that too

    • +8

Plenty of lenses available online, new and used for a very cheap price.

      • -6

define "very cheap price". if you're only paying $209 for a body you arn't going to be willing to spend $400 + for an entry level lens. better off going for a more expensive body with more lens options imo, but each to their own.

        • +8

Why not? The money you save can be spend on prime lenses. The body is not the most important part of a good camera setup. Good quality lenses are. And there are plenty of lens options available for MFT (Panasonic, Olympus,Sigma,…). Literally dozens of lenses.

And with 400AUD you can get way more than "just" an entry level lens for this system, trust me.

        • +5

$50-$150 for an entry level lens. $200-$500 for prosumer primes. Which is still cheap, relatively. Glass is the investment. To find cheap, disposable bodies to chuck your glass on. Even better.

          • @stickymoo: Can someone please suggest an entry level lens around $50 to $100? Thank you :)

            • +1

@MOPAP: I think I sold my Olympus 12-50mm f3.5-6.3 for between $50-$80 on eBay a while ago. Good all round lens. Keep an eye out for second hand Panasonic kit lenses on eBay. Or there’s some good sigma art series between $100-$150.

      • +4

If okay to buy used, Panasonic 12-32mm for approx $100-150, Panasonic 20mm f1.7 for approx $200, Olympus 45mm f1.8 for approx $200-250, Samyang/Rokinon lenses if you're okay with manual focus can be had pretty cheap, sometimes someone will post a deal on brand new Sigma lenses. It's the best value system if you keep an eye out for good deals and familiarise yourself with the huge selection of lenses.

        • +1

          Fully agree mate.

        • +1

Generally agree! I'd warn people off the 20mm f1.7 as the focus motor is REALLY slow. It could literally take over 1 second to focus. Longer if the AF got a bit confused.

I would really recommend the 25mm f1.7 panny. Much more enjoyable experience!

          • +5

@incipient: Only in a darker room, otherwise quite fast AF.

            • +2

@cheapo999: It's not as fast as newer lenses but I don't have issues with it (I don't shoot sports but do shot a lot indoors). It was my first MFT lens back in 2010 and it's still my most used lens. Because of the focal length, size, the image quality, and the way it renders an image, it's by far my fave lens and I currently have 7 MFT lenses (and previously owned another dozen or so MFT lenses). I can survive on that lens alone although I'm the kind who prefers primes over zooms.

            • @cheapo999: If I were buying either of these, I'd suggest reading up. I used the 20mm and it drove me to tears!

I found a lot of the advantages of a "fast 50" lens (yeah ok this isn't quite 50mm!) was lost to the slow focus, and I would miss shots.

Like anything, just my experience! Ymmv =)

Note: the 20mm is an epic lens in terms of quality. I just find the focus too annoying.

Great review of the 20mm: http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2013/08/23/the-panasonic-20-1-…

          • +3

@incipient: I love the 20mm 1.7. First virsion & have no dramas with focus. Great for video too.

  • +1

Tempting! Should I get this one to replace my old Canon 400D?

    • +5

I love mft. I would call myself a very very amateur enthusiast; I may take shots on the occasional weekend, but mostly holidays.

Mft is fantastic for a BUNCH of reasons.
-sensor is big enough to capture a decent image, even at night, but small enough that a zoom lens can cover a good distance.
      - well priced for me! $400/500 for a good body and $400 for good glass. If I'm spending $5k on a holiday, a few hundred on camera stuff is reasonable.
      - wide choice of lenses at all budgets. $150 all the way to $1500.
      - small body sizes! I really loved my gx1. Was a pleasure beyond belief. I'd really like to get my hands on the gx850! The power of mft in the size of a compact!

Anyway on point. This camera is quite different to the Canon. Is it up upgrade? Probably a bit, but will depend on your lens (and honestly the photographer too!). But you'll need new glass. If you already have some good ef-s lenses, the Canon mirrorless may make a nice alternative if you want more compact.

    • +2

Might be cheaper in the long run looking at canon if you already have glass. If you aren’t heavily invested into a system.
The question would be what are you looking to do with it. There is a lot of variables to take into account. Point & shoot now are competitive, convenient & hard to ignore.

      • +1

Agree, super-zoom cameras are also worth considering for most users. But as you said, there are a lot of things to consider when buying a new system.

  • +3

I’d speculate new or used this would be the best value body for right now. It’s relatively hard to find modern features with a good sensor for around $200. With access to a good range of affordable glass. What else is there?

    • +3

      Really good value for $200.

      • +3

I got one. For me it is a no brainer.

        • +1

Would've picked one up if I didn't already have two bodies. I'm actually considering buying it for my dad in law to upgrade his point and shoot.

  • +1

I'm a bit hesitant to get this as I have a G3 with 12-32mm. From what I read, the image quality between the G3/5/6 are not really that much different beyond better dynamic range, and my usage case doesn't justify the upgrade.

I love my G3 as I got it extremely cheap similar to this deal, and for anyone who doesn't have a MFT camera now this would be a great way to get into the system.

    Just not for me unfortunately.

The other advantage I see is that the G6 has focus peaking. For all you vintage lens owners, this would be really helpful.

    • +1

I use focus peaking all the time with my manual lens. So it is good to know that the G6 has that. G6 also has manual controls & audio input which is great for $200.

    • You will get better dynamic range with the G6 which inherited the GH2 sensor minus the capability to utilise the multi-aspect sensor.

      • what can the GH2 utilise with the sensor that the G6 cannot?
All I can find is the G6 has 1080/60p & focus peaking which the GH2 doesn’t.

  • Can someone please suggest a very basic entry level lens? I want to get one for my daughter. Thank you. :)

  • Error 404 on that link now
We're sorry, the page you're looking for has moved or does not exist.

Damn I have a broken Olympus EM-5 with shutter fail.
I have a Panny zoom and a few Olympus lenses and this would have been a cheap way to keep going with the same kit

    • The one I put in my cart is still there but it says out of stock. Good job to anyone who got one.

  • All on backorder, looks like they never had the stock

    • I received an order confirmation. I did have an employee from support let me know that they have now sold out. Which would indicate they possibly had stock. How do you know they are all on backorder?

      • I think my email must have been different, mine just stated that the order has been processed but will be on backorder until they find the date from their supplier.

        That sucks

        • What time did you place the order? I checked my email again & cannot see it mentioning backorder anywhere.

          • @stickymoo: 12:30, and then received the email about processed order + backorder at 6:04pm

            • @Truthbe: You ordered before I did. I guess we will just have to wait & see.

  • I just recieved an email with the order being canceled. Pretty disappointed.
    Did anyone get one?

    • +2

I just got that too, and whats with the 'Oh we can swap it for a different model', but what they mean is 'swap for another model and pay $500 extra'

Lost my business for life after that

      • Yeah, I got the same message. A lack lustre, non competitive offer on a camera 3 times more expensive than the sale price of the G6. Waste of time.

    • My email says they will do a swap for GX85. I will accept that offer. Where are you guys seeing pay $500 extra? If that is the case, super poor reflection on their business. But as far as I can see it is a swap?

  • +1

I also got the swap email, my interpretation was swap but you pay the difference, so I said refund. I'll kick myself if it really was a straight swap no more to pay :-(

  • Not sure if you guys got different emails, mine was pretty clear that they are happy to swap for Gx85, no mention about paying extra. Pretty fair offer.

  • +1

OK I take it back, they sent another email demanding more money. Pitiful service and completely misleading. Big thumbs dowb to Camerapro, they should be banned from all future Ozbargain posts. Will never buy from them again and certainly wont be recommending them to anyone!

  • +1

These guys are clowns. Already requested a refund and now they are offering another camera (at extra cost of course). This whole deal seems like a scam to suck in people and get them to spend more $$. Interested if anyone got a G6 confirmed??

  • -5

Thank you everyone for your patience and understanding.
The Panasonic G6 was a clearance model with limited stock.
Last Friday, we received a huge number of orders for this product within just a few minutes of the sale going live onto the Ozbargain site. We had the product removed from our site within a few minutes of discovering the Sell Out, but unfortunately a number of orders had already come through.
We did offer an alternative product to those who missed out. We apologise for the misunderstanding regarding the change from the G6 to this product not being a straight swap (as the alternative product was a newer model).
We appreciate everyone’s feedback and have put in place a process to stop this from happening again – Items will now show they are out of stock, as soon as the last one is sold out. We have also updated our communication message to ensure there is no confusion regarding the pricing on alternate products.
If you have not opted to proceed with the alternative product your original payment will be refunded in full.

  • +3

I ordered mine hours before this deal is posted onto Ozbargain and still received cancellation email.

Just admit it and deal with what you have intended.

    You guys are unbelievable.

  • +1

I am actually appalled by the fact that they offered a swap and then come back the next day requesting further payment. Got my hopes up for nothing, I thought it was a goodwill gesture on their behalf. The offer itself was a pathetic 5% discount. I would have been more than happy to wait for further stock of the G6 to arrive or accept an alternative/comparable camera, but I am very dubious as to whether anyone received a G6 at all now.
