  • Bitcoin's death has been amazing. After 6 years of hell, we can finally buy top end cards for $500-$700. Hopefully Bitcoin goes to zero this year and high end $450 video cards becomes a real thing again.

    • This one is very much more related to the death of Ethereum! Recall it was circa $2k last Xmas and now <$300

      • Yea, I hope the whole Crypto Currency world dies soon. 8 years of high priced video cards and no innovation.

  • -7

Forget about a-sync or b-sync, RTX 2070 will be everywhere soon. For now, GTX 1080 is much better value.

I do to somewhat agree… not only looking at performance benchmarks, but mainly power consumption… on a system used about 5 hours a day (for graphics intensive applications), pretty much worst case, each year the vega 64 is using about $75 more in power… over its lifetime, the total cost of ownership for the 1080 should be less.

that said, performance is much of a muchness and really depends on what your playing, the massive difference is freesync though, given there are some fantastic monitors which include freesync, and equivalent monitors with gsync are much higher priced…

just wished the power consumption wasn't as bad as it is…

all in all, I'll probably grab another amd card in a couple months time with black friday & Xmas sales, i rekon one will finally break the 500 dollar mark…

then its time for one of these bad boys:
      https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-49-curved-329-super-ultra…

as i cant justify the cost of the Samsung C49HG90.

Yep Freesync is a game changer.

  • The vega 56 is $550 as well which is epic

Can get it for $480 on ebay using the 20% off code

      • Bargain! I think the xfx would be better than the strix also. It may not look as good or be as quiet but from what I have heard it doesn't have the same vrm issues as the strix 56 and 64.

  • Do you think the Rx 580 8GB will go cheaper anytime soon Got my eye on it for some reason.

    • During the podcast sale the asus dual rx 580 8gb was $303.2 ($379 with 20% off).

Edit: that's about $7 off the lowest price we've seen in recent months.

You can buy these on Gummie for <$200

      • +3

They're not new, don't come with a warranty, the quality cannot be confirmed and you don't know what it's been used for/overclocked.

Used could run like new or could be DOA. With no warranty, it's not a fair comparison.

  • The POTPLANT code is not working for me. Are there any special conditions to meet?

  • +4

Make sure you have a well ventilated case and a good power supply. This card also needs 2x 8-pin PCIE connectors and it's total peak power consumption totals something like 295 watts. That's a lot of juice, of which also translates to a lot of heat output.

There is also a flaw with ASUS STrix design that causes the voltage regulators to run very hot (close to 95 degrees celsius) which can be fixed by changing the thermal pads to a thicker one so that it makes better contact with the heatsink.

    • Hey scrim! Do you know if this voids the warranty at all? It is incredibly easy to do with minimal risk and Asus I know had a thermal paste change friendly warranty at one point but on the other hand the card does come with a 3 year warranty. I'm wondering whether it's worth leaving the longevity issues the temps cause up to the warranty.

      • You need to ask ASUS australia that. I'm not up to date on whether unscrewing the heatsinks void the warranty.

  • I was looking at this card but ended up getting a gtx 1080 instead. The strix model has very good cooler design but for some reason Jayztwocents tested it and it underperform vs the reference Vega, not sure if that have been fixed.

    • +1

It's basically the overheating HBM2 memory modules i believe. You can fix it yourself — slap a thermal pad on it to improve cooling, but I looked on eBay and I couldn't find any good quality pads at a reasonable price. Just cheap junk and the occassional Thermal Grizzly that costs $30 shipped from Italy.

I cancelled my order and will hunt for a different brand.

  • should be sub 500

    • Very unlikely that would happen. This fights toe to toe with the GTX 1080, which at it's lowest point, went for $599 last month but was for more basic coolers.

      • but the power consumption is 100-150 watts more, depending on what your doing, the total cost of ownership is way higher with the AMD, (if you don't include the monitor)

        • old cards - price gouged for years cuz they could - now they need to shift em and they're using silly old prices to exaggerate price cuts. way cheaper in us when good deals come up which we can no longer access cuz of bent pollies.

the continuation of higher pricing is a direct result of corrupt liberal policies which labor will do nothing to turn around.

  • Can you power mod this to beat 1080?

    • its faster in some benchmarks, slower in others, you can O/C them both, so not a good comparison, they are both fast… this one just uses more energy to do it.

      • Is the energy consumption that huge a deal? Say on a PC that only games for an hour or two while just basic browsing/youtubing the rest of the day? It would idle at a lower power consumption wouldn't it? Or does it still add up significantly at idle?

        • +2

nah, on idle its only a few watts, but gaming a reasonable amount each day could quickly add up to 50 bux or so (year), heavy gamer's could probably be as high as 100 per year (or more). over the life of the card 2 or so years, total cost of ownership for the card would probably be quite a bit higher on the amd card.

if we say two hours per day at 150 watts difference, elec 33 cents per kwh - ends up being about 36 per year…

not too much for a casual gamer to worry about…

i cant imagine the heat being too good on the components though…

    • According to Hardwareunboxed 27 games benchmark, GTX 1080 is 5% faster than Vega 64, 8% faster than the Vega 64 when both boosted.

These guys have some light speed shipping :) Ordered a GIGABYTE Vega64 on the morning of Thursday, gone into the PO box by Friday Morning. Then again I guess it's only traveled from Sydney to Western Sydney suburb.
