  • Good price on the Poco?

  • Intel Mini PC Windows: seems to be a good price.
Would be interested to know the performance from users.
    Is it capable of 4k?

    • HDMI interface: HDMI1.4 , So buttery smooth 30hz,
I would think that 2gig of memory would be killing performance, so only good for mums or kids doing reading eggs.

        So buttery smooth 30hz

        Most streams are 30fps.

I would think that 2gig of memory would be killing performance

Wrong. Ram transfers in the gigabytes/tens of per second. 4k requires a fraction of that. Persistent storage speed might be an issue but even that's unlikely. You're going to see bottlenecks if the device doesn't support hardware decoding of videos (ie my HEVC compatible NUC can do 4k HEVC, but x264 1080p) or shitty wireless chipsets.

Edit: Not that I would go for this device. Go buy a midrange NUC.

    • I run mine at 4k 30Hz, I actually forgot it was only 2GB of RAM. I use Kodi and it works well. The inbuilt Wi-Fi is great I found. Haven't actually run any genuine 4k content apart from YouTube clips which seem to do fine

I am referring to the actual Intel branded Compute Stick here. This post looks like a generic clone based on a similar chipset. I can't comment on this unit.

    • I did a heap of research on these and the general consensus was not that positive, I found one on Gumtree for $70 and the guy selling it told me it was sluggish, he had intended to use it for digital signage but couldn't for some reason.

Apparently the chromebit offers better performance iF you don't mind being locked to Google's eco system and invasiveness.
I've previously seen them locally for 150ish.

Edit: cyssero and some others are reporting good experiences with these little PC's. Regretting not scooping the Gumtree one up now, don't think the new ones like Linux anyway.

      Should be, with h264.

But be wary of running win-10 with only 2GB. As above, plenty for Kodi though.

I have a 4GB box with same cpu and eMMC, and it is barely OK under windows.
      HD Video is fine though.

Anyone had any experience with those pocket PCs? Seem like the coolest thing!

    • I have a couple for media streaming, they work quite well. Paid around $170 AUD for mine a year and half ago so I think this is a good price.

Xiaomi Mi Max 3 4G Smartphone 6GB RAM 128GB ROM (Chinese & English Version)
    USD$300/ AUD$422, Shipped

this is very good price, RRP in china is $405-ish.

Very very good price. Just bought a blue 128Gb for my dad. I already have a black 128Gb one I bought from Aliexpress when they were having the 11% cashback. Also bought one for the wife in 64Gb. It's a good phone.

Just waiting for the custom roms…2 week wait just to unlock the bootloader >.<

      • +1

I'm waiting for global ROMs. Apparently Xiaomi enabled anti rollback, so if you try flashing a global ROM on a phone that has Chinese ROM you will permantnely brick the phone:(

        • My understanding is that you now have to wait 30 days for the unlocked bootloader. After that you can flash the global rom, it just wont let you flash older ROMs, if you have anti rollback.

          https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/www.xda-developers.com/xiaom…

        • Not necessarily true.
You might brick your phone if you flash an older version of the ROM. Flashing from older version to newer version is okay.

Flashing a custom ROM like LineageOS is not restricted by antirollback.

You can still install Google Playstore on the Chinese ROM. It just takes more time uninstalling the unwanted Chinese apks that came with the Chinese ROM.

I would install a custom ROM if you buy a Chinese phone…I may be wrong, but the Chinese ROMs may be tracking all sorts of data without your knowledge.

          • @usydfriends: I think it was 15 days when I applied to have my bootloader unlocked (360 hours)

          • +1

@usydfriends: Never used a custom ROM except on my LeEco le pro 3. Chinese ROMs tracking your data is just rubbish.

I have the STK1AW32SC Intel Compute Stick, which has similar specs to this PC stick - some info below for those interested in what it can do:

The Intel stick is a nice idea but doesn’t quite pull everything off…

    https://www.cnet.com/reviews/intel-compute-stick-2015-review…

But if you like the form factor, the updated version is much better…

    https://www.engadget.com/2016/01/22/intel-compute-stick-2016…

So, you may want to invest in the newer version.

    Hope this helps.

  • I have a client with an HP netbook style laptop that has 32gb of storage. Every six months he brings it to me to get the windows 10 feature update installed. It runs out of space during the update process (windows.old etc). 32gb with even a few apps is just a little too tight. Plenty of space after a cleanup of temporary files etc but PC's don't stay that way.

  • For anyone that ordered the Mi Max 3 from Gearvita, has it been shipped or currently still processing?

    • Did you end up getting your Mi Max 3?

  • Yea received it. Was about 7 days to be despatched and got here by DHL about 3 days later.

    • Thanks for your feedback. Have a nice day : )
