If you don't need controller, this is the best bargain atm.

    • Can I use the nexus player remote with this?

      • I just bought yesterday with controller version. No idea How good is the machine yet.

        • +3

          Thanks for the input.

    • How much extra is a controller worth?

      • +1

They go for around the $90 mark last time I looked. So if you need/want the controller it's best to get it packaged for around +$60

  • Could you install Foxtel Go on these?

    • Not yet, they haven't got Android TV version yet.

Fingers crossed we see it in the next few months.

      • Ok, I’m not too familiar with Android TV, but I heard you could just ‘install whatever you like’ with APKs or so, guessing that wouldn’t apply for Foxtel Go? I’m currently using a chromecast to stream to TV via Foxtel Go on my phone, sick of having to use my phone all the time

        • You can install nearly any regular android APK on an android TV device, but often they will only display in portrait orientation… which for a TV means sideways. Plus they will probably expect a touch screen to be available, so you have to plug in a USB mouse to do anything.

      • Is there an iOS version of GO?

    • maybe not Foxtel Go, but you can now sideload Foxtel Now.

  • It's only 7$ more than the last bargain. It's a great deal

    • +1

      Blasphemy!!!

  • Is there a way to play the Chinese Wii games on this yet?

  • Legend, spewing that I missed the one yesterday. I'll get over the $7!

    Thanks!

  • Does it paasthrough Atmos dtsx?

    • and HDR, yes via Kodi

      • Yes via Plex also

  • Can someone who's up to speed with this tell me why I'd go for this over a Roku or a Amazon Fire?

    • and same for Apple TV 4K, just curious. My main objectives are Plex, 4K and Atmos…. does this box handle this?

      • Yeah, like, I can watch 4K plex with a <$100 roku or fire, so I don't really see the point in paying double.

        • what Roku or Fire model would you recommend?

      • Yes it handles all of that, 4K HDR, ATMOS, DTSX - I used this in combination with external hard drive and Kodi for smoother playback.

I tried Plex to watch 4K HDR Atmos, it just not as smooth as using Kodi…forget streaming the 4K media via wifi, its not gonna work.

The reason you should go for this is this box practically plays everything and able to stream games if you have compatible PC or setup.

  • I'm keen to grab one of these for when I move out of home in 6 months (currently have no real use for one) but I'm worried they might become scarce before then if they stop making these.

Anyone have any clue if I'll still have luck picking one up in March next year?

    • +1

I don't think you have to worry about them becoming scarce. Companies will pump out products as long as they're making money.

    • Don't worry abt this running out .. THis product has been in Market since 2015 so you may lucky and get newer version in March in case Nvidia release a new model as this model is from last 2017

      • Except when they released this current version in 2017 it was a backwards step to the original 2015 model. Cost cutting at its best.

  • Can't get it to work with the code

    • Are you using code peppy?

  • +1

Love your gravatar, OP. Miss Roy & HG. :(

  • Is it worth waiting for another deal inc. controller? Not sure if I need it

    • People saying you can use the Xbox One or PS4 controller with it, but I really want to see how good is the Nvidia Shield Controller. It is often reviewed the best controller for game.

  • +1

Oh dear. So cheap i had to buy a third..

  • Looks like code is expired??

    • No. The code works fine.

      • my bad, I was using PUSH10 as the code. thanks

    • Just used it…12:45pm (Adelaide)

  • I've been holding out for a deal like this. Thanks OP.

FYI a cheap Amlogic China box is more capable if the only thing you want to do is play MKV files 1080p/4k. Shield had issues with colour space when switching between HDR and SDR content.

    • -1

The thing about those cheap amlogic S905 boxes is that they all say they can do 4K, but the specs list HDMI 1.4 (not 2.0)… so even if they can decode 4K in realtime they can't output higher than 30fps. Same limitation applies even for 1080p and lower if they upsize instead of dropping the output resolution.

      • My KM8 pro 912 box is HDMI 2.0 and was less than half the price of the shield.

        • -1

I said S905, not S912… the ones that are normally $20 or less and can't even run Netflix due to being pre-rooted.

  • Pulled the trigger. thanks OP

  • Thanks, researched it yesterday and missed out. Not missing out again

  • How good is this as a Plex Media server? Will it struggle with 4k content?

    • Just pulled the plug after doing some research. Thanks OP!

      • how did your research go? i also want to know this like is it easy to set up? what can i use for my plex library since this thing only have 16GB and using this as a plex server, you can ran this 24/7?

      • I meant pulled the trigger, not the plug :-P

I checked the following page: https://support.plex.tv/articles/221099988-setting-up-and-ma…. It seems pretty straight forward. I have a media server at home that I use to store my media so I will be streaming over my home network. I won't use the internal storage for media. 16 GB is nothing.

  • Dammit missed out

  • Too much procrastination and missed out!

  • +1

Holding out for Black Friday / Cyber Monday. Got to be less than $170

    • I wouldn't hold your breath, many people are overhyping black friday to be honest. These shield prices are already heavily discounted.

Most likely will be similar price again on black friday though so I doubt you'll miss out or anything.
