Cheaper Netflix Via VPN for Existing / New Subscribers (E.G Basic $4.07, Standard $7.11, Ultra $10.16 Per Month W/ No Fee Card)

9530

Greetings everyone, I was trying to figure out a cheaper way to get Netflix easily (rather than use iTunes billing and other avenues) and I found this thread over at MyDealz, I thought it was worthwhile to share it.

You can get Netflix for significantly cheaper by signing up / renewing via a quick VPN trick. I only just updated my plan 30 minutes ago, and signed up for the Ultra plan (UHD, 4 Devices) via Argentina and got charged 229 Argentinian Pesos which equated to be $8.99 for the month via my no fee card.

This works out to be approximately 50% of the pricing of Australian Netflix (Basic $9.99, Standard $13.99, Ultra $17.99).

Neil also completed a great write up a few years ago about this, check that out for further reference to assist with getting the deal.

Some examples of the pricing can be found here (I have highlighted the cheapest for each package in bold:)

Turkey:

  • Basic: 15.99 TRY (Equates currently to ~$4.06 AUD Per Month)
  • Standard: 27.99 TRY (Equates currently to ~$7.11 AUD Per Month)
  • Ultra: 39.99 TRY (Equates currently to ~$10.16 AUD Per Month)

Argentina:

  • Basic: 129 ARS (Equates currently to ~$4.97 AUD Per Month) Now 149 ARS
  • Standard: 169 ARS (Equates currently to ~$6.51 AUD Per Month) Now 219 ARS
  • Ultra: 229 ARS (Equates currently to ~$8.82 AUD Per Month) Now 299 ARS

Argentina has now been updated to a new pricing structure. Turkey is now the cheapest.

Hits has kindly made a spreadsheet with the current pricing in AUD from the cheapest countries.

If you have access to a VPN, it is an extremely easy process:

For New Subscribers:

  1. Connect to a VPN that has the cheapest pricing for the package you require per the spreadsheet above.
  2. Go to Netflix and enter your details to sign up to a new account.
  3. Go through and select the package that you would like, make sure the prices are in the desired currency per the VPN.
  4. Continue through and sign-up, your billing will now be in the currency per the VPN.
  5. Turn off the VPN and your account will be Australian, but will bill in the cheaper currency.

For Existing Subscribers:

  1. Go to Your Account and Cancel your subscription. It will expire at the end of the billing period.
  2. When the billing expires, Connect to a VPN of your choice, login and click reactivate your subscription.
  3. Go through and select the package that you would like, make sure the prices are in the desired currency per the VPN.
  4. Continue through and complete the reactivation, your billing will now be in the currency per the VPN.
  5. Turn off the VPN and your account will be Australian, but will bill in the cheaper currency.

Your account will only have titles from a different country if you are connected via VPN. With this method, It will charge in the foreign currency, but your account will have Australia titles :)

It is worthwhile to continue to check which country is the cheapest each month to get the best price :)

There's heaps of VPN deals around if you don't have access to a VPN yet, I used Windscribe for reference and connected to Argentina with ease.

I really hope this helps people out, it's definitely helped me out :)

All credit must go to Luca Lutz @ MyDealz for the help.

As always, enjoy!

yes, had to buy a 100 TL gift card and it worked
      https://www.g2a.com/en/netflix-gift-card-100-tl-turkey-i1000…
bit more expensive to get started by only way i could get it to work

      • Had same issue.
Tried Maxchange's method (thanks) but G2A wouldn't let me buy a gift card either.
Using Private Internet Access (VPN provider) via Turkey for both.

      • Can't buy it anymore- Product temporarily not available. Any other sources?

        • when i was looking a few weeks ago that is all i could find..

      • -1

Any other ways? G2A is out of stock :(

  • I've tried this with NordVPN (paid) and on checkout about 2 months ago and it didn't let me go past inserting my credit card info so YMMV. If someone tries this and it works, please let me know

      see above

      • gold

    • Using Nord via Argentina and all prices are in USD and just as expensive as no VPN. No way to change the currency through the sign up process either.

      • I managed to get around this! Use CyberGhost VPN - they offer a 1 day free trial on the app

    AUD version of the spreadsheet

    • thanks!!

      Thank you :)

There appears to be a problem with the payment method you are trying to use. When using VPN in Turkey annd using VISA

    • +1

Yeh getting the same message when trying to reactivate via Argentina

      • Same with argentina

    • Connected to Turkey via PIA VPN last night and used my normal mastercard, accepted and working a treat.. half price!

  • Haha me thinks this won't last long…however while it does. WOOO!

Lasted for 3 years at least so far!

I'm a little confused what Netflix content you receive. Signup via VPN for Argentina reoccurring billing and then watch Australian content on normal Australian IP?

    • +4

Did you even read the deal?

Your account will only have titles from a different country if you are connected via VPN. With this method, It will charge in the foreign currency, but your account will have Australia titles

    • +1

The content u receive is based on the IP at the time you watching. You want to watch US content log into US VPN, u want Australian then don’t use VPN or use Oz VPN

  • +1

Confirmed you have to wait till your netflix subscription lapses at your next billing cycle. If you click re-enable midway through a billing cycle you can't change anything

    • Ah so basically have to wait til I can't use my netflix account then renew using this method for it to work right?

      • Correct or create a new Netflix account if you don't want to wait.

        • Awesome thank you! As much as I'd love it now I can't be bothered connecting all my devices to a new netflix account haha. Thanks again!

  • +1

You can do this just with a dns - no need to be logged into a VPN.

    • +1

      Guide us oh wise one

      • Google smart DNS providers - sign up to trial - route to an Argentina server using their web platform (put DNS provided into you device network settings).

  • +2

Nothing new but now that it's on Ozb I'm sure Nwtflix will close that loophole.

    • Quick delete this thread then…

    • +1

It’s been on ozb for over 3 years

  • Damn alot cheaper than me buying iTunes gcs at 20% off

Cards not working via argetina vpn :(

  • +3

Use cyberghost vpn, has multiple countries and gives 24 hour free trial just need to make throwaway hotmail account.

    • This worked for me, though I'd recommend signing up via the app/program, since I didn't seem to get a free trial when I signed up via the website.

  • Argh….right after being billed two days ago and going out and spending $85 on a $100 iTunes gift card today. Will still give this a shot for the next billing period and just go nuts with Apps to make use of the $100 credit.

    • You’ll need to create a new Netflix account to switch from iTunes billing to direct credit card billing anyway, so you don’t need to wait until your next billing period.

      • Really? I thought it was just a matter of cancelling the iTunes billing and signing up again once the current month ends? You can't sign up again using the same email address that had iTunes billing?

        • +1

Correct, If you cancel the itunes billing then wait until the month ends then it will allow you to reactivate against Netflix billing.

The risk is, if you cancel iTunes billing, you cannot get back onto it because they are not allowing Aussie Accounts to join iTunes Billing anymore. So if Netflix closes this loop hole before you get to take advantage of it, then you are left with a full price account with no way to get any discounts. lol.

            @lplau: Hmmm…decisions, decisions!

          • +1

            @lplau:

they are not allowing Aussie Accounts to join iTunes Billing anymore

            WAT?
            When did they change it?

            • +1

@SickDmith: I joined Netflix yesterday through iTunes, so they are allowing it. It was not a new account and I had cancelled my Netflix, allowed it to expire, purchased $100 Itunes GV and re-subscribed yesterday through iTunes for the first time

  • Has anyone got a similar review for Spotify?

Ok! I need three fellow Ozbargainers to split this toward a shared Premium account, who's in?

  • Honest question. What's the difference between piracy and circumventing netflix restrictions?

    • +1

      Easy access.

    • You're paying for it. You might be breaking Netflix's terms and conditions, but it's not illegal.

      • Pretty much like buying a child ticket at a museum, or a pensioner ticket on a train when not being in that category though.

You're certainly paying for the use of that service, but not at a rate that the company has agreed to charge you.

        • +1

Except when you rort state owned utilities they can come down heavy handed on you with fines, etc. When you rort private/public companies the most they can generally do is stop trading with you. The risk is quite different.

        • Not really as as location restrictions are company stupid restrictions like region locked dvds

      • +1

So are you paying a fair amount to content creators?

    • 1; If Goodguys sells a Samsung S9 cheaper than JBHiFi, is it wrong to buy from Goodguys because JB own Goodguys now and so you're circumventing JB's higher price?
2; Is using a non-targeted discount voucher piracy? Surely a code you "found" on the web should not entitle you to a discount.
3; If the Aussie dollar falls against US$ (it has since I started my subscription) shouldn't I automatically pay Netflix (a US company) in the equivalent increased US$ - I used to pay more than the US$ equiv, now I pay less….for now.

      • What? The contract is void if you've lied about your circumstances. So basically this is paid piracy. I'm not against it. Just saying.

  • Does anz charge conversion fee

  • Now all I need is a CC with no conversion fee :(

    • +1

Called a Citibank card, or a 28 Degrees. Seriously I don't know why so many people are still putting up with the abusive exchange fees.

      • +1

Also, ING Direct give 0 fee debit cards too.

  • Anyone doing a family account that I can join onto?

        • pm

      • Been trying to pay with 3 different Au CC, how are you planing to pay for the Argentinean? Doesn't seem to work for anybody

        • +1

          worked with 28degree

          • @ujwols: Doesn't work for my 28degrees. I am connected via PIA to turkey. It rejected the card.

        • worked with Citibank

  • Anyone still access via getflix?

    • Nope - it won't work on my PS4 or Panasonic TV.
On a desktop, it kind of works but it takes FOREVER to load a show, even on NBN. It's basically unwatchable as it constantly buffers and is very low quality.

So much for my "lifetime" Getflix account.

    • All good here but I pay yearly which apparently grants access to different servers (that work) unlike the lifetime subs.

    • +1

The lifetime sub is useless. Slow as hell

    • +1

Also still using Getflix as a yearly sub (not lifetime) and have had minimal issues.

Every few months I get the VPN message but usually it is fixed in a day or two (and I also switch between AUS/US semi-frequently). Apart from that it loads UHD content fine. Will also use their VPN to access this deal..

      • Does it just work on the desktop, or will it now work for the household? Haven't bothered with mine for ages since I was tired of getting Proxy error

        • Got the DNS set up in the router so it works across all devices in our house.

          • @ElectrkJonesy777: Awh, I did that before and still got the proxy errors on ipads and consoles. Maybe Netflix just blocked my account from Non-Aust locations :[

            • @MeesusEff: Wow so people were right about the getflix lifetime subscription, it was just a rort to get peoples money, how can they give different services like that, i have the lifetime and it has been of no use to me :(

  • what are the credit cards which don't charge any converting fees?
    I have ANZ and ComBank

    • ANZ have the Travel Adventures card, which is what I use. It has an annual fee though. Other options are the BankWest platinum cards, or the 28 Degrees Mastercard.

  • +1

Now to buy discounted Argentinian iTunes gift cards and use them to pay for an Argentinian Netflix account…

  • +3

A great VPN for watching US and UK Netflix is Windscribe.

    I just bought a yearly sub for ~$17 AUD via Stack Social;

    https://stacksocial.com/sales/windscribe-vpn-1-year-pro-subs…

    • I used to get a lot of countries through SmartDNS but now only works for US… UK is good too but interested in hearing of other services that allow streaming from multiple other countries. Also struggle to find a good website for searching Netflix library by region - unogs.com is best i've found so far but often out of date.

  • -7

Personally I'm happy to pay the extra few dollars a month in Australia for these services given the comparatively better wages and conditions Australians have compared to these countries. I find it unethical and hope that it doesn't cause trouble for the actual residents of these countries.

    • +2

      This is OzBargain.

      • -1

        What's your point?

      • I agree with SinsiterHunter6.

We may be bargainers, but do we go to the point of being unethical for a bargain?

I'm not sure myself if this is ethical or not, i'm trying to find out.
