iPad Pro 3 (12.9-Inch) Space Grey 512GB: $90/Month with 3GB Data (24 Month Contract) @ Optus

720

Looks like Optus just updated the iPad Pro (2018) models.

For the maximum benefit on getting the cheapest 12.9” iPad Pro (2018 model) it must be on the 512GB SG model.

https://offer.optus.com.au/shop/tablet/devices/apple-ipad-pr…

$90 plan for 24 months = $2160 compared to Apple Wi-Fi + Cellular $2269 that’s $109 cheaper but included 3GB data per month, Optus Sport, National Geo and Music Stream for 24 months.

If 3GB not enough you can go next tier plan $95 month with 10GB data over 24 months = $2280

Note: 512GB Model only available in Space Grey

It's a great deal if you were going to get the iPad anyway.

  • they confirmed via online chat that no further discount applies (ie the $10 off if you have a mobile service or student 10% off)

    • they never had student discount on Pad/ mobile broadband plans

    • can confirm this, just ended yesterday :( was waiting for a good christmas deal so I hesitate to purchase

      damn

Haha without clicking the link, your "damn" was enough to tell me it was going to be this video. It's so brutal.

        • +1

          omg my ears. iRIP

    • +2

      Bendgate again.

    • +1

      Jerry 😂

    • +1

That was 8 minutes will spent. Cheers!

    • +2

This is quite an exaggeration though… The laws of physics dictate that the larger the area of a rectangle is, the easier it is to bend it.

      • +2

        Which law is that again?

        • Duh! iLaw, of course.

    • Thanks for saving time and making the rejection easier. :)

  • Does it bend

Over $2k and still runs a phone OS on a machine that's trying to replace a computer. Umm ok Apple…

Good luck trying to edit a YouTube video when it just throws you back to the mobile app.

The hardware is great, but at the price point now and the way these machines are marketed, the operating system is severely lacking

    • This. A million times this.

      ARM Macbook Air, WHEN

      • Presumably 2020-20mu21. But I think this is a great machine for some people. It's pretty easy to point at the limitations, but a lot of people don't even come close to those limitations.

        • yeah but those people don't need this hardware either. I'm not complaining since I'm not buying one, it's just funny that the people you're referring to won't even know what they have in their hands.

    • +1

It will never replace a computer. If they do that, their Macbook division will lose sales.

iOS has no accessible file system. It doesn't have enough USB ports, the one port it has cannot support external storage (so no USB drives or external HDDs), no mouse or trackpad support. This makes it unsuitable as a productivity machine. The Word and Excel apps on mobile are limited and don't have all the functions the Windows versions have. And you really don't want to be using a spreadsheet with a touch screen.

It's capable of doing these things, but Apple doesn't allow it because they don't want to cannibalise Macbook sales.

The problem is, it's more expensive than a lot of actual laptops, and since it can't do the job of a laptop, it's a hard sell for just a tablet.

    • +1

Click the Space Grey colour and it's the first option.

      • Still isn't a deal? It's regular pricing? Is it not?

        • It cost you $42.55 for 200 GB of data a month after Ipad 512 GB outright price. Much better than other telco.

          • -1

@ChickenAdobo: Should've said it in the post

          • +2

@ChickenAdobo: I actually calculated it to be lesser than that unless I am mistaken.

Optus is $105/mth for iPad 512GB for 200GB data per month. That's $2,520 over 24 months.

iPad Pro 12.9 512GB with Cellular is $2,269 right now on Apple's website.

So 2520-2269= $251. Over 24 months that's around $10.50 per month for 200GB data per month. It's a great deal unless I'm calculating it wrong.

I cancelled my iPad order and got one through this Optus deal instead. Thanks OP!

            • @ragflan: Your calculation is correct. I used the wrong region and quoted USD prices.

            • @ragflan: You're calculating is correct. But it assumes you buy stuff for Apple's RRP, which to be fair they do a good job ensuring you can't get appreciable discounts.

But occasionally you get an ebay discount and sellers don't pull their listings in time.

  • I cannot see the deal for the 512gb model. Only 256gb showing when I click the above deal.

    • +3

      Space Grey only.

  • +1

This is not a mindbending deal

  • +1

If you're getting this and will travel with it be careful as it snaps and bends quite easily especially if it goes in a backpack and you lean on something. Apparently its all aluminium with no supports

  • Previous Gen is better.. it has a headphone jack

    • +2

Get over it, look how many phones don't have it nowadays, the wireless market will take over all products eventually, and this isnt even new for apple so why are you sour about it. The previous gen was worse than this. The new design is beautiful and really smart

      • +1

I'm fine with no headphone jack. Bluetooth is good enough in most circumstances. The main place it isn't good enough is certain traffic intersections / traffic lights in Sydney, where the lights are obviously keeping in sync using the same frequency and it makes my audio cut/stutter (unless I take the phone from my pocket and hold it closer to the earphones).

        • +1

I’ve had the same issue with my old phone talking to my QC35s but my iPhone is fine. Weird that some intersections do it.

      • Get over it, look how many phones don't have it nowadays

How many tablets don't have it though?

        • How many phones didn't have headphone jacks before the iphone 7. Yes its new and different but its not crazy. It has to start somewhere

          • @Mario1234: So you admitted it hadn't started yet.

I don't compare tablets to phones.

As someone who doesn't use iPhones, this is a big deal.

            • +1

@lostn: The trend of no headphone jacks has started with the iPhone 7. Apple is now integrating this trend into the ipad, it only makes sense that if they are going to remove a component that the rest of their products follow suit.

You're point doesn't make any sense, so what if it hadn't started yet, before the iPhone 7 the removal of headphone jacks hadn't started yet. Every trend starts somewhere

Im not comparing the two, I'm simply arguing that it started with the iPhones, and of course would continue itnto other apple products, as I used the iPhone as an example. They are both apple products you cant simply ignore that and talk about them separately, otherwise the decisions apple makes wouldn't make sense, they have a plan and probably knew they would remove the jack from ipad some time after the 7

              • -3

@Mario1234: So why did they wait a few years before they removed 3.5mm from iPad? Why didn't they do it at the same time if it only makes sense to follow suit? Why do Macbooks still have 3.5mm? It should be removed across the board if it's the future.

                • @lostn: Obviously so that the consumers could adjust to it. The phone was the starting point and the easiest to remove the jack from out of the three.enough reaction to

                  • -1

@Mario1234: What makes the phone the easiest to remove the jack from? If anything, that's the worst place to start.

Laptops and tablets have better speakers and are viable without headphones. People who use their phone as their replacement for the iPod, those people use headphones.

When are they removing it from Macbook?

  • what's the point of 4g and even 5g when all you get is 3GB data?

    • +2

pool your data with other service you may have.

      • Yep, I'm on a 200GB per month plan with Optus for my mobile. I would probably get the cheapest ipad plan and pool the data.

      • The point is for you to run ou'

        and buy mo'

        Every month.

W the other point being Cokptus can double their money while you are boiled alive for 24months

(3GB as they measure it on cellular is <3 hours video)

  • +2

    Good deal.

  • Does anyone know if it is possible to somehow get a TRS benefit from this too? Going o/s soon. Is there a way I can pay Optus and get invoiced for the hardware upfront?

  • This ipad looks very nice but I will never be able to teach my elderly mother how to use one without a home button. The swipe gestures are too nuanced for her, and require a degree of precision I don't think a computer illiterate person will be able to master. The swipes are different if you're used to older hardware and I believe there are at least 3 different swipes.

I'll be able to get used to it eventually, but for me the lack of 3.5mm jack is a deal breaker.

I think Apple considers me done as a customer, since eventually all of their new hardware going forward is sans home-button and it appears sans 3.5mm jack also.

I thought all of that "courage" talk was marketing BS for "we didn't have the space to include a 3.5mm jack on the iPhone" but if they're discontinuing it on iPads as well (there is plenty more space there) then the writing is on the wall. I don't mind if they want to remove 3.5mm since I can just buy other products instead, but the problem is Apple has an unprecedented level of influence on its competitors. When Apple does something, 80% of tech companies always follow. So the notch and removal of 3.5mm is quite prevalent in Android also, and this does directly limit my options even if I choose not to go with Apple. Samsung is the only major holdout, and they could jump in the bandwagon at anytime.

Bluetooth is never going to beat 3.5mm in audio quality. And I don't want to carry dongles that will be easily lost.

    • -1

That's why I'm going to be keeping my ipad pro 10.5 for a long time.

Also spewing about the lack of Apple Pencil 2 support for the old iPads. The old charging method was just terrible..

      • +4

You complain about the old charging method, which yes was shitty, but now you complain that they fixed the hardware issue and so it doesnt work on your old model. You cant have both. If it was a software issue than it would be stupid that they didn't support the new pencil with the old ipad.

        • -2

It is a software issue so that Ur old iPad doesn't sync with the new pencil. The charging method is wireless induction so it wouldn't have been hard to make a separate charger for it e.g. Apple watch.

    • Apple didn't invent the notch, there was two phones that was actually Avaliable for purchase, released only two days apart the essential phone and sharp S2 Aquos. This shows that the notch was a technological innovation available to all manufacturers, and some companies was faster to innovate in providing new features to customers and some are much slower. In additional many companies had a notched phone on the drawing board even before Apple announced thier iPhone.

As for the headphone jack matter cutting corners and cost to reduce useful features, increase end user cost is far from courageous In fact a youtuber showed in was in fact possible to add headphones back into the iPhone existing enclosure. This meant if there was a backlash over their courageous move they could easily release an iPhone with a headjack.

Removal of a headjack is only suitable for flagship devices as only the demographic that is willing to spend as grand to make phones calls would accept paying $30-100 more wireless headphones to enjoy their music.

As a result no more than 10% of the industry are likely to follow this trend.

      • Apple didn't invent the notch

Most of the things Apple does, they didn't invent. But they only get mass copied after Apple does it.

So yes, Sharp did the notch first. But no one was going to copy Sharp's notch because the notch was a good idea. It's not until Apple does it that it is considered a good idea.

I don't think they were even the first to remove the 3.5mm jack. But again, things only get trendy after Apple does it.

As a result no more than 10% of the industry are likely to follow this trend.

I'm not sure about that. Quite a lot of Androids have no headphone jack now. If Apple never removed it, neither would they. Google made fun of Apple during their pixel 1 presentation, but a year later ended up following them in not only removing the jack but adding an unsightly notch also. It doesn't reflect well on their Pixel 1 presentation now does it.

    • I mean, you could get a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter, shouldn't that suffice? Works fine for me and I leave the adapter on the headphones.

      • Believe it or not, USB-C headphone dongles and headphones actually are not standardised and don't work across all devices. Not just the dongles that don't work, but USB C headphones only work on the some devices. If you search you tube for USB C audio, you'll find a bunch of videos of people angry that their Razer dongle only works on Razer phones, their Pixel dongle only works on their Pixel devices, Huawei, etc and so on.

Keeping the adapter on the headphones wouldn't work for me since I use same headphones across multiple devices, which means disconnecting it and eventually losing it.

The existence of these dongles betrays apple's claimed goal of making wired headphones obsolete and discontinued to be replaced with BT. If they really want to usher in the age of BT and permanently get rid of wired headphones from people's homes, they should not allow the use of dongles, otherwise it's no different to just including the 3.5mm jack, since people are going to still be able to use their wired headphones if they were determined to.

        • Apple's standard USB-C to 3.5mm towards the iPad pro 2018 is the topic, not some third-party/cross-device non-standard dongle. So far i've tested my USB-C to USB-C headphones, some misc 3.5mm headsets, and even threw in a USB-C to an external sound card over 3.5mm and they all seem to work.

          https://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/MU7E2FE/A/usb-c-to-35-…

I'm one of those consumers that got rid of their 3.5mm ear/headphones to usher in what you claim to be happening — apple making wired headphones obsolete, so it's not a big deal for me.

          • @lvm: Well if you already deal with USB C audio through other devices, that's an additional dongle, which for me is a deal killer.

I care about audio quality, stability and latency, so wireless is out of the question for me. That means a world of dongles.

I'm one of those consumers that got rid of their 3.5mm ear/headphones to usher in what you claim to be happening

Up above you just said you use a dongle that you leave on your headphones. So which is it? Did you get rid of them or not?

And I'm not the one claiming it, it's Apple.

            • @lostn: I didn’t mean I disposed my 3.5mm equipment — That’s just ridiculous to think that. I just utilize my wireless gear a large majority of the time. To usher in is to allow a transition, right?

Anyway, looks like you have a problem that won’t ever get fixed.

  • I think you could use it as a wireless monitor for the new Apple mini too, more reason to drool over the new iPad Pro

  • sell it and buy macbook pro XD that's what i m thinking to do hehe

  • Are these unlocked so you could use a Telstra SIM with them and put the 3GB data plan in another tablet?

    • yes

    • Great, thanks

  • Just to confirm.

Do we own the iPad out right after the 24 months or do we have to pay something at the end to own it ?

Also if we want to end the contract early. I guess we pretty much pay out the rest of the term and then we own it out right?

    Cheers

    • +1

I am a bit unsure on this too. As an example, the $80 bundle is listed as $65 ipad and $15 plan, but I don't think that actually means you can cancel early and only pay out the remaining $65 per month.

Usually there's some complicated discounting where as long as you keep paying for the plan they are crediting you back something towards the iPad so it's not worth cancelling it early as compared to just paying out the term of the contract.

Certainly you would own the iPad at the end though

    • +1

I'd expect so. I don't know of any plans like this where you wouldn't own it.

    • +1

Of course you own it outright.

  • +1

ordered one. waiting for confirmation. thx.

    • same. let me know when your status changes. mines still on the 1-5 day part.

      • holy cow. finally it arrived this morning………
