Apple MacBook Air 2018 i5 (8th Gen Y), 8GB, 128GB SSD $1,556.10 at Ausluck eBay

110
PUSH10

Seems to be Australian stock mailed from within Aus and comes with a tax invoice.

A $300 discount on a laptop that only became available to buy 10 days ago seems pretty good, makes me regret buying it for 1650 from OW a couple days ago.

128gb is not enough now, especially considering you want to use this laptop for ~5 years.
And then ditching the SD card slot doesn't help it.

128gb is not enough to browse the net on and read emails? I think I've been doing it wrong…

      • +4

but then again why would someone performing basic tasks need a laptop at this price point?

        • +2

Why would they buy an expensive car just to drive the same places a cheap car can drive. Appearance, support, quality, ability.

          • -2

@onlinepred: Apple distinctly lacks support, quality and ability compared to devices at the same price point. But appearance and ecosystem it has in bucketloads.

      • Lol you just summed up Apple users. This is extremely overpriced for a machine to just browse the web and read emails.

        • Sorry, perhaps you can buy a Chromebook if you don't have much money

          • @onlinepred: Or with the same money buy a far more powerful device?

            • @Joey Jo Jo: Putting a V8 in a corolla makes some people happy I guess. Which laptop out of curiosity

              • @onlinepred: While rebadging a Mazda 323 with an apparent fancy logo is enough to place it in the same league as a Ferrari, apparently

It comes with a Y series processor as well. Heavily overpriced for a mediocre laptop

Yes agree 128gb won’t cut it anymore for most people, 256gb should be minimum

    • +2

Nah, there is 3 128gb in my family, wife and 2 kids 128gb is fine.

I agree, got one for my brother recently. As a work machine for students it's perfect. The small amount of storage discourages him from downloading games or movies.

  • Not bad, JB have 10% off but still $1664. I was thinking of a 12.9 iPad pro 64gb at $1529 plus keyboard $200 lol. This for $1556 seems a better buy.

Interesting that my 2012 MBA has a faster processor than this and a larger drive. You'd think that things would improve over six years. The screen would be amazing but it doesn't really inspire me to upgrade. Good price though.

    • Faster have you tested both? You bought a bigger drive can be done now too. Not sure how anyone can look at a old air screen, would be like watching SD tv now lol.

Actually compared to the i7 2012 MBA, the i5 in this one is about 33% faster single core and 20% faster multicore. Compared to the i5 in the 2012 MBA its 50% faster single core and multicore. All this while halving the power required. You can see the cpu benchmarks for all Macbook Air models here https://browser.geekbench.com/macs/437

GPU wise according to reviews the UHD 617 in this one is about 30% better than the HD 6000 in the last gen MBA which is 125% better than your HD 4000, benchmarks at https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-HD-6000-Mobile-v…

Storage wise this does have thunderbolt 3 which would allow for high speed external PCIE storage as well as an external GPU, and according to reviews the battery life is still ~10 hours.

But yeh 2012 MBA is still good enough for daily use but this would be a pretty nice upgrade for you.

I don't know why anyone in their right mind would opt for this over a Surface Pro. You should not leave yourself that trapped in an ecosystem as to pay a $400+ premium for hardware.

    • There’s plenty of reading in the internets and heaps of comments like yours every time an Apple laptop is the deal. I don’t know why anyone would reply to those comments like me right now, oh well.

      • GOT YA! :P

No but seriously, my vain hope is that someone is totally unaware that Surface Pros are a thing, and this helps them pull out of a shame spiral after constantly paying $500 more for their computers and phones.

MacOS has its place in very specific circumstances, which honestly do not apply to the vast majority of people who buy Macs. The worst part is how these users also talk about their purchase as though they've transcended marketing bullshit, when they've paid that premium for 'the experience'.

        • I think people are sick of the problems associated with windows computers. With Mac system everything works, it’s reliable and ad ware and viruses to worry about.

  • It is funny to spend 1.5k+ for a student work laptop. Are you kids using Xcode to build iOS app. If not 500$ windows laptop is good enough.
