Seagate Expansion Portable 1TB Hard Drive $79 @ JB

1040

Cheapest 1TB 2.5" external drive I've seen so far. From page 17 of the JB Hi-Fi printed catalog that was delivered last week, dated 23 March (surprised no one else spotted it already). At first, the price made me think I was looking at a 3.5" model, but the product title, image and code match this:

http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/storage/seagate/expansion…

Unfortunately you don't get USB 3.0 for this price. On the upside, it doesn't have a non-removable VCD like some WD models, so it can be partitioned cleanly.

Apologies for posting this deal at the worst time of day - just before the stores are about to close :D

UPDATE: see JLsBB's post below indicating this is a misprint, and OwneddMuch's post showing a JB receipt that indicates some stores may still sell at this price. Good luck to those who'll be making a late pilgrimage to Officeworks :)

  • Is this a reliable and/or long-lasting brand compared to others?

    • i still have a seagate 500gb harddrive back in '08/09 still works

  • -3

    Correction issued…..fail

    • +1

      obvious correction is obvious

      been said above
You can still pricematch at officeworks

  • -3

MSY selling this drive for $69…. those in Canberra can pick up at Fyshwick store, literally 2min from Officeworks :). http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=2498

    • Sorry dude.. thats the 3.5" desktop version

    • that would be the 3.5" one but photo shows the 2.5"
      cheapest 2.5" is http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=7287

      • +1

Is the 3.5" USB powered or external adapter?

        • external adapter

would need usb and ac power

        • I don't think I have seen any 3.5" usb powered ones
Although new MBP usb ports are providing same amount of power as the wall plug
          So might be releasing soon

    • +1

      righto… sorry about that ;).

    • MSY is selling 3.5" USB Ext HDD(Need AC Power)
OW is selling 2.5" USB Ext HDD(NO AC Power required). And, so far it is the best price in market, no other shop is selling near this price, not even on eBay.

Pricematched at OW, Bondi. Here's the receipt:

    http://i55.tinypic.com/fmjpcy.jpg

Thanks to issh, Jabba & w8e2x. Showed the OW receipt but he insisted on seeing the catalogue. Showed the picture uploaded by Jabba, then he wanted to see the date. Then showed the pic uploaded by issh. Finally he agreed and brought me to the counter =)

  • +1

West Ryde out of stock. Damn.

  • +3

JB stores appear to be pulling these from the shelves and double-stacking the 500Gb units.

Saves saying a printing error - just claim you have no stock!

    JB = scam city.

  • +2

Just purchased 2 HDD from Officeworks at Parramatta for 75$ each, price matched + 5%off. One left in Parramatta. OW at North Ryde will not match price.

  • +2

just went to 2 jb hifis - none on the shelves, all pulled off. they said it was an error in pricing.

i then went to my local officeworks - and they also said it was an error, but they'd check. so they called the nearest jb - but they were too busy to answer. so he called another - who said they'd sold out but the price was $79. he checked the stock and said that the jb in the city had stock. that was enough for officeworks to pricematch (plus 5% off).

thought about buying 10 and ebaying - and then figured it'd probably sell for a $20 profit. too much effort for me to do, so just bought one!

    • +1

so you were going to ozbroden the deal?
      I'll try tommorow..good idea!

  • +2

JB Albert St Brisbane have 5 in stock, only 1 on the shelf hidden behind the 500GB ones. The guy was going to honour the offer but the box looked like it had been opened.

Officeworks on Adelaide St have them in stock and price matched +5% ($75.05) based only on the catalogue (which I got from Albert St JB). They did not call to confirm stock.

  • +1

Just bought 2 off ow @ Brisbane cbd for $150.1. Simply pick up a jb brochure from across the road, go straight in, grab the box, go to the counter, ask for price match. Only took me 10 min. I'll post receipt tonight.

    • Hehe this is what I did. Got OW to pricematch for $75.05 easy times.

  • Tried to pricematch at OW in North Coburg, Vic. They said they couldn't price match due to the fact that it was a pricing error. Even with a copy of the Paramatta receipt and the JB Catalog it didn't work.

    • Heh, wen their this morning and when I didn't see any on shelf, chose not to push it. Although coburg OW did help me back in the days of free logitech.

  • +1

Just picked up one from OW Adelaide St store in Bris thanks to a print out from this page. The guy barely even checked what I showed him and dropped it to $75 without asking either. Nice one!

  • FWIW
I bought WD 1TB elements ext for $77 from office works as long ago week after xmas.

I want 2TB for $90 then I will be happy lol

    • Was that a 2.5" external drive? With no need for power cord?

  • Got one from OW Ringwood after walking to JB nearby for catalog, $75 yay!

Seems to be enough receipts already so meh!

    • Pretty please so we can have a local receipt.

    • Telios how many were left at OW Ringwood? Can you provide a receipt? Thanks

  • Just went into Melb CBD tried with the two JB HIFIS one which still had the 1tb Seagate 2.5" and the other one didn't. So I next went to officeworks in the CBD to pricematch, but they allready knew…So ended up getting the 3.5" version for 65 bucks (MSY pricematch)at Officeworks. The 3.5" thing is ugly and heavy. =( Just hope it fails soon enough, so I can get a 2.5".

    • UPDATE: The hard drive now clicks ALOT when I plug it in (second time plugged in) and starts to click even more even though I'm not even writing anything to the drive (in idle). =S Then soon later starts to rumble and clank internally, sending tremors through my table. This thing is going back tommorow!!! VERY VERY bad product.

      • You used 1 product twice and you say its a VERY VERY bad product.?

        • -2

Yep, one VERY for each time. Only hmm 1 hour use and it was allready malforming. I have a 5 year old Maxtor and that thing still works damm silent, unlike this new seagate drive. As they say, 'they don't make them like they used to'. Going to get a 2.5" definately, one that is not Seagate branded.

  • +2

This is starting to sound like another JB 'pricing error' that is designed to annoy Officeworks or Harvey Norman through price matching.

Good one JB! YOU'VE DONE IT AGAIN!

I really do wonder how JB keep making money when their actual prices are generally crap.

  • just purchased one from officworks, did the price match, then beat, 75.something

    winner

    • What did you provide to them as proof? Did they call up JB? Which OW was this? Thanks

      • Just grab a copy of catalog from ur nearest JB.. they should have bunch of them in their shop.

      • sorry, should have clarified more in my post, thought it was established now, and the deal was on.

mine was from OW in Clayton, I did not have any proof, I walked in about lunchtime, picked up the drive, took it to the counter, and said, "I think I saw this in the JB catalog for 79, can you do a PM/beat"

he check online, on their webise, which gave a price of 129, I didn't even push it, cos I had to get back to uni, and thought I would try again on my way home, but he said he would give them a call, I was tempted to say no, I will come back…

He called them, they quoted him 79, I asked if they could put it aside for me until i was on my way home, no dramas, just went in and picked it up about an hour or two ago. done

        • Wow, the CBD's OW are quite stingy then. Thanks

        • hi could you upload receipt?

          Thanks

        • would a photo suffice?

    • Nice.

To the person who bought it around 3PM today in Preston with a receipt from Sydney….
The cute checkout chick was relieved when I bought in the catalogue, as her cute checkout friend was trying to convince her she had been scammed by you. Still… Preston represent

i really need a receipt to get one tomorrow.

          Thanks

    • Epping line represent yo'

  • bought 1($75.05) at officework, Perth. great deal

    • There's only officeworks in Perth?

      • +1

yeah thats why its officework rather than officeworks

  • +2

I got the last one (well I could not find any more) at JB HiFi DFO Fyshwick today. Needed to show counter staff the price in the catalog to get it for $79 (got catalog from in store racks) and manager needed to come and swipe for it.

    • cool can you upload receipt for OW fyshwick!
The officeworks there is pretty strict about local prices!

  • just opened mine up, its much much bigger than I expected.

maybe all 1tb 2.5 are around this big.. i don't know, but going from the past, I had a 2.5in 40GB, 80GB and 160GB, and each of these were about the same size from one to the other, just varying case sizes.

3.5inch same story, internally they were all the same, slightly different sized cased. i'm pretty sure all 3.5 internal drives are always the same size?

this thing, is probably almost twice the volume of another 2.5inch external I've had…

it's possibly not actually a 2.5 inch laptop hard drive? just a hard drive that is (has platters?) 2.5 inches wide

    • Is it native SATA or USB on the drive itself?

      • I haven't actually opened the case to check.

the only reason I was talking about the drive being bigger, I just assume its bigger inside, because surely they wouldn't make the case 2 or 3 times bigger than the actual hard disk just for asthetics…

        • Yeah surprised me too.

This 2.5" is a fatty, close to twice the thickness of my 320gb WD drive and about half centimeter thicker than my uber Seagate 1.5TB drive.

But it'll just sit near my wii so whatever.

  • I went into a JB HI-FI store today and took 2 of these drives to the counter along with the catalogue, and was referred to the retraction sign displayed on the counter. No deal.
As mentioned, some people have tried getting a price match from Officeworks using the JB catalogue (and the JB guy even mentioned this), but this is not really a genuine deal/bargain, more of a scam of sorts.

I decided not to try Officeworks first, cause i'd rather pay $4 more and force JB to pay for their mistake, rather than officeworks. Considering going to OW for price match now, but i reckon they would call the store to confirm stock and price, so i want to go to OW at 8am, as mentioned, before JB is open.

    • funnily enough, the OW I went to, I didn't have a JB catalogue, so they actually called JB, and were quoted 79… strange… maybe it's ploy to make OW lose money. Send customers there, after they try to buy at JB, then when OW calls, quote them the catalog price.

    • OW are owned by Coles Group, wouldn't be too worried if they lose money off this..

      • +2

Coles group are much better than Harvey Norman in my opinion….

Actually…. I like Coles group, maybe I have been living under a rock, but I'm not sure why some people hate them…

  • +2

    Went to Officeworks Carnegie yesterday.
Picked up harddisk from the shelf.
Went to counter with JB's catalog.
    And paid 75.05.
All above took just 5 mins.
    Great Deal……

    • Indeed. The keys to good social engineering!

      Confident
      Colloquial
      Cheerful

Picked up two from OW on George St opposite to Sydney Uni.

$75 each after price match and 5% discount

    • Could you please upload the receipt Akanian ?
I hit the Petersham OW today and the cute blonde looked up the JB Hi Fi website which quoted $139.
I got rejected twice in one day. I didn't get the hd and i didn't get her number :(

  • fyi - officeworks in richmond (vic) had none on the shelves yesterday, but plenty out the back (which the guy brought to the shelves when i bought mine).

  • So, now in OW system that a price error from JB. It tells staff not 2 price match…
    sleep cost me a find :{

    • I went OW yesterday, there were plenty of stocks sitting there, walked to the counter with one and the guy told me the same thing… price error from JB
      argh

  • Officeworks, Brisbane CBD out of stock it seems

    • +1

officeworks in brisbane CBD had 1 left in stock in the cupboard but the chick at the counter knew about the pricing error

  • +1

Just bought 4 from OW Ringwood. They have 1 on shelf but more out the back. Just showed them JB catalogue and a receipt from one of the ozbargain user receipts from jb. Will post receipt when I get home.

    • So no reddish error message saying 'Do not pricematch to JB'?

      • Nope the attendant just said okay we'll beat it and I asked if there was more stock out the back he said he had boxes of them but just has one on display. He just told the check out chick to price match guarantee it. I left OW about 30 mins ago.

        • Wow I've been having such bad luck with this deal so far. Tried Nunawading OW, which came up with red message. Thnx

        • Could I please have a copy of the reciept? Thanks

        • Lol, I went there and he guy said he got a call from head office OW, and told them of JB's 'printing error'. So, I ended up getting the 500Gb version of the 2.5" for 56 bucks. XD

I got 2 for $79 each at a NSW north shore DSE location (withheld publicly since they were incredbly good sports and i dont want them to get in trouble for the price match.) If anyone is interested, PM me and ill scan the recipt with the location). Surprised no one tried DSE yet :o. Could of been pedantic and asked for the 10% difference gurantee but they were already selling at a loss and i didnt wanna be an asshole ^.^

    • Chatswood chase?

      • Right on :)

  • +3

I just got mine from OW woolloongabba QLD for $75.05 each, just showed them JB's catalog no problem.. receipt is here http://i54.tinypic.com/2ykyvyh.jpg

  • DSE, Queen St Brisbane - they wouldn't price-match, claimed JB were sold out across the CBD. But success! OW, Windsor QLD had plenty of stock - it came up "red-flagged" but the nice girl checked with a manager and was approved.

  • picked up three of these at OW in Brisvegas CBD - showed'em the picture of the catalogue scan above, they knew all about it. $75.05, very good of them… I always prefer to buy from them in case of problems, have bought two dozen HDD's from them over the years.

  • just going thru my junk mail out of letterbox …BIG W catalogue starting today ,pg 9 seagate expansion 2tb and 1tb external hds "one low price" $118.00 . Now get excited!

    • +1

OW is currently selling the 1tb Seagate 2.5" Portable Hard drive for 117 bucks. So that might be a better deal than Big W's.

    • The 2tb Seagate expansion is 3.5".

  • +3

Price matched at DSE Belconnen - $79!

    • I also got one price matched at Dick Smith. :)
Tried Office Works Oxley, Brisbane, but they had a memo about the pricing error. Tried another JB store, no good.

Only problem is, the drive wont work!
I first tried plugging it in to my Nokia N8, and it didn't work, i thought this was because the N8 didn't provide enough power for the usb drive to run. So then i plugged it into my PVR usb port, didn't work. Then tried my laptop, then my desktop, would not recognise it. The light would turn on, and the drive would spin, but no recognition on the PC's. Went into Control Panel, then Computer Management, to view the hard drives, and it does not appear. :(

Is it a dud, or did something go wrong cause i plugged it in to my phone first? Wouldn't think that could do anything.

      • Problem has resolved itself. I tried plugging it back in to my N8, a couple of times, including once using a dual usb cable to plug one plug into a usb power supply, and the other into the phone. It didn't work.

But then i tried once more with my desktop, and to my surprise it worked. Has the seagate bloatware on it still. Have copied files on to it. Have played back a video file on it, and viewed photos.

So i think it's all good now. Just needed to be re-jigged maybe.

    • :( :(

DSE wouldn't price match using excuses that JB does not have em in stock.

I will try my luck at another store later. Anyone care to share a DSE receipt?

  • Has anyone opened it up yet to see what sort of drive is inside?

  • Well, I opened mine. There are two screws under the front feet. I slid a guitar pick and an iPod opening tool around the case to pop it off. Managed to break a clip on the inside but it should go back together fine.

P/N on the external drive is PSD2A6-500. The internal hard drive is a Seagate FreePlay SATA ST1000LM010. The USB is not soldered to the drive. Drive itself is quite thick at 15mm so it won't fit in your standard laptop enclosure.

  • Dick Smith DFO played me off telling me they called Jb hifi and the guy told them that this was the not plug and play but required power cable and plugged into the socket.
Why do I think they are lying even though title and photo explicitly states the portable version?(rhetorical)

How can I get them to tell me at least acknowledge this price

  • OW westgate, quoted the JB price mistake and were not able to price match/beat. Guy there was at least VERY polite about it though. Any VIC. receipts anyone can post?
