Ripper deal. Wish it covered April for the F1.

I'd rather pay an extra $30 and book direct with Qantas.

If you have an Amex card, you may have a Qantas spend $350, get $50 back deal.

Times aren't great. The start of Feb is CNY which means half the country virtually shuts down. Ok if you're planning on visting family and friends for a week or two but less interesting if you're a tourists.

    • I would've thought Chinese people go out more during CNY.

All the Chinese restaurants get smashed here in Sydney during CNY

      • Quite the opposite in China haha!

        • haha whys that???

@Homr: The whole purpose of the new year is for families to get together, and hence people will be squeezing themselves onto trains trying to get back to their villages. The fact that the main cities become empty shows the extent of local migration.

Even in Australia, the main purpose is to be with family. So they may go out to restaurants, or they may not have family in the country anyway so they get smashed with others in a similar situation.

@Jenus: ahh thanks, always interesting to learn about other countries culture

It's more about visiting families and friends. Also China has lots of internal migration so a lot of service workers who work in Shanghai are actually from other cities or the countryside so they'll generally all go home over the CNY holiday since it's the largest block of time off on the Chinese public holiday calendar.

So "virtually shuts down" is a bit of an exaggeration but things are less convenient and tend to be more expensive in terms of accommodation and bookings.

$468 booked direct through Qantas. If you have the Amex spend $350 get $50 back, it works out to $418. This is using Melbourne as an example.

I was already on the payment page and came back here for comments. Thanks for reminding me of the AmEx offer. You not only saved me a few bucks but booking from Qantas gives more assurance. Thanks mate!

  • I'd rather pay $550 to get direct flight from BNE to PVG.

    • +1

      where's PVG?

      • +1

PVG is airport code for Shanghai Pudong International Airport

        • cool thanks

      • Somewhere in Shanghai I guess

  • any good local tours recommendation? Preferably some well known/major tour company over there?

    • I've used https://www.jennysshanghaitours.com/, they've got good reviews on TripAdvisor and we were very flexible with everything. Jenny is the owner, who'll arrange your itinerary, guide, etc.

I would recommend taking day trips to see Hangzhou and Suzhou as well.

4 weeks is a long time, you could probably do something like 1 week in Shanghai, 1 week in Beijing, 1 week in Xian and then back to Shanghai to see Hangzhou and Suzhou all via high speed rail.

  • does anyone know if you can pay for Qantas flights, using JetStar vouchers ?

  • Because of CNY, lots are 1 month+ stays haha

  • OP, any sale for Melbourne return from Shanghai? trying to book flights for my in-law early next year.
