This is buying RRP. No deal.

  • +8

    $240? Most deals are $170-180?

  • +10

    thanks for the post!
However it would be a financially better decision to purchase on sale. Plus you shouldnt be buying things you cant afford credit cards

    • +4

Unless you happen to be skipping the country soon

    • +9

The economy would grind to a halt if people only bought what they could afford.

  • +1

    How is $240 a bargain ???

  • Much cheaper elsewhere.

  • +11

If you really are having trouble fronting the cash for this then don't buy it. If you still don't want to listen to sound advice then surely you'll find some scummy retailer offering afterpay on this for a less overall cost. There is no deal here.

    • +4

"sound advice" I see what you did there :)

  • +5

Could Afterpay it for cheaper. Let alone potentially damage your credit history for $10/month

    • +2

Damage your credit history? How so?

      • +1

You receive the goods upfront don't you? On credit… And than pay $10/month

If you miss your payment or whatever that is a default blackmark on your credit score as it's above $150.00 (the legal limit to refer it against your credit)

        • +1

All the people risking their credit history by having phone plans, energy providers, Netflix (?).

          • @pizzaguy: Electricity, a household stample or airpods… A little different don't you think?

You're not signing a contract for credit with Netflix, you pay in advance and it's a pay as you go not a plan.

            • @Xiaomi: I get your point here, I don't get your argument from before.

We're risking damaging that credit history every day. You could as well say that wearing headphones can damage your hearing. Or get you in an accident while crossing street.

              • +1

@pizzaguy: I think the only one not making an argument here is you. You don't need the highest IQ to get what I am saying, 5 others seem to have got the point.

  • +9

If you're too poor to pay $200, do you really need this?

    • +3

Does anyone really need most of the crap we buy in life?

  • -3

thanks for the post. paying $10/m is great.

    • +11

      No, no it isn't.

  • +13

Whilst it is a bad deal compared to an outright purchase it may work for some people who have a monthly allowance via their employer which they need to submit a monthly bill for .

    • But even for those that can't afford upfront ~200, is this really a deal when all the telcos do this? Optus has been doing airpods for $10 a month since they came out

  • +5

Also for those who claim it as a work expensive on a monthly plan is easier than outright

  • +1

    RRP cheaper

  • Optus offering this minus 10% off access charge. Depending on plan these could be free.

    • could you elaborate?

  • +2

Not for me to say how people should spend their money, but if you need to put earphones on a payment plan, woof.

  • +4

This is part of an silly attempt by Telstra to push a gimmick offering (this and drones and other random tech) instead of focusing on competitive plans and network stability… And still > RRP - so no deal unfortunately.

    • +1

Just like their stupid 'have you turned off your hair straightener' smart home ads at the movies

      • +1

Something about Telstra ads drive me insane.

Probably because they focus on the lowest common denominator.

And because they rename all standardised technical terms (such as when calling line identification was “calling number display”) for the dumb dumbs.

    • +1

Agreed. Another attempt by Telstra to sell something to customers that don’t have the means to afford them. Above RRP is not a deal. Is after pay available?

  • +5

I can see this slow grind, gradually enticing a new generation into what their parents and grandparents tried so hard to avoid — getting into long term debt. Go on, just another five bucks; another $10 a month; add this for the cost of a cuppa… It’s like the telcos are turning into drug dealers.

    • Omg the line "just for the cost of a cuppa" legit talk

  • Above RRP. No deal

  • No deal

  • I guess Telstra trying to fork up extra profits through this.

  • +1

This is ridiculous - what a poor deal

  • What next? Telstra offering a $300/month contract with an iPhone, Apple Watch, MacBook, iPad, and AirPods?

I get offering phones on contract. I also get offering cellular iPads as standalone, or cellular Apple watches in addition to an iPhone. But AirPods is just a contract add-on for the sake of a contract add-on.

Having said that, I suspect plenty of people will just do it because $10/month is in that price bracket where a lot of people don’t think about it; both those that genuinely want AirPods and those that never considered it.

    • You can put so much on a payment plan…cases, chargers, beats, bose headphones…..

  • More expensive than RRP. No Deal.

  • Good deal if day 1 hardware. I guess it a start for the telco. If they can do this to new phones I see why not.

  • +1

    Wow this is contentious.

This is almost like a Radio Rentals (rent to buy) - inflated RRP, but smaller lump payments. Just think in 18 months when you are still paying them off.. do you want them that badly? Do you need them?
At that same time, if you spent all that on an iPhone…

  • No deal. For once you get a better price from Apple!

  • +1

This might be a good deal if you use your phone for work since you can claim a portion of the monthly cost as a straight deduction in each tax year VS marginal depreciation benefit by purchasing outright.

  • Just buy in store for rrp and save money haha

  • Would be better of getting 6-12 months interest from jb or harveys

  • +1

Telstra will be selling toilet paper and tampons soon $10/Month (24 Month Contract)

    • I would not mind a subscription for toilet paper.

      • Who gives a crap

  • it's generally around $180..
    $240 is not a deal.

  • -1

Wow, people get really fired up about Telstra, don't they?
Presumably nobody here "buys" a phone on a contract.
First time post-er pile on. Welcome!

  • for all those who think this is a bad deal, it sold out

    • It can be a bad deal and still sell out… "a fool and his money will soon depart"
