Couldn’t find 8g any chance I can send me receipt ;)

Just ask yourself if you'll let yourself have the receipt. No need for public discussion.

Lots of obvious HN store rep posts recently !

This store is currently BANNED from store representative posts.
    Reason: Sockpuppeting

    • No, actually, associated users have been banned since April 2017.

this makes me rather curious how you guys deal with this kind of stuff. I mean its not exactly hard for someone to create a new account here again pretending to not be associated.

        • +1

4 new users have signed up in the last day or so just to post HN deals, suspect IMO…

          • @FLICKIT: We should welcome new users and thank them for posting good deals, not accuse them IMO. Let the moderators do the investigating.

  • +1

Anyone think that jb or microsoft site might do a 20% off deal?

    • +1

Current JB brochure (page 4) shows Surface Go 4GB RAM 64GB SSD as $599 so I would think unlikely they would drop the price so soon. If it is same model as the HN one ($498) sounds like a decent saving hey.

Sorry I should’ve specified that I was referring to the Surface Laptop.

  • +3

Intel 4415Y this cpu, no go.

    need at least i5+8gb ram

    • They actually work really great for the size

    • +2

It benchmarks like a 3GHz Core2 duo desktop, but 1/10 the power or less.
Not stunning but does the job.

      • +2

Benchmarks like a more than a 10 year old chip, nice.

        • +1

That does not mean what it meant ten years ago.

(But wow, it really is ten years.)

  • Anyone have experience with the MS Surface Go?

Only really need the computer for web browsing, travel/movies, docs etc.. I know itd be quick enough based on spec - so just wondering what people think of them day to day? How is the kickstand on your lap etc?

For those things you’d be better off saving a few dollars and getting a regular iPad.

      • Appreciate the response! I probably should've added - it'd be my primary PC - just struggling to see the iPad as a computer replacement given the lack of features in iOS.

      • +1

Argh this response is over-used, an iPad is not always PC replacement.

LTE model not on sale unfortunately

    • +1

I reckon the wifi model is good enough - one can always make use of their mobile phones for hotspotting.

      • +2

You could say that about any wifi tablet.

I prefer built-in cellular because data cards are cheaper, I don't need to set up a hotspot every time I want to browse the web and share my phones data or burn through its battery life. Microsoft has unfortunately been slow to provide this option.

      • +2

I would never go back to a tablet without LTE. Hotspotting every time you want to use my tablet online when out of the house is no where near as convenient, and simultaneously drains the phone battery.

  • The surface pro 6 i5 256gb says 15% off but original price was selling for around $1848 and it's down to $1498, like a 19% off. Cheapest I have ever seen.

  • How much free space do these have out of the box? Windows can be quite hungry for HDD space…

    • Windows 10 with all it's updates will take approximately 20gb. You can expect to have maybe 85gb of usable space on the 128gb version.

I'm tossing up between the cheaper surface model vs the iPad 2018 128gb wi-fi.

Pro's for the surface would be Micro SD slot, usb-c, not needing to deal with Apple's crappy locked down eco-system, cheaper price

Pro's for the iPad would be screen resolution, battery life, speed

Is the day to day web browsing and media experience on the Surface comparable to the iPad? I've always been pretty pleased with iPad's from that angle, and really that's what it will mainly be used for.

    • +3

For those sort of tasks the Surface will not be as good as the iPad, no where near as smooth. Media apps like Netflix, Stan, etc. are better on the iPad too.

The Surface Go base model is too much like poor-performing Windows tablets of old. They get a lot better as you spend more money (and get a decent CPU and non-eMMC storage), but won’t be as maintenance-free as an iPad.

      • +1

Thanks for the reply. For ease of use I guess the iPad still can't be beat in the tablet market.

I'll hold out for a decent iPad deal.

        • +3

Seems odd, but consider going the tablet plan route. For whatever reason, you can often get the tablets for less on a 24mth plan (which include data!) than buying the tablet outright.

More than the regular WiFi tablet, sure, but an option to think about.

@Mitch889: What a strange time we live in! I'll keep an eye out for sure, cheers.

The Ipad is gonna be pretty much a big Iphone. IOS 12 and the file system limits just how unuseful it is.

I bought a surface GO but I understand what its for. Its a great email, workstation PC + tablet. And its light.

I have an ipad PRO which I've really stopped using - the only time I've touched it was to read comics but even then, I hardly touch it. IOS = meh

      • I’m sorry, but that’s such nonsense.

While I would love the iPad to add support for traditional file systems, suggesting it’s nothing more than a big phone is disingenuous.

Same to suggest a small, underpowered tablet like the Surface Go is a “workstation PC”. Aside from the afore mentioned file system support, everything else will be a poorer experience compared to an iPad.

A Surface Pro is a different beast with substantially better performance and a larger display.

I've got an i5 surface and for day-to-day browsing it's junk. Touch screen support and the Chrome browser are poorly implemented in Windows 10. I only use it with a keyboard and mouse. It's an excellent mobile workstation but a crappy tablet.
If you want to browse the web from your sofa or use internet streaming apps the iPad is miles ahead.

Every review i've seen say don't bother with the lower spec'd model due to the slow memory used.

  • Thanks OP! Bought the 128GB online with the Jedi Challenge bonus (worth $199)!
