Does anyone recommend the 64gb version over this? Or I would be fine at 32gb?

I'm thinking of getting these for use over hdbaset later on.
Is there anything comparable with Android or this is fine?

    • The Nvidia shield would be comparable.

      • +1

I've had an apple TV 4 for a while and just bought an Nvidia Shield.

I'd take the Shiled any day.

        • My only problem with Android TV boxes is the AirPlay functionality.

          • @CrazyBuyer007: FWIW the YouTube app on iPhones can 'cast' to Android TVs, which is hopefully what you mainly want to play

    • +5

      32gb is more than enough.

Almost nothing but the games uses much space on this. Unless you plan on loading big heavy games (like full 3d car racing, not mobile phone style) then 32GB is plenty.

There are higher specced Android devices for cheaper. However, pretty much none of them are as slick as the Apple TV user experience wise.

Thanks, i pulled the trigger and got one.
        See how that goes :)

    • I had the 32 GB version. Sometimes my infuse library would get deleted if it got too large which was super annoying

      • +1

Yeah, I would certainly pay the extra for 64GB.

TvOS caches app content. If you run low on space it will start deleting apps content and force you to re-download on demand.

    • It depends. I have the 64GB versions which I got at a price not much different to this in an eBay sale. I think it is fantastic, slick interface and great consumption device.
If you use the box to play large games that require a heap of storage, maybe. Otherwise the the 32GB version is probably fine for streaming and accessing a lot of apps of that type.

I got the 64GB as I thought big file at 4K with Dolby vision atoms etc would buffer up and use all the space. But i think I worried too much and 32GB would be enough.

Great price, considering, even the refurb from apple is $209.

I've been using this with Infuse Pro app to stream my 4k ripped movies from a NAS, works great!

    • Have you been able to get truehd audio (or Atmos audio) to passthrough?

      • Yeah I would like to know the same thing. Has anyone tested atmos passthrough on the Appletv 4k? Main reason why I want to upgrade. Or I just get a intel NUC so I can play any file and more options with audio passthrough.

    • +1

Apparently Infuse charge something crazy like $60 to enable 4K playback?

      • It's $22.99 if you want Infuse 5 Pro forever (with minor/patch upgrades only).
It's $69.99 if you want Infuse forever (including major version upgrades).

Or you can go the monthly/yearly sub route: $14.49 per year or $1.49 a month.

        A bit like Plex Pass.

      • $60 is the lifetime app version. The $8 a year version works great in 4k

      • MrMC is great if you don’t mind ugly UI.

  • You can also purchase 'refurbished' 32 GB Apple TV 4K directly from Apple for $209 including free shipping.

  • +1

Remember to use Cashrewards for 5% cashback! Comes to $201.07

    • Cashrewards doesn't work for Apple products at the Good Guys unfortunately.

  • +1

    Great price.

I bought one for $229 last week. Where do I hand in my Ozbargain badge?

Happy with the item though for sure.

  • Thanks, just grabbed one.

  • Easy to install kodi on this ?

    • +3

No - the closest thing would be MrMC, which is a cut-down version of Kodi.

A few other gotchas worth considering:

      • Munted remote
      • No USB
      • No audio passthrough (can cause channel mapping issues and multi-channel PCM issues)
      • Frame rate matching breaks Stan, Optus Sport, and Amazon
      • No YouTube 4k
      • Foxtel Now airplay broken (anything that causes the microphone/speaker to activate it stops Foxtel playing)
      • You have to pay extra for a half decent app to playback 4K content
      • Random "wake from sleep" issues
      • +1

        Munted remote

Any IR remote you got around the house can control the AppleTV.

        • Also any iOS device can control the aTV via app or from Control Centre…

  • Thanks! Grabbed one :)

  • Any chance of binglee price matching?

  • Will this work with Plex by any chance?

    • +1

Yes. non 4K also works with Plex.

      • Thanks!

      • Will Plex output 4K on a 4K Apple TV….guessing so?

  • Purchased! 👍
