[AMA] I Work at Macca’s Front Counter, Ask Me Anything!

So, similar to LikeClockwork’s Post, but I work at the front, so I handle counter, fries, order packaging, drinks and desserts! Feel free to ask me anything!

P.S also a casual employee, and I work at what I presume is one of the busiest Maccas without a drive thru in Victoria.

    strangest custom burger?

    • +1

Not that I’ve had many, but heres to name a few:
Cheeseburger / Hamburger with no meat patty
Big Mac with an extra chicken patty added on top of two meat patties
A demand to put through the Mighty McMuffin during lunch/dinner menu, had to add a whole heap of stuff to the Bacon & Egg.

Since CYO (Create Your Own) is gone, I have not received many strange orders since that era.

      • That isn't hard. Sausage and Egg Muffin + 2 bacons + tomato sauce

        • Sorry, got confused with Big Brekkie.

It was the Big Brekkie, so had to run around calling the manager for assistance.

      • +5

nooooo, thats not how you do it, you replace the middle bit of bread with the chicken patty.

    • +7

Do you think McDonalds will become a world famous burger chain?

      • +12

Yeah, I never heard of it either but they say they have over 2,000 locations in this state alone.

      • +3

To be honest, no. McDonald’s is declining.

        • +2

          Red Rooster ftw.

  • +1

Do you ever line up drink cartons and bowl them over with syrup boxes?

    • Nah. They’re separated with each other.

  • Have you ever been hit on by customers, do you encorage the ones you like and have you ever met up with one outside of work? Lol

Was the least macas question i could think of

    • +18

You shoulda just opened with "ASL?"

      • Asl?

        • +1

I remember the good mIRC days and msn messenger!

            • +2

@amygirl: I met a friend of a friend on mIRC and she's now been my wife for 18 years. Back then it would have been a bit weird, but now I think it's kind of normal and more common.

          • @the-mal: 15/m/ny

    • Nope. Inappropriate for a fast food restaurant 😂

Don’t need to and never will

Back area perspective: As I work back area, I don't exactly interact with customers that often. However a few days ago when I went to clean the car park (with a solid hi-vis vest on) a group of the opposing gender came over, not really the best time when you're trying to clean bins, and asked for my snapchat. The manager came out as I was talking to them, luckily he's a lad and let me off the hook for not cleaning lol.

Another time when I was training, I had to go to front area and get water for a steam clean of the grill. A girl ordering asked if I went to the school I go to mid-order. I'd seen her at parties a few times, but after that we started talking and are pretty good mates now. Most of the people hitting each other up are actual crew members.

      • be careful they are only after your money </tongue in cheek>

        • +9

How much maccas do you eat on a weekly basis?

What staff discount do you get?

    • Surprisingly barely anything. Once in a while I grab a Filet O’ Fish with extra fillet.

The staff discounts is dependent on manager, 50% on the day of your shift at your restaurant and 20% all other times applicable to all restaurants. The MeTime 20% discount can be accessed via the online ordering app! :)

I sometimes get the entire meal for free if my manager memes themselves too hard.

      • That's a fun fact! (20% metime can be utilised with the app). How is it applied?

I love using the app but my biggest issue is being unable to make customisations I can do at the counter and unable to use Student Edge.

        • +1

It appears as a reward. It can only be applied once a day.
The main difference is that you can order anything on the app ($1 Hamburger, Frozen Coke) at the 20% discount. If you use your MeTime card in-store, all promotions & loose change menu items are restricted from being discounted.

You can always order on the app and explain to the staff preparing your order that you have a Student Edge card and they can prepare a drink for you.

          • @nxllson: Lucky, our restaurant manager only allows us to order off the app to get MeTime discount, so once per day and half price is only given within about half an hour either side of your shift.

Some shift managers don’t care and don’t like the manager so will give you 20% off any time and even occasionally 50% off when you’re not working.

I also have a couple managers that let me come in and make a free coffee, get extra sauce on Sundaes etc

Had one manager who would sometimes throw my meals through as a managers meal, she was cool

            • @ThatKiwiFella: You must have a strict restaurant manager! The registers have the MeTime option for a reason. Most of my managers would do crew meals for me on days off.

              • @nxllson: Anything to save $1. Crew members couldn’t claim any instant food prizes in the latest Monopoly, she even tried saying crew weren’t allowed soft drinks when the restaurant owners would tell us it was fine.

It’s pretty much run by school kids because anyone over 18 is “too expensive”.

She doesn’t have many fans, I wonder why

  • +2

Why are most front counter staff the most unhappy people to deal with? They seem to be the most disgruntled employees they could find. It always feels to me like it’s the worst job in the place and people would sooner be scurubbing toilets than serving front counter.

What makes this “front counter” job that bad that people just don’t want to do it?

    • +9

Because they have the most contact with customers.

Possible contact with faeces > guaranteed contact with humans.

      • +2

After having worked in the hospitality/casino industry for so long, I can confirm, humans are horrible.

But, I want to know what it is about the “front counter” experience that gets people all disgruntled about their job. What is it in particular that makes this the worst job in the place. What is it that customers actually say and/or do that turns these workers into bitter employees.

I even heard a girl in drive through lose her shit one day because the manager came down and told her to go to front counter and help. She really didn’t want to help on front…

        • +4

Because 20% the customers are on ice another 20% are stoned 10% are drunk 5% are on other gear and 3% are on everything the rest don't need drugs to be assholes.

          • +3

@hawkeye: Have experienced a drug addict come into the store and asked for 2 cocaines. I was like, what?
            "TWO COCAINES!"
The person ended up being arrested.

            • @nxllson: LOL sounds like something you would see at Centrelink.

            • @nxllson: May be TWO COKECANS? ;)

              • @danger163: I actually offered two large cokes.
                "NO!" "TWO COCAINES"
After he was arrested the manager offered to send me home early because he thought I was traumatised.

    • +1

I’m fine with my job, in fact, I like it. I’m still fresh (5 months into employment).
The main reason is because of a recent encounter against some unruly person who yells at the staff. Trust me I get this everyday

  • +1

would you like fries with that?

working at the counter are you a female / would you consider yourself a looker?

    • +1

      Not a female; and no.

      • just referring to the last AMA when OP said it was standard for females to be put in front so state kids hung around..

        • It really depends, but it's often stereotyped that all front counter are females and kitchen are for the males.

    • dude…

  • +2

I've heard someone ordered 1 BBQ sauce through uber eats….

    • +1

Someone ordered 28 water bottles through uber eats at my store

    • +1

Never happened to me but I can imagine that happening quite often. Maybe due to people getting home real late drunk and decide they want a $5.50 BBQ sauce.

  • Is there a limit on number of monopoly tickets that can be redeemed in one go? It's not in the T&Cs, some staffers seem to make up the limit on the spot or were you normally instructed?

    • I’m instructed 2 per person. Some restaurants may allow 3, however.

    • +1

      From T&Cs:

Claim food prizes by 11:59pm 31/10/18 (local time) at participating restaurants (max 1 claim per order) only when relevant food prize is available for purchase.

  • Do you still give discounts to emergency services?

    • +5

      Yup! Half price meals :)

      • +1

Do they have to display card or just show up in uniform?

        • Uniform / ID is fine.

          • @nxllson: What about defence force? I'm ex defence but still have an old ID, lol

            • @Bushbasha: You could try. I don’t think there is, however

      • +1

I'm a doctor in the emergency department. I have a lot of maccas before and after night/evening shifts. I've never been offered a discount 😢

        • Is the emergency department inside the McDonald's carpark do deter robberies? Police get It as cheap protection and it's extended to other emergency services workers as a courtesy. Not many emergency services workers would be on a minimum of $160k. I teach kids who will end up working at Maccas. Do I get a discount for teaching them how to count change?

        • +2

We only offer discounts to emergency services unfortunately :(

By the way, as a doctor you may want to reconsider having Maccas (if you're even serious).

          • @nxllson: Emergency medicine isn't an emergency service? It's in the name.

Plus all the cops and ambos make more money than me😢😢

            • @Save Medicare: except they'll be still making the same in 5 years and your salary will have probably tripled! Not saying you dont deserve it BTW

  • when i was in high school (20 years ago), my friends who worked at maccas would take home the bags of caramel sauce toppings for the sundaes and eat a mouthful at a time to get a sugar high and create long term health problems for themselves and the people they shared the bag with openly on school property.

Does this still happen? has the caramel improved?

i know the long term health problems have improved.

    • Nope. I'm concerned for his health and wellbeing now. Is he okay?
Caramel situation definitely doesn't happen, not at my store at least. It's 24/7.

      • yeah not sure if hes ok now, it kinda robbed him of his personality and ability to communicate with people. i havent eaten maccas since.

        • +3

You can give yourself a lobotomy with caramel sauce?

    • +2

Does this still happen? has the caramel improved?

Umm Caramel is Sugar + Water (98%) what can they improve in making it more healthier?

      • probably give you a lot less.

can of condensed milk in a rice cooker (with enough water to cover the can), cook for 40 minutes, then keep warm for 8 hours (or a work day). thatll give you caramel. mix in some cinnamon, vanilla and chocolate to make some dulce le leche

    • eat a mouthful at a time to get a sugar high

Even though that sounds amazing to me and is something I would've done (and probably did…), can I still have no sympathy for anyone who does this?

      • not in todays age. if i could turn back time i'd slap that spoon of sugar out of the mouth of my younger self a million times.

  • +2

When I show my phone with a mymaccas 4 digit code 9 out if 10 counter staff have to ask a manager for help. Why is this so?

    • +1

Coincidentally you're having your order taken by trainees / people fresh out of training. It's not that hard to key in the mymaccas reward code.

  • A long time ago, Maccas used to 'flip burgers' on a hot plate.
Now there is a presser that does them from frozen,

    • How long does it take for heat up a frozen bigmac/qtr pounder patty?
    • How long do you keep the 'made burgers' before discarded?
    • Does the franchise owner ever come in & work?
    • +2

First question I cannot answer, refer to LikeClockwork’s post for this because it’s kitchen related

The prepared burgers are kept for 5-10minutes before they’re thrown away, mainly because the customer decides they do not want to come pick it up.

Sometimes yes, they may come in and ask if we need any help but usually they dont

    • The clam shell grills (presser as you call it) have been around for 20+ years.
Not sure at what point before then actual flipping happened.

What is the cook time range for 10:1 patties - 36-41s (38s optimum)
What is the cook time range for 4:1 patties - 101-109s (104s optimum)
Bacon cooking time from recollection was under 30 seconds

    • +1
      1. Big Mac's use 10:1 patty. Takes around 40 seconds to cook 8.
      2. Quarter pounder's use 4:1, take around 100 seconds to cook 4 generally.

Burgers are made to order. Literally as you're ordering, we can see what you want and get started. For that reason, if you change your mind sometimes a made burger won't be used. If it's a cheeseburger or another popular burger, it will be kept for a few minutes. If not, or it's been over a few minutes, it's thrown into the waste bin.

I've seen the franchise owner a few times, he only goes into the manager's office to do what he has to do. I reckon he could make a standard Big Mac. When I was training, he watched me make a cheeseburger and I got sauce on his Rolex. Always a good start!

  • Most ridiculous customer complaint?

    • I can’t say that I’ve had ridiculous complaints or ridiculous enough for me to remember, but I’ve had people go overboard and start screaming at us for dirty toilets (we did send someone up), but kept screaming and yelled “you guys have appalling service”

      Patience, lady.

      • I have a ridiculous one you can use instead of your own.

I had black hair many years ago when I worked there and I had some customers asking for an 'emo burger'. Legitimately wanted it as black as black gets, asked for it to be burnt. The guys out the back did so, burnt the patty and fried the buns etc. Then when the customers received it they made a formal complaint that it was burnt…

  • Do many people ask for food to be cooked fresh?

    • +2

Of course! Doesn’t bother us too much. If you want fresh fries just say so, don’t use the ol’ “fries with no salt” trick unless you really want no salt!

      • +3

can I have fries with no salt please, and two packets of salt…

        • +7

… no; but management forces the yes out of me

        • You know the trick to getting fresh fries!

  • how strictly is it enforced on staff for taking/sneaking a few cups/fries-bags ect for the monopoly stickers?

    • You'd get a written warning. It's greedy.

  • Came here for the arts degree jokes. Disappointed there aren't any.

    • +1

Incidentally if you work your way up the management chain, you end up doing Tafe business and management certifications which would arguably be more valuable than your average arts degree.

      • +1

Well, that's just factual and not at all a joke.
