500GB Samsung 7200RPM USB 3.0 2.5" Drive. $58.91 at ARC

490

I got one two weeks ago, it's great. You can't get 500GB 2.5in drives much cheaper elsewhere, let alone USB 3.0. The second cheapest USB 3.0 500GB drive is $75, and so this deal is pretty strong.

  • Shipping costs and reliability of ARC?
Seen it a few times on SI but never used them

    • I've bought countless hard disk from their shopfront in Chatswood and no problem.
Not sure about online purchase though, you would think, the service would be similar. :)

      • +1

Online purchases that result in delivery are dealt with fairly professionally. Well that was the impression I got from the week I had work experience at their Silverwater branch.

They use Courier Please and Toll.
For small items they package the items into a box and use airbags as padding. For large bulky items such as Z5500s they just stuck a piece of paper on the box and sent it on it's merry way.
I delt with a dispatch from order to pick up from the courier. The process up to calling in the courier for pick up was done within an hour of confirming payment, then the items were shipped out that arvo once the courier came.

    • I would put ARC's service and RMA at number 1 over any other computer store…. they have been around since the start one of the oldest PC resellers around and there's a good reason how they stayed in business all these years and it comes down to good prices and great service. :)

  • How do you know its 7200rpm?

EDIT: oh its in the fine print at the bottom…

Samsung S2 portable external hdd enclosure comes in 2.5-inch design with 7200 RPM HDDs and has Dynamic Balancing to make the drives operate more silence.

  • will this work on usb2.00?

    • +2

Yeah, USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 ports, just that it'll only have USB 2.0 speeds.

    • +3

Of course… Just the extra speed won't be reflected on a USB 2.0 port

  • +1

thats a very good price for a 7200 2.5 but has anyone had experience good or bad with the samsung drives?? i find their electronics are mixed some great some crap

    • +1

Same with WD. Prefer seagate in the jbhifi deal.

      • Not technically valid, i went into a JB HI-FI store today and took 2 of these drives to the counter along with the catalogue, and was referred to the retraction sign displayed on the counter. No deal.
As mentioned, some people have tried getting a price match from Officeworks using the JB catalogue (and the JB guy even mentioned this), but this is not really a genuine deal/bargain, more of a scam of sorts.

This deal is very good, it's only the 500gb, but it's 7200rpm, USB 3.0, is cheaper than the $79 seagate, and is legitimate.
These are attractive external drives too.

  • I've purchased stuff for my office from the ARC Liverpool retail store before. Can verify to their authencity and helpfulness.

    • Same with the store in Chatswood. Although it was hard for them to understand me on the phone due to language barrier

  • A surcharge for using Paypal, doesn't that violate the Paypal terms of use?

    • What would you rather have.
An increase of 3% across the board or a lower price and a 3% increase only if you choose to pay by paypal?

This is one aspect of the PayPal T&C's that I find redundant, I think it was put there to stop ebay seller from charging the buyers the paypal fees they receive after the final auction price is determined.

      • Yeah, but PayPal only charge a maximum of 2.5% not 3% to the seller. Fair enough charging a surcharge if they are up front about it, but if they wish to use and have the convenience of offering PayPal then they should at least abide by their terms and conditions—otherwise don't offer it, pretty simple.

    • Yes it does violate it and should not be happening.

    • +1

Sure it does, but (and I may be wrong) I think MasterCard and/or VISA also prohibit surcharges under their T&Cs.

I prefer having the surcharges disclosed to me as such, as it's obvious that the no-surcharge rules are just so people don't hesitate to use cards/PayPal as the cost to them is the same regardless of payment method. Little do they know that they could have paid less had the prices not been inflated to account for merchant card/PayPal fees.

EDIT: Looks like I am wrong!

      http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/322972

The Reserve Bank got rid of the 'no surcharge' rule for exactly the reasons I stated above. So PayPal is actually the odd one out here.

    Great deal.

    fine print:
    3% surcharge for paypal
Estimated Delivery charge to 2216: +10.94

their order page is stuck on postcode 2216, but the shipping seems reasonable.

I'm hanging out for at least 1TB, especially since Ive got no machines with usb3 ports yet.

  • can you purchase this instore?

    • Call them. They don't stock a lot in the store in chatswood

      • Most of the stock is held at the Silverwater Branch and distributed to the others by a van daily XD

  • what are read/write speeds, OP?

  • Hmm would anyone know if you can take out this external hard drive, put it into a PS3 as a 2.5" internal, and put the one that was in the PS3 back into the external case?

In fact, can you do that with most cases? I want to buy an external portable 2.5" for this reason.

    • I was about to post a long reply saying something like "why the hell would you want to go to all that trouble blah blah". Then I did a quick google and found this:
      http://www.cnet.com.au/how-to-upgrade-your-playstation-3-har…
How easy is that! I'm impressed - I wish the 360 was the same.

      • Yea I'm not so worried about installing it into the PS3. I'm worried about taking it out and putting the PS3 one back into this!

    • I haven't seen the inside of these new Samsung drives, but I remember reading last year that the usb 2.0 S2 drives had a USB controller that was built into the drive, ie it doesn't have a standard SATA connection.

Can't speak for these newer drives though.

      • Hmm alright, thanks for that. I will keep that in mind. I probably won't get this one then.

  • I wonder how long until we see thunderbolt controlled drives?

    http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/02/thunderbolt-smokes…

    • Makes little/no sense on a HDD atm, as there will be no speed increase over USB3 and currently you can only use it with a latest model MBP ie no backwards compatibility with all other PCs/MACs with USB ports.

      • daisy chain is the only advantage I see
helps those with limited ports, ie 6 ports in one

  • i had a 3.0 drive and it would not pick up on ANYTHING until i converted it to FAT32, fyi

  • +2

    price showing as $80.85 now??

  • MOD/OP, please expire this deal in the title.

    • yep mod will notice soon

  • i ordered hdd before 10+ votes, and they told me no stock till 20 APR!

    ARC===SPAM!!!

  • got a call from these guys last friday 8th of April 2011 saying

    1. item is out of stock
    2. dont know when it will be in may be a long wait.
