How to Unlock Huawei E8372h-608 (aka Telstra 4G USB+WiFi Plus 4GX)

I recently bought a Telstra 4G USB+WiFi Plus 4GX mobile broadband modem with a pre-paid SIM card from Coles. The modem is aka Huawei E8372 LTE Wingle (model: E8372h-608) and uses a Standard sized SIM.

I unlocked the USB modem using the following instructions (partly based on master131's comments from a previous deal at https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/299746#comment-4567368).

Guide to Unlock Huawei E8372h-608

1. If plugged in, unplug the USB Modem from PC.
Insert a non-Telstra SIM card into the USB Modem and leave unplugged.
If installed, uninstall "Telstra 4G USB+WiFi Plus" driver via Settings > Apps > Programs and Features.
Restart PC.

2. Get the Flash Code for your USB Modem by entering its device IMEI here: https://unlockclub.ru/flash_code.html
Write down or screenshot the "Flash Code" as it will be used later in step 6.

3. Download the Huawei Serial & COM port drivers here:
http://unlockclub.ru/downloads/FcSerialDrv.rar
http://unlockclub.ru/downloads/Huawei_Drivers.rar

Unpack the drivers (using 7-Zip or similar).
To install the drivers, run the "DriverSetup.exe" from the 2 unpacked folders (wait 30 seconds or so because they install silently)
Run …\FcSerialDrv\DriverSetup.exe
Run …\DriverSetup.exe

4. Plug the USB Modem directly into your PC (avoid using a USB Hub if possible, as some people have reported problems https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/414606#comment-6592437).

5. Download DC-Unlocker from here: https://www.dc-unlocker.com/downloads
Unzip "dc-unlocker2client_1.00.1403.zip".

Right-click on "dc-unlocker2client.exe" and then click Run-as-Administrator.
Press the Magnifying-Glass button to confirm that the drivers are loaded correctly and the modem is detected.
Note the status: SIM Lock Status should be "Locked (Card Lock)" if using a non-Telstra SIM card.
Write down or screenshot the current Firmware version and Dashboard version (WebUI) as they may be useful in future.
Minimize the DC-Unlocker program for now.

6. Download the Firmware (for downgrading the modem) from here: http://unlockclub.ru/downloads/E8372_firmware_downgrade.7z
Unpack "E8372_firmware_downgrade.7z".
Run …\E8372_firmware_downgrade\P711s-WINGLE_Update_21.110.99.04.00.exe to FLASH the firmware and when prompted, enter the "Flash Code" from step 2.

7. Download "Huawei Calculator.zip" (right-click on the file > Download > Standard Download) from the URL below (copy the URL to a browser):
https://mega.nz/#F!3FtiSS6J!Knek_Ws7Q0XaJzdpPE_tLA
Unzip "Huawei Calculator.zip".

Run …\Huawei Calculator\SalluhassanNewHuaweiLowDotNet.exe and select "OEM Code" from the Option drop-down.
Press [Click to Read Data]
Press [Calculate] then write down or screenshot the "OEM Code" as it will be used later in step 10.

From same Huawei Calculator program, select "(NCK) Network Unlock Code" from the Option drop-down.
Press [Click to Read Data]
Press [Calculate] then write down or screenshot the "NCK Code" as it may be useful in future.
Press [Unlock] and if successful, a pop-up should display "Unlocked Directly".

Note: I originally got an error "Device Not Found!" for the NCK [Click to Read Data] step as I hadn't uninstalled the Telstra driver (as per step 1). After uninstalling the driver, I closed then re-ran the Huawei Calculator and selected COM-Port ('COM7' in my case) before repeating the NCK steps.

8. Go to DC-Unlocker and press the Magnifying-Glass button to confirm status: SIM Lock Status should be "Unlocked".

9. Download a newer universal firmware version from here: https://routerunlock.com/?wpfb_dl=1587
Unpack "E8372h-153_P711s-WINGLE_Update_21.210.09.00.00_Universal.rar".
Run "E8372h-153_P711s-WINGLE_Update_21.210.09.00.00_Universal.exe" to FLASH the firmware to a newer version.

10. Download a universal Web UI version from here: https://routerunlock.com/?wpfb_dl=1583
Unpack "E8372H_Update_WEBUI_17.100.11.00.03_RE5_Universal.rar".
Run "E8372H_Update_WEBUI_17.100.11.00.03_RE5_Universal.exe" to FLASH the Web UI and when prompted, enter the "OEM Code" from step 7.

11. Make sure the "Mobile Broadband HL Service" driver from Huawei is installed by clicking AutoRun on the Mobile Broadband drive in Windows File Explorer.

Notes:

  • FIRMWARE: Default (Telstra) version was 21.180.19.12.302, after Unlocking it's upgraded to 21.210.09.00.00

  • WEB UI: Default (Telstra) version was 17.100.07.19.302, after Unlocking it's upgraded to 17.100.11.00.03

  • IP ADDRESS: Default was 192.168.1.1, after Unlocking it changes to 192.168.8.1
If preferred, you can change IP Address back to 192.168.1.1 (or 192.168.x.x) via Settings > WLAN > DHCP

  • This Guide was created for the current OzB deal…

    Telstra Pre-Paid 4G USB + Wi-Fi with 12GB Data $19 (Save $20) @ Coles
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/414601

  • thanks for the guide, can you change the MAC address after unlocking?

    • I can't see anywhere to change the MAC address of the device. The Web UI (v17.100.11.00.03) is very basic compared a typical home Router.

    Thank you

Thanks so much for taking your time to write this. It is so helpful! 😊

  • +1

Thanks so much! Worked like an absolute charm!

  • Which pin do I need to short to downgrade it? I saved the codes in notepad and closed it -_-

    • With the above guide, you don't need to short any pins.
Step 6 will downgrade it to version 21.110.99.04.00.

      • yeah I screwed it up closed notepad with code to upgrade webui

        • This youtube video may help. From 0:26s, they identify the pin to be grounded:
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLecV2IA5c8

Disclaimer: I don't know if this works as I haven't tried it myself.

          • @1bug: Jesus wish I didn't lose that code, spent the last five hours trying to fix this

          • +1

@1bug: Well after 6.5 hours trying to figure this out and navigating horrible forums I finally fixed it. If anyone else makes the same mistake as I did feel free to message me lol. Happy to help.

            • @mooseca: Glad you figured it out.

When you get some free time, I'd appreciate if you can provide a BRIEF summary of the steps you took to fix the problem while it's still fresh in your mind … Thanks

            • +1

@mooseca: Would love to know how you did it too. I'm still going through this pain. But I've also locked with too many attempts to unlock, used "needle" method to reloaded firmware, wiped everything inc IMEI and serialnumber, fixed IMEI and serial number, (thought i'd) unlocked everything, put in aldi sim and its still locked!!

Now, trying to go through the steps again. Can't downgrade, via method above. Modem wont accept usbloader or firmware via needle method above.

I think I've locked myself out now. Might have to wait for another deal and grab another one.

              • @demod: There's a link to a registry edit you need to do if you're using windows 10. Took me about 5 hours to find it haha. Restarted PC once I applied it and USB loader worked perfectly and could downgrade. I'm assuming you've found your way to those horrible forums as well, the edit is linked there. If you can't find it I'll have a look later for you. That's if you're using windows 10 or 8.

You'll know if usbloader worked if the LEDs on the stick flash white. My next problem now is getting it to work with rooter and building a 4G Yagi haha

                • @mooseca: the russian forums! haha killing me. Nope, didn't see that registry edit. I ended up using linux, for balong_usbloader and balongflash.

I even translated the russian (via google) error messages to english in balond-usbloader. Translating everything (the second time I was using it) was killing me.

My issue now is that I cant flash the usbloader. Keeps rejecting it. I think going to version 21.316.01.04.274 has locked me, and I can't go back.

                  • @demod: Are you using that usblsafe file in usbloader? I think that's what it was or similar. I can't remember if I tried going back from that firmware or not. First time was from 21.210 but went up and down multiple times in the end. I'm on 21.316 now but haven't tried it and won't be home until Friday or Sunday night.

Unfortunate for you so far, thought it said that you could downgrade that firmware via needle, but then again it is a slightly different model they talking about

                    • +1

@mooseca: Yeah I had a bunch of trouble at the start, ended up being because I was using a mini-usb hub as a usb extension . So I think I flashed something wrong. I used safe and unsafe :) which is why I lost all my settings. the weird thing is when I attempt a downgrade via step 6 above with the .exe, the downgrade software says I have the wrong device. So.. i dunno. Moral of the story is don't use a usb hub! :)

                      • +1

@demod: Thanks for the feedback. I have added a warning to step 4.

  • +1

    Thank you. Worked perfectly.

  • Cheers for this OP, had an older E8372h that I'd used for a while before changing over to an Aldi sim and it wasn't accepted.

Did your guide and everything worked great, unlocked it and it showed in DC-Unlocker 2 Client as being unlocked, then it just died. Now can't get power to it at all even with using my iPad charger. Have another one here I bought spare a while ago but not really keen to kill that one too :-/ Not sure what happened with it.

EDIT: Actually seems it's not completely dead. When I put it back into the USB port on my computer it detects a remnovable disk, but putting in a micro SD card into it it doesn't allow me to access it. None of the lights are coming on at all.

EDIT 2: Ok scratch all that, it was being detected but had somehow installed the Telstra drivers for it. Uninstalled those, reinstalled both of the 2 drivers in step 3 and it's now back to life! Dunno what happened there but the power light is all back on now and updated the firmware. But it then seemed to reinstall the Telstra drivers again somehow without even being prompted so it failed when trying to install the web UI as it couldn't find it again. Bloody Telstra!

    • +1

I suggest you try the following:

      • Download all the files you haven't yet downloaded.
      • Unplug the USB Modem from PC, then uninstall the Telstra drivers.
      • Restart the PC.
      • Disconnect PC from the Internet, then plug the USB Modem directly into your PC.
      • Update the Web UI (and any other steps not completed).
      • +1

All good, ended up getting it to finally find the modem in windows to update the Web UI and it works perfectly now! Thanks again 1bug!

I had an unlocked one of these Wingles that came with a broadband modem.
Even though there was no sim lock, the dongle couldn't be used in anything other than the modem it came with.
I used this guide to upgrade the firmware (didnt think I needed to downgrade as it was unlocked).
The firmware upgraded, using the Unlock Code from unlockclub.ru
When I got to the WebUI upgrade, it failed as I didnt have the OEM Code (you need to grab this when you DOWNGRADE the firware as per step 6.)
I could not downgrade after I had upgraded the firmware no matter what I tried.
So i had to open up the Wingle, and short the pin while plugging in as shown in this guide here:
    https://n3wunlocker.blogspot.com/2016/03/how-to-unlock-huawe…
    Then had to use
    usblsafe_E8372h.bin
    balong_usbdload_win32
This allowed me to downgrade, get the OEM code, upgrade, then update the WebUI.
    Happy days :)

  • Stuck on steps 9 & 10. It seems I'm getting a port not found - error 10. Tried on Win7 & Win10 with no success.

    • I'd suggest you try the following:
      - Make sure the Telstra driver isn't installed (via Settings > Apps > Programs and Features).
      - Re-install the Huawei Serial & COM port drivers from step 3.
      - Retry step 9.

    • Run dcunlocker and Press the Magnifying-Glass, this will kick it into serial mode

  • I got to step 8 everything was good, DC-Unlocker showed "Unlocked".

I then followed step 9 which started to run and with the progress bar at about half way and seeming to wait a long time, got the message Error Code:10 Find port failed.

There are no lights showing on the USB modem.
When I unplug it I hear the closing driver sound.
When I insert it I hear drivers start at about 15 seconds.
Trying to run DC-Unlocker now says Modem not found. (but it did detect and show unlocked directly after running the Calculator and unlocking)
    Telstra drivers are not loaded.

    What do I do now?

    • +1

Re-install the Huawei Serial & COM port drivers from step 3.
      reboot
Run dcunlocker and Press the Magnifying-Glass, this will kick it into serial mode
      Retry step 9.

    • HI MATE,
      i have same issue
Frozen my dongle. what to do?

please help if u have solution.
      thanks

  • +1

Just thought I'd chime in to say thanks!

I got right to 11 without any major hiccups, but missed the 'click calculate' on #7, and instead copied the entire OEM CODE. Thankfully Huawei Calculator actually simply calculates this data so I could paste it in the 2 fields and let it do its thing.

Now I've got a Kogan sim in, http://192.168.8.1/html/home.html opens, reads 'voda AU' but I don't know the default password to login?

EDIT: a google revealed - User: admin Pass: admin

Also had to change APN in http://192.168.8.1/html/quicksetup.html

  • +1

Thank you for the excellent guide!

I did have some issues in step 9 & 10, I thought I might mentioned it in case other ppl run into the same problem.

After unlocking and before upgrading firmware in 9&10, you might need to close and open DC unlocker as per step 5.
Otherwise the firmware update program can not find the com port due to the driver being unloaded/not in serial mode after unlocking/firmware upgrade process. Remember to run as admin and repeat again for step 10.

  • So I did all the above and DID get it working on Win10 (on a dual boot machine) did stuff in Win7, worked fine (reception is bad here, but still decent speeds), yet now back on Win10 it's not working.

I've looked for and deleted drivers, pulled out and back in, no go.

    Any tips?

    • Is "Mobile Broadband HL Service" (publisher: Huawei Technologies) installed? (Settings > Apps > Programs and Features).

If not, here's a few things to try:

      • Make sure a SIM card is inserted in the USB Modem.
      • Plug the USB Modem directly into your PC (avoid using a USB Hub or USB extension).
      • In File Explorer, right-click on the USB device and select 'Open AutoPlay'.

Amazing Guide, followed it step by step and everything works! I did it on windows 10

  • Thanks for this post. Could you confirm that after converting to E8372h-153 with new firmware (E8372h-153_P711s-WINGLE_Update_21.210.09.00.00_Universal.rar) you haven't lost B28?

    • I don't know how to confirm this.
The Web UI doesn't list the supported bands.

  • +2

after upgrading firmware, i cant get band b28 4G.
    im stuck on Telstra 3G.

my other device which is the same which i havnt unlocked/update got 4G.

  • +3

I contacted Telstra and they've fixed the broken firmware links. Well done them, I didn't expect a quick turnaround on this one.

Grab the firmware while still available:

      thank you so much!

      • No worries! Did you get the B28 back?

        • just tried it before.
when updating, the update wizard keeps popping up "error code:19 download failed"

will give it another go tomorrow.

          • +1

@baybaboy: You'd probably have to use the "needle" method as mentioned above in this thread, if you can't get past that error.

            • +1

              @uk3000: YES!!! thanks mate.
did the needle boot trick. ran the command for the bin file, upgraded with the new firmware, then got 4G!

              • @baybaboy: Are you still locked to Telstra network?

                • @spedohero: its unlocked :)

                  • @baybaboy: And did you manage to get 4G back? I was wondering why the 4G was taken away previously on your device. I just did mine not long ago the telstra UI indicated 4G on optus network.

                    • +1

@spedohero: im living in a regional town which has 4Gx 700mhz band 28. thats the band i lost after unlocking it the first time.
(Actually i did get 4gx but after unlocking it, telstra did something on their end and i lost it)
this new firmware got it back :)

  • How to check if it has band 28? Mine is connecting to 4G

  • Can I suggest you run DC Unlocker earlier in order to be able to copy and paste the IMEI into the https://unlockclub.ru/flash_code.html website? This will prevent any possible typos from misreading the IMEI (by people like me, 43 years old and eyesight is failing).

    Great writeup, thanks!

  • Also, I had a bit of trouble detecting the Huawei after downgrading, after unlocking, and after upgrading. I found that I had to close and reopen DC Unlocker and then it recognised it again.

  • Did the unlock successfully. Thanks to the poster.

Got it working but what is the password? admin admin does not work. I reset the modem to default. Password is admin admin but now the dongle doesn’t work now.

    • After it's unlocked, the defaults are admin for both username & password, and 192.168.8.1 for IP address.

Have you got the "Mobile Broadband HL Service" driver installed in Windows?

  • +1

    Figured it out.

    192.168.8.1
    dial-up > mobile connection

I chose Turn On for data

  • Does anyone has any issue with the device today? It just stopped connecting to internet after i switch on and off since afternoon. The sim card itself is fine which I have tested on a phone.

  • Recently bought one of these Wingles. Have attempted to follow this guide. However, it keeps failing on step 6 with the error:

Error Code 16, Failed to switch the download mode.

Anyone else encounter this issue and know the fix for it?

    Cheers.

WARNING: If you upgrade the firmware of a Telstra 4G USB+WiFi Plus 4GX, your device will no longer be able to connect to Teltra's 4G network.

  • I am unlocking a Telstra branded e8372 (no h or s). Everything seemed to be going swimmingly until step 9:

    1. Download a newer universal firmware version from here: https://routerunlock.com/?wpfb_dl=1587
      Unpack "E8372h-153_P711s-WINGLE_Update_21.210.09.00.00_Universal.rar".
Run "E8372h-153_P711s-WINGLE_Update_21.210.09.00.00_Universal.exe" to FLASH the firmware to a newer version.

When I follow the links to download the firmware I am presented with a page that appears to be trying to sell me an unlock code and no firmware or Web UI download.

Has your post been hijacked or am I missing something?

UPDATE: I am now finding what appear to be firmware downloads by google searching and following links to the routerunlock web site. However, the zip files I am downloading are corrupted, by the looks of it.

    • routerunlock.com is a third party website. Either the website has changed ownership (and is hosting different content), or it's been hacked/hijacked.

I still have copies of the original files from steps 9 & 10. I can make these available via OneDrive (for a limited time) if you like. Let me know.

    • Hi,
I am on the same boat! After spending so much time… i managed to revive it. using Balong USB Downloader 1.0.1.10.exe, boot into safe mode(shorting ground and pin 5) and down his usb safe bin file. Load it on! Then load your original modem firmware.

      • Hi, whereabouts did you get the files, each Balong file I download gets flagged as having a trojan.

Found this - works well if any of the links seem not to!

Just a word of warning - this does not work for the E8372h-320, which is the latest version being sold by Telstra.

    Some more info here.

    • bought one already, wish i had seen this comment earlier :( any idea how to unlock E8372h-320 anyone ?

  • My E8372 stopped working suddenly and says "No Service".

None of the settings have changed, and the SIM card works in another phone.

    I'm with Amaysim.

  • I keep getting 'Device Not Found!' on the Huawei Calculator. The device can be found when using the magnifying glass on DC-Unlocker. Any ideas?

    • I worked out what was wrong…. In step 6 I upgraded the firmware instead of downgraded… so now the firmware is 21.210.09.00.00. I tried to run the downgrade now but it keeps giving me an error… how do I now downgrade it? Thanks in advance~

  • +1

    thanks for the instructions
worked great for me and i upgraded to the telstra ones that people posted.
a tip though that worked fine with me is to: connect to dcunlocker again before upgrading the firmware and the web otherwise the connection was not found.

Does anyone find using this modem slower than just hotspotting from a mobile phone?

    • You'll probably find that a modern mobile phone will have a much faster mobile radio in it (for example the iPhone 13 has a CAT 18 radio) than this 4G modem (CAT 4)

  • Anyone know if the same kind of tricks can be done to unlock/upgrade a 320 model? edit: oops if I look above there's some comments from 2 years ago that say it won't work on a 320 but maybe a new way has been figured out?

  • Update 12/07/2023: Alternative download link for steps 9 and 10.

I have been advised that some download links have expired, so have re-uploaded the following 2 RAR files to OneDrive (see Link below):

  • I’m having issues unlocking these. Anyone able to help me with unlocking?

  • coles have Telstra Pre-Paid 4GX Wi-Fi Plus on sale next week…is this trick still working?

    • Don't think so, it depends on the exact model number. Has to be a (very old) 608.

    • If you are after a cheap 4GX, buy a 4GX pro of marketplace (they will often be advertised with a Telstra Smart modem as backup). Its a 8372D, which is an unlocked* 8372h-608. It can be simply flashed with the Telstra GX Plus firmware. Check the 8372H thread on whirlpool for links.

      • Ive done this and it comes up as unlocked- i havent tried using a non Telstra SIM in it. I assume so. If not… follow the unlocking method above.
      • DId it work?>> How did you download Telstra Gx plus firmware in case it worked for you without unlocked

        Thanks

        let me know

  • @1bug Any chance of doing the same to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/817701? I prefer these usb ones without a battery, much more reliable.

    • Unfortunately, I don't believe the Optus ZTE 4G USB Modem (MF833N) has been unlocked/hacked yet.
