Telstra Broadband - No Contract Plans Now Have Setup Fees Waived (Plus a Free Google Home Mini if You Signup before Dec 25th)

1320
Update: please read the comments in this thread - there have been numerous reports of mistakes being made during AND after the order.

Telstra unlimited cable broadband 50/5 Mbps now $89 per month with all setup fees waived.

This is the cheapest non-contract cable broadband from Telstra I have seen.

You get unlimited 50/5 cable internet, free latest modem, and free calls to landlines and mobiles in Australia (and a free Google Home Mini if you signup before Dec 25th).

I will be getting this while I wait for HFC NBN to be available in my area.

Ps. This is an online only deal, not sure if you can get it from a Telstra shop.

Also, this deal applies to new customers (although the website only mentions moving home).

Edit 1: Current Telstra customers - after reading the comments it appears that at least one current Telstra customer was able to get this deal applied as well, by chatting with an agent online.

Edit 2: Non-cable internet - this offer applies to all broadband connections, not just cable (according to a few comments in this thread).

I entered my address, chose the plan, when asked if I was an existing customer I clicked 'No' and I got a 'Good news we're waiving the $240 setup fee for you'message.

There have been numerous reports that sometimes the discount is not applied, others report (as has been my experience) that various discounts will be applied when using different browsers/devices (even by the same person).

I have had anything from $0 to $99 to the full $240 setup payment depending on device/browser before I was able to get the full discount - So if you're a new customer enter your address and check for yourself if it works for you.

If the link provided doesn't work, try this one (which is essentially the homepage for this offer) https://www.telstra.com.au/latest-offers/moving-offer

I got the initial message but when proceeding further into the process the fee is added.

EDIT There are two setup fees, a $240 connection fee which is waived and a $240 casual plan fee which is not waived

        • Spewwing, can’t afford the fee atm but would jump ship from Optus if it wasn’t there -.-

          • @Skids andy: See for yourself - tere should be no NET fee aside from the monthly cost @skids_andy (the $240 connection credit cancels out the $240 casual plan fee during signup/checkout)

@designed2last got it sorted by using a different browser (in another post he/she mentioned using Chrome which didn't work but he got it working on Firefox).

The telstra website says I can get cable but there isn't a cable port in my apartment. Will this cover that installation fee?

    • +1

same happened to me, will see how much extra that may cost…

    • If you ever had Foxtel cable, you have the outlet.

      • We have never had it as far as I know.

        • Oh, ok. Have a look around the outside of your home (it usually says Telstra) but its a Foxtel cable box (Telstra and NewsCorp own Foxtel 50/50).

You can tell it's not an ADSL internet from Telstra box because it has thick coaxial wires coming out of it.

          • @BooYa: If its a new house and no cable at all?

          • @BooYa: As it one one house which has subsequently been split into multiple units I would assume the plug is in one of the other units. However I am putting the unit number into Telstra's address field and it is being recognised as having cable.

            • +1

@froggym: It can be a real pain getting any internet connection with these split unit dwellings. That's a tricky one.

            • @froggym: They won't install.

Well they will. But it'll cost you thousands to get the installation.

Telstra have a policy of either connecting ALL units in a block or non at all.

IF it's not townhouses/units, they won't even try.

We're the front town house, the pole is directly in front of our property, conduit to the property already exists but they wouldn't install a connection, unless all 3 properties were connected (commercial install - $5-10K typically).

I went all the way to complaints, as I was told 3 times the front property would be fine. Got no where. Telstra are idiots.

I connected to Telstra cable this Oct, I thought I did not have cable at my house and was quoted around $400 for an electrician to come over but turned out previous owner had used foxtel so $400 saved :)

  • I entered my address, chose the plan, when asked if I was an existing customer I clicked 'No' and I got a 'Good news we're waiving the $240 setup fee for you'message.

When I continued to the final stages of processing my order the $240 fee is NOT waived.

    • I suspect it's an error.

@o2saint said (a few comments up) that his/her order went through, and that he confirmed it with Telstra afterwards.

I wonder if they did a sneaky on him/her too?

      • This has been resolved - design2last mentioned in another post here that it didn't work for him/her on Chrome, but worked on Firefox. Try a different browser if any problems, and confirm with Telstra afterwards.

        • +1

Also work with Microsoft Edge, I just tried and the $240 has been deducted.

          • @0HDAM: Funny thing is - I first got it to work with Chrome on my mobile but the mobile site had issues with some page elements (eg choosing title from the drop down list).

Then when I tried to signup on my PC I couldn't get the discount on Chrome or Firefox (with and without addons etc).

Finally, got it working on Edge browser, and submitted the order and got the email confirmation yesterday.

But, trying the order tracker on the Telstra website says it can take up to four hours (but it's been a day since then) so I rang Telstra rep who confirmed the details (but did try to upsell a phone on contract).

Either way, I got my order through with the rep to call me back tomorrow (said the online orders can take 24-48 hours before agents can even see it).

We'll see what happens tomorrow, but there is no problem with getting the fees waived at all, the rep says he was well aware of the offer, so fingers crossed (to be honest, I was hoping to get things moving quicker though, as I read that some people who put an order through yesterday are already getting confirmations tat their modem is on the way).

            • +1

@BooYa: I managed to get it working by opening it in desktop mode on my phone in incognito using chrome. It is ridiculous how bad their scripting is.

              • @froggym: Forgot about desktop mode in the phone browser!

That would probably have solved the drop-down list not working when I first found the discount, but couldn't actually continue to place the order because of some page elements not working the way they should.

                Good tip. Thanks.

  • +1

Just signed up! Switched from TPG to Telstra. Woohoo

    • Any problems at the checkout? A few people are reporting getting the connection fee added at the checkout.

If you could confirm this with Telstra (or check your invoice) I'm sure we'd all appreciate it.

      Thanks.

      • +2

I can confirm that the $240 is waived on my invoice.

        • Doesn't work for me. I tried multiple browsers and addresses. The fee is not waived?

EDIT There are two setup fees, a $240 connection fee which is waived and a $240 casual plan fee which is not waived

        • -1

I believe you were still charge a $240 casual plan fee?

          • +1

@design2last: The casual plan fee is waived, and worded as "Mover's offer - Connection fee waiver".. I only see $69 in my invoice and confirmed with Telstra that this is the ongoing monthly fee, and there is no one-off fee

            • @victorheaven: You would save me and a lot of people the head ache if you could screen shot this for us by any chance ?

              • +1
                • @victorheaven: Thanks.

Mine seems to include the damn casual plan fee..

                  You selecting new customer ?

                  • @Skids andy: Yes, new customer.

                  • +2

@Skids andy: I got that as well, I tried incognito/private browser and the fee is waived.

still have to wait for the processing though

                    • @r0xz: Yeah tried on phone and it says $89 minimum now…

Cis says minimum is $300+ … gonna wait for a invoice I guess ?

                      • @Skids andy: @victorheaven that's exactly what I see - the $240 connection fee credit, cancels out the $240 casual plan fee debit, giving a NET setup fee of $0 (with just the monthly fee of $89 as per your screenshot).

Design2last got it working by changing from Chrome to Firefox according to another post. I suggest trying a different browser and/or disabling any addons, plugins, or extensions that may be blocking scripts on the Telstra page (I couldn't even select title "Mr" during the signup process on my mobile Chrome browser but the rest was ok).

Just need to find a browser that works, which is a pain as it's an online-only offer.

                      • @Skids andy: Glad you got it sorted.

Remember that at the very top of the CIS statement it states that 'this may not include any discounts or promotions which are run from time to time'.

So just point to that if you get any extra charges, and demand that you get what they offered when you signed up.

  • Can u setup to have the connection end of Jan and still get the offer ?

    • Yes. Says it's valid till the 25th of February if I'm not mistaken.

But you will not get the free Google Home Mini as that is only valid until the 25th of December.

    • +1

I did exactly just that. Signed up just now (with 24/7 live chat agent) and have service to connect in January 2019.
Modem and Goggle home mini included, $240 connection fee/modem waived.

edit: also no service no charge, if you change you mind before the service is provided.

      • Sweet. Thanks !!!

      • Sweet. Thanks for the feedback.

Edit: No service no charge? Lol, Telstra is up to something (or they've lost their mind).

But it's certainly good to see them offer a competitively priced product for a change AND not being xxxxs about it.

Actually it makes me wonder what they're up to with this. I thought will there be cheaper plans coming out soon?

Then I realised that it doesn't matter as I'm not going to be stuck on the plan anyway as it's a no contract deal.

        • +1

They always have this, they use it to kinda pressure you to sign up saying you can back out at any time before connection.

          • @Nalar: And they have your contact details. If you backed out you'd probably end up with a few telemarketing calls from Telstra (which isn't always bad if they can beat their previous offer)

      • Meaning, they will send the google home mini before the connection date and not charging us?

      • +1

Interesting, the 24/7 live chat - I chat with a machine and advised to ring 1800 834 273, which I did and advised that they can only hold up to December installation. If I want to be connected end Jan, I will need to cancel the order and reorder in Jan. What ???

  • Wasnt Telstra Cable hit with some mass outage last week?

    • yes, that was in eastwood, epping area, due to construction workers damaged the cable line while digging

  • has anyone whom is a CURRENT Telstra cable member, successfully applied for this deal? I was able to get the connection fees waived when i select "not a current telstra customer", but did not proceed with it.

    • I'm in the same boat. Currently off contract, have been waiting around for a reason to sign back up to a contract

      • I would cancel and then signup again if the downtime wasn't too long. The offer is good until 25th of February 2019.

If the downtime would be too long, there may be a workaround:

According to a poster in this thread, apparently you can sign-up for this offer in advance (sign-up now with a connection date at a set future date).

It should theoretically be possible for another family member (who is not on the current bill) to sign up now with connection scheduled for a future date (just after your current period/contract ends).

Now, I would be weary of this because the more complicated things get the more possibility of something going wrong.

Except that this same poster mentioned that Telstra told him/her when they were signing up in advance that they could cancel their 'preorder' right up until the connection date.

      • Hi Hipsi, I managed to get this deal after chatting to several agent online. I spoke to Richard this morning and he apply this offer for me without hesitation, despite me being with Telstra at present. Try your luck.

  • telstra keep charge me money even tho i have disconected their services. Spend me 3 months(20+ calls and 20+ online chat and then they said will refund me and send me an cheque) but now i still not yet receive anything. Checked with them few times and they keep send to an incorrect address, after fixed the address, now stil not yet receive the cheque…..

  • what if you cant get hfc only adsl will you still qualify for this promo?

    • Yes. You should.

I read in this thread someone on NBN (FTTN) got this deal too.

  • +2

Setup (Connection Fee) is waived but the $240 Casual Plan Fee is NOT waived.

    • +1

      Those are the same thing.

      • Not according to two Tesltra chat reps? But they could definitely be telling me the wrong thing!

        • +1

Previous to now, I've only ever seen two fees for their casual plans:

          1. Casual/install fee
          2. Modem fee

Both are being waived here, and from past experience it doesn't get waived until the order is processed, so you'll still see it at check out. Worst case scenario, you can cancel the order.

          • +1

            @jasswolf: "Thanks for choosing Telstra.
Great news! We’re waiving the $240 connection fee on your new broadband plan."

Then I get hit with Casual Plan Fee of $240?

          • @jasswolf: how do you cancel the order?

            • @r0xz: Contact the activations team and tell them to cancel the phone and cable orders, and that you don't want any services with Telstra.

If they stumble through any of this, just ask to speak to the complaints team.

        • -1

They are definitely 2 different fees. Went to go to a casual plan a few months ago and the initial cost was going to be $500 odd just to switch

          • +2

@SnailZebra: There should be only one set up fee.

$99 for 24 month contract and $240 for casual plan (the set up fee is loaded up by $151 due to not contracting).

Also confirmed with Telstra live chat, that there is only ONE $240 to be charged in the first month, and will be waived.

This link includes all the information we need, minimum cost for casual plan is $329, suggesting only $240 is applicable. (Again, this is waived under this promotion)

          • -1

            @SnailZebra: $240 casual/install fee + $210 modem + $99 first month = $549

    • Correct, im seeing the same thing too.

  • Where do we put the installation date ?

  • +1

This is a good deal if you can get a standard install for the cable, but be aware of any issues with your existing phone line pit, as that is likely where the cable install will be coming from.

Signed my parents up for this via JB Hifi in June (that deal threw in a Telstra TV box and a free month @ $99 on-going), and due to an existing cable being fed through a split pit with the adjacent property, the installer claimed it couldn't be done, then the follow up consults would have been hundreds with the possible install quote being $1000s to apparently dig a new pit.

To top all that off, once the sale order was cancelled, they processed the phone order separately despite being repeatedly told not to, then initiated an ADSL order, kicking them off their existing TPG service. The TIO could do nothing…

  • +1

I signed up for FTTN and successfully processed

    • Was the casual plane fee waived?

      • +1

        Yep, total cost only $89

        • Strange… What state are you in?

            • +1

@yht: So very confusing! After much trial and error this is what I have come up with.

Try multiple browsers and computers/devices. I attempted getting the deal using Chrome and the $240 Casual Plan Fee was on my invoice. I then tried the deal using Firefox and my invoice had $-240 Mover's off - Connection Fee Waiver which cancelled out the $240 Casual Plan Fee! So my first month invoice is only $89.

The confusing thing is that there are indeed two different charges. If your premise requires professional installation (ie your house has not had cable internet connected before) this normally costs $240. However, if your house already has Telstra connection then you don't need to pay the $240 but you still need to pay $240 access to the casual plan. So even though my house already has Telstra cable connection, the offer of free connection fee of $240 is cancelling out my Casual Plan Fee which is a different charge entirely.

  • +1

I think what is happening is all existing Telstra customers have both the setup and casual once of fees waived, but new customers only get the setup fee waived, hence the extra $240 fee

    • No. You get a $240 credit for the connection, and a $240 debit for the casual plan fee, the NET result is $0 setup costs for new customers, and existing customers moving home.

Please try a different browser and disable any addons, extensions, or plugins that may interfere with scripts on the Telstra page, then proceed to signup (you will get the invoice details before you even enter your name).

It should look like this screenshot provided by @victorheaven https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/67354/63851/telstra.pn…

      • I've tried three browsers and chatting with the reps and can't get it to be less than $240 one off and $89/month. I've never had a telstra account (or any other internet) so I have nothing to transfer.

And the above offer which you are mentioning is to move your current plan at new address

Why do I need installation fees? Don't you just mail a box?

There is a lot of work that goes into activating the account.
E.g. creating/updating your account, configuring your broadband service, conducting checks to evaluate if selected broadband is available at your premise, conducting a credit assessment etc.

        • Strange. I just called them on 132200 and spoke to a sales rep called 'Grant' who said he's a senior product manager or something.

He said he was well aware of the offer, confirmed no fees except for the monthly fee of $89 on a casual plan (total upfront cost) free Gen 2 modem, free calls, etc.

The only thing I forgot to ask was about the Google Home Mini (but I have the order email from Telstra confirming this) if I need it.

He couldn't find my online order initially but said that can take 24-48 hours before they can see it on their system.

I did try to confirm several details in the offer and he confirmed everything like it was nothing special or new to him.

He did try to upsell me a phone plan but other than that I have had no issue confirming the deal.

To be honest, he did seem to be more interested in selling me a phone deal (I suppose it's his job) as he just kept asking about my mobile phone situation, and offered me what I thought was a pretty decent deal of a Telstra mobile on a 12 month plan with 30 Gig data for $39.

You could try ringing instead, pointing to this thread.

  • doesn't apply to new customer apparently. I asked their chat and they said it's only for existing customer, not new customer

    • Does that mean that I can apply for this despite being a current internet user but out of contract?

      • +1

Try a different browser and devices.

    • It applies to new customers, and existing customers moving premises.

If you read the comments you will see that new customers have successfully signed up with no extra fees.

All I can suggest is try and check for yourself, online - this is an online only offer.

The people you spoke to in chat may not be aware of it if it's a new offer especially since they don't process online only orders (or they could just be mistaken or trying to get sales commissions).

Either way, trust Telstra to make things more complicated than they should be.

  • -1

$240 connection fee for casual plan.

    • +1

Try a different browser and/or device

  • +1

    Lol even works with NBN.:)

    HFC

  • Can you apply now and ask for a installation date in the future?

    • Yes, but people in this thread have been given conflicting advice from Telstra - some have been told till January, some have been told that only until December 25th.

I'm not sure if there may have been a misunderstanding as the 25th of December is the date that the Google Home Mini is available with this offer, while the offer otherwise ends on the 25th of February.

  • So as long as it says 89 you’re good? Even if it says 240 for casual plan?

    • If it looks like this, it should be fine https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/67354/63851/telstra.pn… (thanks design2last for the screenshot). You will get the same order confirmation by email.

The key is that it should show the NET setup fees of $0 ($240 credit and $240 debit) with just the monthly fee as your ONLY first monthly charge.

if you cancel your NBN within 3 months , prepare to pay the stupid $100 penalty to disconnect the voip service

    • Correct, as it is mentioned in the Critical Information Summary.

      • +1

Yes, except at the very top of the CIS is this qualification "This summary may not reflect any discounts or promotions which may apply from time to time".

And the minimum cost over 1 month on this deal is $69 or $89 (for cable depending on plan). This is from the screenshot of the order taken by design2last https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/67354/63851/telstra.pn… (at the very bottom of the pic).

I have the same information on my order (minimum cost for 1 month $89). I'll upload a copy later when I have time.

  • Is there NBN tier 100 option at all?

    • nvm, found it in CIS and it's $30 extra.

      • For the cable connection on this plan it is $20.

  • +1

Thank you OP, I also used this as a leverage on my existing plan. There was neither ADSL (no ports were available in the area) nor NBN at my new flat so my only option was cable internet. I signed up for the plan with Telstra TV for $99 per month approximately 3 months ago. The initial cost of this plan at that time was over $400 so I went for the 24 month contract; however, I was still charged a $99 Connection fee for being a new customer. After I saw this, I contacted Telstra through Live Chat and ranted at them about how it was not fair to put me on a contract plus charge a connection fee and then come up with a flexible no fee option like this. After about an hour of quarrel which ended up at the complaints department, I have been credited half of the connection fee I paid for, been put on the $89 plan instead of $99, besides I got to keep my Telstra TV subscription for free and I will be getting the free Google Home Mini as well :) Couldn't get rid of the contract obviously but happy with the rest. If anyone else is in similar shoes, I suggest don't stop hassling until you get something tangible back.

  • Just received an email from Telstra that they are progressing my order and have my new number already. Bloody too efficient. Login online and found that the schedule connection is in 2 weeks. Gee ! How do we change that ?

  • Got it to work too.

Though it says 'Mover's offer - Connection fee waiver'. Wonder if they'll deny it.
