Thank you OP for deal and guide to unlock device. From memory, the Huawei device alone is worth more than $40.

$28 on eBay for unlocked ones

Nice deal, I don't know of I'd have to burn my laptop or the dongle first, what with all the Russian software and unsigned drivers you need to use…

    • +2

i got some when target had them for $9 last year …used over school holiday break as it did the usual 2gb and 10gb bonus, 6 mths later got telstra to unlock for $25, keep receipt if wanting telstra to unlock incase they dispute age of device.

tried to get unlock code off ebay, seems the h version is a tough one and was refunded, hence paid telstra.

i also have an optus version which came as unlocked but they never seem to be on special as often as telstra and when on special are still $39.

these are handy on holiday season and long car trips as it avoids the kids tethering off your phone and hitting the dreaded $10 per gb top up, or running your phone as a hot spot 24x7 which heats it up and isn’t good for the phone or battery.

I had excess Telstra prepaid credit that Telstra used to unlock mine!

It's the perfect combo, Russian software drivers and Chinese gov't hardware

      • +1

        There's no collusion!!

  • do you need to run these with an app installed on a laptop, or once set up can just you plug them into a power bank and they work?

    • +1

Can get plugged in to a power source and be run as a wifi unit. Just doesn’t have a built in battery.

  • Has anyone used one of these for online gaming? I’ve tried my phones hot spot (Kogan/vodaphone) but games are unplayable due to the ping spikes. Would something like this provide a better, stable connection?

    • +1

Kogan/Vodafone is probably your issue. I've gamed while tethering to my Telstra service and it worked well.

    • +1

Yes. My kids use it at my parents place on school holidays. Lag spikes every now and then but generally fine.

  • Is this the 4GX version?

    • The one I bought in October was 4GX version (the box lists "Telstra 4G USB+Wi-Fi Plus" with "4GX" circled in the bottom right).
I assume this sale is for the same model.

    • +1

Can confirm the 4GX version is included.

Just bought one, same decsription as 1bug describes below.

  • Can anyone please confirm if it’s possibl to change the MAC address after unlocking?

    • I can't see anywhere to change the MAC address of the device. The unlocked Web UI (v17.100.11.00.03) is very basic compared a typical home Router.

  • I signed up for Telstra on the 50GB plan at JB Hifi recently. Does anyone know how much it would cost to get a data sharing SIM that I could put into this?

  • +1

Saw this in the catalog and wasn't sure as I already have one of these. But if $19 is a good deal for 12GB data over the Christmas hols…

  • Can anyone please check which stores in Melbourne have stock? I can't check online and it's not available for click and collect and Burwood tell me they can't check stock for me

    • +2

Coles doesn't stock these consistently across stores - try a few more stores. Last time I looked around about only 1/2 of the stores stock these.

      • Thanks!

I called Chadstone and they said they have them….

I'm going to unlock one of these and use my Optus Data Share SIM as a backup internet connection for 2 weeks…

  • +1

Found one at Chadstone, and the unlock works like a charm too!

  • +1

Thank you, I just got one.
The unlock guide was fantastic too.
Working well. This is my internet from now on with kogan.
