  • is there any way to fit a m.2 drive to the old sata3 connectors? any adapters or converters? and would this limit the speed?

    • There are many adaptors for these M.2 SATA SSDs. I'm not aware of any bandwidth impacts, as it's still SATA, just through an adaptor. To find them, search ebay or google for M.2 2280 to SATA adaptor. I've used them myself in the past.

      • I got this yesterday for my msata Samsung 500gb.

        • That looks to be the incorrect version. The fitting screws are not compatible with 2280 SATA SSDs, rather they're for M.2 PCIE SSDs. If you've bought one, which SSD were you going to pair it with?

This is an example of the correct enclosure.

          • @[Deactivated]: I put it together last night. It is working fine. It's msata like this

            • +1

@Jurgen Haabermaaster: That makes more sense. However, mSATA isn't the same as M.2, and those enclosures aren't compatible with the M.2 SATA devices like this Intel SSD. Too many different interfaces sometimes.

    • They exist but you will be limited to SATA3 speeds. A better option would be M.2 to PCI-E. Once you add in the cost of the adapter you'd be better off just buying a SATA drive.

      • They exist but you will be limited to SATA3 speeds.

SATA3 is 6GB/s, as this SSD is rated.

You can convert M.2 SATA to M.2 PCI-E as noted, but there's no benefit to this. It's not a good idea because it doesn't improve the bandwidth to the SSD. It will still operate at 6GB/s as per SATA3.

Far better to grab a cheap M.2 SATA to 2.5 SATA converter if 2.5 SATA3 ports are available.

        • Whoops, didn't see that this one is so slow. M.2-to-SATA should be more economical as sammy said.

          • @Amarpal: What a time to be alive when 6Gb/sec or real world 500 ish MB/sec is considered slow!

      • True, but it will be clean build without the power and data connectors. And can install on the motherboard connectors in a future upgrade.

    • Yes we have an adapter that will allow this to fit into a 2.5” bay and also support SATA 3 interface, there is no speed limitations as this M.2 has a 6Gbs bandwidth the same as SATA3. https://www.ht.com.au/part/BN446/detail.hts or https://www.ht.com.au/part/bn445/detail.hts
