  • Does anyone know how well the PVR function works?

    Can you just plug in a 1TB external HDD and have it record like a dedicated HDD recorder?

    • My bestie and her cousin got one of these each, just before chrissy and they aren't too bad! I set up their PVR's, with 1TB external HDD's and they work fine. I think it's about 25 hrs recording time. Make sure you read the instruction book properly, because I almost didn't find them! When you first set up your HDD it tells you approx. how much recording time is available. Enjoy!

      • Would you also happen to know if you can wall mount it?

        • +1

          Not sure, they haven't got theirs mounted, but I'll be going there tomorrow morning, so I'll check!

        • thanks peeweekathi :)

  • Great price for a Full HD TV that size. Shame I've never heard of the brand before :/

    • +2

      Bauhn is their inhouse brand, and it seems to be relatively positivly recevied here.

    • +3

      EDIT : SEE ABOVE
      60 day no-questions-asked return too :) might be time to test the Z506.

      • nearly $30 cheaper than logitech shop too

        • logitechshop on ebay http://bit.ly/eTAOEp

        • ah, i was just looking at logitechshop.com.au where they are $106

          still, aldi's return policy makes it worth while purchasing from aldi if you are close to a store.

    • They almost always use Samsung panels.

    • Bauhn is quite a good brand. Sounds like it has some Aldi/German engineering behind it judging by the name.

      • +5

        Likely that the only German engineering in the name is the spelling of Bauhn and perhaps the glue used to attach the Bauhn logo to the 100% made in china products (though in all likelihood the glue is also made in china).
        Judging something by it's name will lead to dissapointent. Steinlager sounds German… But it's a New Zealand beer…

        • -1

          You're right. I'm just trying to be funny. I tend to have a admiration for German products or engineering/designs, they are infallible. But seriously, my cousin bought a 42" Bauhn TV a few years back and it has stood up to daily abuse by the kid's consoles and still going strong. Picture quality was good , range of features, build quality etc.
          At this price, I would definitely give it a go, especially with Aldi's 60day return policy.

    • +1

      bought my parents a 42" Bauhn LCD from Aldi a year or more ago for $999 or so … that was a bargain at the time (especially for a 100hz lcd).

      The TV was very good though for the price. No complaints.

  • Does it have usb input? Are the 8W speakers good enough? I thought 10W should be minimum.

    • Record, pause and play back live TV via PVR function and USB memory device

      • that's ouput to the USB. Mokibria probably wants to know if it can play divx and other formats from a USB device.

  • +1

    Gotta say Bauhn's pretty reliable… I got my one back when the 42" 100Hz first dropped to $999 (couple of years ago?) and it's still going strong.

    • Is this a 100Hz one?

      • Doubt it, otherwise it would be listed as one of the key features to boost the value perception.

    • shrug Do they even make panels less than 100Hz nowadays?

      • Yes, of course.

    • We got one of that batch. Didn't support 24Hz input, plus had a hopless 100Hz engine which generated lots of artifacts. I don't know if this model is different.

      Our TV developed a fault with the image, and we happy to get $750 cash back on a warranty claim.

    • I am in the same boat. Me 100Hz version still going on strong, ~1.5years now. Best value at the time. I did have to line up earlier just so I could get one at the time tho, as they sell like hotcakes.

    Gosh I was going down to dse tomorrow to buy the sanyo $549 40" LCD. I think I might have to wait a week longer for my tv now and get this one. 2yr warranty on this tv is appealing. Plus better energy rating as well.

    • I'd stick with the Sanyo.

      • +2

        +1 all the aldi electronics i have bought has been A1 junk and been returned

        • +1

          I must say that I CANNOT concur with this assessment. 99% of my Aldi electronics have performed as advertised and have satisfied this consumer.

          In fact, I still have the Vivid 32" LCD TV from a little over a year ago. Am more than happy with that $500 purchase.

      • +1 for the Sanyo as well.

    • The DSE Sanyo also comes with a free surge protector and HDMI cable, so it's a good deal, but this Aldi TV is 2" bigger and $50 cheaper, so tough call.

      • +7

        if you don't think 2" makes a difference ask your girlfriend

    • I would grab Sanyo over this.

  • +2

    In case anyone plans on rushing to Aldi tomorrow morning, this deal is for 24 march (thursday next week).

    • Agree Need to put AVAILABLE from 24th march in the deal.

    • Do not run in you may get tired.

  • +1

    That energy rating is just icing on the cake. I just hope there'll be stock left later in the day on Thursday :/

    • you're right, they will sell out FAST!

      • Yes, which is kinda disappointed as they usually don't have a lot of stocks.

        • +1

          If you're serious about buying it you may need to take the day off work and queue up at 9am with all the other sheep outside the store.

        • yup! thats what i had to do with the last $999 42" Bauhn LCD

  • Pretty decent price!
    So is the 5ms a downfall for this tv?
    and how does it compare to the cheapies at jb/dick smith!

  • How does it compare with Vivo or something?

  • +1

    No FULL specs anywhere?

    Does this TV have RCA inputs for PS2/Xbox/old DVD players?

    DOes it have DVI input?

    Does it have DB 25 (PC) input???

    Also what is the warranty like with ALDI do they pick it up and deliver at ALDI's cost for any repairs?

    Any links to full specs.

    cheers - & lots of Beers

    • Same Question + Does the USB only for PVR or does play Divx etc as well? Good price though

    • I want to try and check it out after work. I wonder if it has a slot for scart?

      • +1

        Just checking, but the tv is on sale next thursday, not today.

        • Lucky you said that, I didn't realise. Saved me a trip from work! :) Thanks!

    • Does this TV have RCA inputs for PS2/Xbox/old DVD players?

      Almost definitely.

      Does it have DVI input?

      I doubt it, it has 3 x HDMI.

      Does it have DB 25 (PC) input?

      You mean D-Sub 15? Probably.

  • pretty good deal. if I needed a 42" TV and had $499 I would grab it.

  • +1

    Isn't it interesting? Comments tend to suggest Sanyo for $549 over this but Sanyo had less positive votes. Must be the psychological effect of sub-$500 price. :)

    • Yeah I know. I am still trying to decide which one to buy.

      • I would go for Sanyo as well. it's been long discussed on Whirlpool. it looks like a good value tv.

        • i would go brauhn, they have been very nice tvs in the past

      If you're going to say it's crap, at least give a reason why…

    • +1

      +1 for reason. as per pauline.. please explain

    • +2

      find it interesting you can say a TV that you probably cant even buy in Australia yet is crap.

      as i said above i bought my parents a bauhn and it worked out fine.

    • what brand do you rep…sony, sanyo, samsung, panasonic…which one>???

    • what brand do you rep…sony, sanyo, samsung, panasonic…which one>???

    • +3

      probably wants to purchase one, scaring people away from buying to give them a better chance haha

  • someone find out the Hz and if it does indeed do USB input

    • For usb, see the 4. bullet point above. No mention in the ad=50Hz

  • +2

    I rang Aldi (Queensland office) and the girl who answered had the following specs info on a hardcopy that she read out to me:
    * contrast 1500:1
    * brightness 500 cd/m2
    * viewing angle 178 degrees H and V

    Connections:
    * 3x HDMI
    * 2x YPbPr/YCbCr
    * 1x AV video/audio
    * 1x composite
    * 1x VGA (PC)
    * 1x USB

    Not sure what the difference is between the AV and the composite, but otherwise this seems to be the same as the Sanyo 40" unit that others have been mentioning except the Sanyo has 2x composite.

    She also said that I could call (their helpline?) 1300 88 66 49 to ask about how warranty would be handled. I haven't made this call and probably don't intend to at this stage cos I'm leaning towards the Sanyo.

    • Thanks for the info. I'm leaning toward this TV because of the 2 year warranty and the 30 day return policy if you're not happy with it.

      • +1

        Aldi have a 60 day return policy!

  • How does 5ms response time look? I had an Acer LCD with an 8ms response time and you could see a lag.

    • 5ms response time is quite fast
      it is about the same speed as other big companies(sony, panasonic, etc)

      • 5ms is typical of most LCD screens, including computer monitors.

  • +1

    First impressions very good. Menu's all seem to be responsive. No dead pixels, 360 looks fine.

    Only spent 30 minutes with it so far but seems like a great bargain.

  • I can confirm its 50hz

  • Lined up and got the tv this morning. There is nothing too impressive about it (factored in the cheap price already). And the TV was frozen the first time when I turned it on, fine after an on/off restart. Confirmed 50Hz. Good picture detail, color is leaning on the warm side with all the preset option. Haven't checked out the PVR function. In short, a decent TV for its price and the story ends there….

  • Went to South Melbourne Aldi and they ran out as usual. If anyone knows about availability in any Melbourne store near city please let me know.

  • +1

    I got there at store opening to be greeted by about a crowd of 50 people all waiting for this small Aldi store to open. Ran in with a friend to the line at the back dock for the TV's and got one of the last ones.

    Extremely impressed with the TV so far. Foxtel SD looks amazing even though its 576i and image quality in general looks great for the price.

    I will agree that the colours look a little warm but with proper calibration you can easily fix that.
