KFC Overcharged Me on Sunday Night

Hi,

I went to my local KFC on Sunday night and bought the $10 popcorn chicken bucket. I only checked my CC statement today, and noticed they charged me $20.

If I were to go back and ask for a refund, will they?

Has anyone experienced this before?

Thanks.

You can ask, but honestly unless you have the receipt showing you made a $10 purchase and not a $20 purchase, I don't see that they'll have to do anything. They might be nice and just refund you for the heck of it, or brush you off as a scammer.

    Has anyone experienced this before?

Lol no, I've never gone back the next day to ask for a partial refund from a fast food place.

You make it sound like me wanting to get a refund of $10 is ridiculous?

      Unfortunately I don't have a receipt; seriously, who keeps a receipt of a fast-food $10 purchase?

I do, if I want to do the survey for freebies.

If you used the KFC App, you wouldn't have had a problem. Not only that, you don't wait as long if you pre-pay with your phone.
Not only that, there are some exclusives, and some 'hidden' menu items that are better than what's up on the board.

I place the order at work, then when I get to the car park. I select 'I'm here', and it's nearly ready when I walk inside. Meanwhile there are several people qued up. Only downside is not being able to specify pieces.

If you knew the approximate time, they maybe able to check through the ledger?

        • I usually would use the app, but it was a spontaneous decision to order KFC as I was driving past it lol.

your lucky, i complained when i made an app order, got there 10 mins later only to be told i had to wait 5 mins for the chicken to be cooked up. I questioned what is the point in letting people pre order with the app if they don't start cooking the orders as they're received, they said so the food doesn't go cold by the time the customer gets there rolls eyes thats what the food warmers are for! plus fried stuff stays hot for ages after cooking!

I've had the same thing happen to me.
I got charged $2 extra, but when I was going to ask them about it the next day, they mistakenly gave me an extra burger so it evened out.

What bank do you use? I have Bankwest, and have set up mobile notifications any activity on my account. That way if there is any issue you can deal with it on the spot.

    • -1

it was an ANZ cc. do you reckon I should deal with ANZ directly or try dealing with KFC first?

      • +1

The bank doesn't care unless you've attempted to talk with the store first. They don't have time to sort this out for everyone, they're only interested if you can show that you've tried to resolve it first.

How would a cashier operate this scam? How are they getting into the maccas bank account to take out a couple bucks every time they overcharge someone?

      • +12

It's so easy. I'm surprised you're getting so many upvotes for an unimaginative scam.

        1. Get a job in KFC.

        2. Get an accounting degree and CPA.

        3. Recruit disgruntled store employees, someone from IT, and create a third party provider.

        4. Rig a system to place low amount surcharges.

        5. Accountant adjusts the ledgers to reflect sales amount without the surcharges.

        6. Redirect surcharge amount to third party "provider" as fees for regular services, ie. cleaning.

        7. Set up forwarding account through Cayman islands and launder back to destination of choice.

        Honestly… so easy.

Did it occur to you that some people still pay cash for goods??

        • +2

Did it occur to you that the context of the thread is being overcharged on a credit card transaction, and the post did not mention cash at all??

  • Curious.. How do you think it happened? Is it a single transaction on your statement or two $10 transactions? Did they simply enter $20 into the register (instead of $10) or do did you tap your card twice? (which would require another transaction to be setup at the register)

    • It was a single transaction of $20.

I don't know how it would have happened tbh.

I remember explicitly that the drive through guy said it was $10. The reason I remember is because he didn't mention the price at the intercom once I had ordered, so I made sure he was charging me correctly when I got to the drive through window.

He then said it was $10, took my card, and tapped it.

Happened to my friend, but it wasn't a $10 over charge, it was like supposed to be $15 meal, and they charged him $150 (fat fingering an extra zero).

He came back the next day to the store, and the store owner immediately came out and said "Thank god you're here, I wanna refund you your money, been trying to reach you!".

Mind you this was a small shop, not KFC. Probably only seen a handful of lunches every day.

    • Also probably not a lot of $150 lunches….

But yeah, I considered telling OP that they could go through their own transactions to find his receipt but uh, considering their volume that'd likely be prohibitive.

    • +6

      $150?!

Your friend didn't find it odd when the contactless card payment asked for a PIN?

      • -2

Yes because most people know that contactless purchases above $100 require a PIN. /s

    • So they gave him 10 meals? The amount is usually automatically generated by the POS machine.

He did say it was a small shop, which may not have an integrated POS. The operator would ring up the sale then manually enter in the amount into the EFTPOS terminal. Even larger companies like Umart still do it that way - the amount is manually entered into their Albert EFTPOS terminals.

    • I remember years ago getting a meal and the opposite happened. BAsically it was meant to be something like $8, but they missed a zero on the EFTPOS machine and they charged me $0.80.

These days it's all fed through their computer system, so there's not as much manual input on the EFTPOS.

i got a $7 beer the other day for 0.07

Bargain, I'm surprised there wasn't a thread about this! :)

        • Yes, but what did you get charged for the other 10?

        • Man! Why doesn't that ever happen to me!

I did find a $50 note jammed in an ATM once though.

          • @afah0447:

I did find a $50 note jammed in an ATM once though.

That's even better. He gained $6.93, you gained $50.

  • +1

Dont lie.. you got 2 buckets didnt you!?

  • Well, I paid $10 last time and I got way more than 80 pieces of popcorn chicken. Did you count how many they gave? Maybe they charged you $20 for the 160 pieces you got.

    • Omg - 80 pieces is already way more than enough. I'm not sure I could even eat 160 pieces in a sitting. (Or what condition they'd be in if they tried to cram that much into a single bucket…)

  • Yep, go back if you could be bothered. They should be able to find the transaction in their system if you advise the card number and rough time.

Otherwise, ANZ would probably just credit you $10 as a gesture of goodwill if you ask to dispute it.

  • +4

In other news, the places that take your card and tap and pay themselves are dodgy, you're supposed to be able to see the screen with the value on it to authorise the transaction.

  • What did KFC say when you asked them?

    • +9

KFC advised to post it on Ozbargain for a majority consensus.

    • +1

Kept alluding to finger licking. Fingers now raw.

Now also seeking compensation for raw fingers.

  • -4

Can probably show them the bank statement (in the app is easiest) with the transaction as evidence. This is a valid proof of purchase for returns.

    • +7

It will show that $20 has been paid to KFC.

Will there be any evidence that the $20 isn't the correct price paid?

  • +3

Have had this happen (sort of).
Email KFC tell them approx what time you were there and your cars rego number.
They will look back through the cameras and give you a refund.

Now, what happened to me was I THOUGHT I was over charged. It seemed like way too much for what I got. I didn't know that they now charge an insane amount for their swill. Turns out I was charged correctly. I learnt that people are willing to pay way more than they should be for low quality food.

    • Rofl you raised a complaint without even checking the numbers first?

      Smh

    • +1

people are willing to pay way more than they should be for low quality food.

True. It surprises me that they can sell very low quality food, and small servings, yet at a premium price.
It rarely get fast food from these type of places, when I do it is basically always the specials. At least then they seem 'worth it' . Anything at full price, might as well go elsewhere and get better quality, larger servings, for similar price or even cheaper.

  • Let it go, you will be on a hiding to nothing.

After having KFC twice missing part of my order and not finding out until I got home I find it easier to remember not to support them rather than audit the bag before I leave their outlet. Phoning to report shortage becomes a nasty verbal exchange, just couldn't happen with our systems. Yeah right!

  • Hey, I was overcharged by KFC, why don't I complain about it on OZB instead on contacting them?!

  • I was once shorted one piece of chicken in a 3-piece feed.

I complained on the KFC website and the next day I got a credit for entire meal from Westfield.

Its worth putting in a complaint as they are usually pretty good with dealing with once you go past the local store level.

  • I say just call the actual place you bought it from, explain the issue. I imagine they don't get many people calling about this problem and if you're friendly and genuine, they will be happy to help. Had a similar thing happen at McDonald's a few months back, called them and they took my name and number, and on the way home we swung by to collect the money.

Off topic humble brag - I went to KFC for the 9 pieces $9 deal, and was handed 3x9 boxes of chicken. I said nothing because I am a bad person.

I think that was the last time I ate KFC. There is too much of a good thing, and it results in constipation.

  • I think you can prove the error by taking in the bank transaction and asking them to compare it to the order. They will need the approximate transaction time.

  • Firstly Did you actually get the $10 bucket and not the $20 bucket
Secondly if you kept the receipt then YES.
Its possible they accidentally charged you for 2 of them
Id go and have a chat with the manager.
They will probably give you a free $10 bucket to make up for the error

  • Ask yourself if it's going to be worth that $10 plus this thread you're replying to

    • But it's a life lesson by asking and seeing our responses. drose1 will learn how to handle these kind of situations in the future and so will some others who read this thread who otherwise may not have found themselves in this situation before. A first time for everything / no such thing as a stupid questions.

  • Sue the bastards

    • First day in court with a solicitor and barrister is the best part of $8-10k if you get it on the cheap. Sounds worth it to me. I was quoted $15k for one day and had to accept because it was very short notice. Turned out that didn't include GST, so $16.5k. I got full costs awarded, but the bastard didn't pay. Family.
