Seagate Expansion Portable 1TB Hard Drive $79 @ JB

1040

Cheapest 1TB 2.5" external drive I've seen so far. From page 17 of the JB Hi-Fi printed catalog that was delivered last week, dated 23 March (surprised no one else spotted it already). At first, the price made me think I was looking at a 3.5" model, but the product title, image and code match this:

Unfortunately you don't get USB 3.0 for this price. On the upside, it doesn't have a non-removable VCD like some WD models, so it can be partitioned cleanly.

Apologies for posting this deal at the worst time of day - just before the stores are about to close :D

UPDATE: see JLsBB's post below indicating this is a misprint, and OwneddMuch's post showing a JB receipt that indicates some stores may still sell at this price. Good luck to those who'll be making a late pilgrimage to Officeworks :)

Cheers Ashlea, always helpful! Cute photo by the way (I hope that didn't sound creepy!).

i dropped into jb hifi at kedron to pick up one of these this arvo.. to my surprise they had about 8 or so left on the shelf and they were being sold for $79.

i asked and the sales person reassured me they were usb bus powered. just got it home and it's not. it looks to be a 3.5" drive and requires mains power. sucky. going to take it back on monday.

    • I too was disappointed it's not usb powered. Although, I didn't think usb powered existed in our Aussie market with 1TB. Also wondered the worth of picking up a 2.0 usb instead of 3.0
Got one anyway because I couldn't be bothered testing a usb 3 on the stb I have, then exchanging if it didn't work. Probably pay for it down the line when i find I have to have a usb 3 if I want to plug it into whatever laptop, desktop etc I have in future.

    • wow never heard of a 2.5" drive with ac power needed

it looks to be a 3.5" drive
salesperson may have gave you wrong one(possible)

      • agree this is possible
but the 1tb drive i have got is absolutely identical to the one shown in the ad
even the product name on the box is identical
i will see how i go returning it tomorrow

It definitely is a 2.5" USB-powered drive. You sure they sold you the right model? If there's an AC adapter in the pack, then it's not the right one.

When I was at our local JB last week, they magically claim that all their 2.5" 1TB stock had vanished (there were a shelf-full of them just 2 days before), but had plenty of the 3.5" version for anyone who wanted the deal. Yeh right… 8-)

  • I bought the 2TB version from OW - $117 shelf price. They had the JB catalogue pinned up at the front and had stock but decided to go for the 2TB.

      i'm assuming that's 3.5"

  • Went to Robina thnat had conveniently had no 1TB 2.5 but instead had the 1TB 3.5 in it place recently marked down to $79 DODGY!!!!

    • Actually the item on sale was meant to be the 3.5" 1TB HD, except that someone added the word 'portable' to their catalogue by accident.

Nothing gets past Ozbargain though :)
