  • Anyone knows any ultrabook better than XPS13?

    • +1

Better can mean different things. To me anything with glossy display is just bad. I’m looking at thinkpad X1 and Fujitsu U938. There is a much cheaper option MSI PS42, but it’s a bit flimsy. Might want to check them out. There is also zenbook but the reviews are mixed. Just my 2c

      • Hey mate found any good prices on the U938?

      • I think the one advantage the MSI PS42 has over the XPS is the discrete GPU. The MX150 isn't meant for serious gaming, but it can handle indie/older games just fine, and some eSports titles on low-medium settings.

If you want to do some light gaming or even stuff like video editing on the go, I have a brand new and sealed unit I could give away for ~$1300?

    • Prefer Lenovo X1 Carbon over this, but both have pros and cons.

    • +1

Just got a Microsoft Surface laptop i7 8/256gb for $1470 from a previous deal and very very happy with it
not just fit and finish but the QC is good - no coil whine, no overheating battery, no light bleed, touch screen responsive, good brightness, wifi card very fast and finds 3x as much signal as my previous Zenbook etc etc
almost as good as my wife's macbook pro
if only it had a USB-C port …

      • Which deal?

    • i dont define xps as ultrabook as it is quite thick. but if you looking for silimar form factor, the Matebook X pro is really good.

My roommate just bought one, so i compared it with my 13' 2017 MBP, And i was using XPS13 before got the MBP.

      1. the screen is better than xps, 3000x2000 and 450nit and especially love this aspect ratio over than XPS (my main point).
      2. cant comment on speaker vs XPS, but vs my MBP, it is not as good, just lack a bit bass, but still really good speaker dont get me wrong (and MBP has best speakers 2017)
      3. Great battery life (same as my MBP), as me and my mate just doing our thing side by side on the table for the rest of the night, they last pretty good while (just general task.)
      4. awesome price if you can get it , he got it around 1300AUD from ebay i5 8250U 8G 256GB MX150 version. (the MX150 in the benchmark is 3time better than HD620)
      5. build quality is even better than XPS. solid body, gorgeous screen. horrible face cam angle but no longer need to worry about a spy.
      6. better keyboard than MBP(but it is MBP style approuch), and XPS still has best Keyboard along with Thinkpad. But it is subjective anyway.
      7. same weight as my MBP, bigger body, but really thin bezel looks awesome.
      8. if i choose windows as my OS, i will go this over than XPS13 personally.
      9. great port, 3.5mm, USB-C, Thunderbolt (typeC), and a USB-A !!! (but the TB suffering half bandwith issue as it shares with the GPU)

overall, the screen is just the killer here. and everything else is just very good. no major flaw, great quality, great price, and nvme can be replaced later on if you choose to(not with ram tho). the keyboard is water resistant(not 100% sure, just what i heard).

anyway might worth you a while to dig into a bit.

$1300 is an awesome price, ebay prices all seem like you'll need to pay closer to $2k

    • It's a very good all round package in terms of thinness and aesthetics. But it's not the cheapest you can get for the specs.

You can get the same internals in any laptop for cheaper, if you don't mind it not looking as nice on the outside. It's one of the smallest 13" laptops you can buy.

One complaint people have with XPS is that the camera is below the screen and reveals your boogers.

I think there is still room for refinement. The lower bezel is still big even if the other 3 sides are narrow.

Are there better laptops? It depends how you define better. Lenovo makes a laptop with an OLED display. I would call that better. But they haven't updated it in 2018.

  • Picked this up from the outlet last week for $1249. No complaints at all, was returned for a 1mm 'graze' to the bottom of the laptop.

  • Delivery: Estimated between Fri. 7 Dec. and Fri. 14 Dec. ?

    • I remember years ago when I got my XPS13 it took forever to be delivered. But it did come earlier than the long delivery date.

    • Woah. Why that long wait.

      • +1

After you order, it takes Dell a few days to process your order, another few days to commence build, 2 weeks to ship to Australia (to Dell's office), and another few days to send it to you. These laptops are built-to-order, they do not have ready-stock.

  • Some of these have an optional touchscreen display.

  • This or this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/414321 what do you guys reckon?

    • I reckon if you dont mind sacrificing portability, sub-full day battery life and aesthetics. Go with the lenovo.

    • +2

Not a fair comparison with this being almost 2x the cost… Performance-wise, there isn't a massive difference. The XPS is ahead as far as the display, storage, design/build quality and battery life goes, but there's nothing 'wrong' with the Lenovo - it's a great machine. EDIT: Also, no backlit keyboard on the Lenovo.

    • apples and oranges mate

    • Yeah seems heaps better value.

      • and you won't have to wait a month for it!

    • Would also be much easier to deal with warranty through JB, especially after the first year.

      • Warranty is the same tho. Next business day onsite warranty from dell for the first year then its ACL after..

  • +1

Is 9360 being made concurrently with 9370 as an alternative, or was it supposed to be phased out?

  • My experience:
Bought a pretty resembing one 30 months ago, except the i5-6200U cpu from DELL ebay at about $1,450 or so.
12 months after the purchasement the battery began to swell and eventually push the keyboard upward.
Dell denied the 3-year warranty as it considered the problem only related to the battery with 1-year warranty.

So was my partner's same type laptop and hers even swelled more severely — she had to give up the touchpad.

I didn't mean to discourage purchase, but it'd be better to enquire DELL first.
