  • How does this compare to the Sony unit (ax100) that is a big favourite on here.

I have had a JVC unit in the past and was very happy with it

    • +1

It's probably closer to the newer Sony unit (AX3000), which is similar to the AX100 but with a larger screen and fewer physical controls. Both the AX100, AX3000 and this JVC unit have resistive screens.

I ordered the AX3000 during the last round of ebay sales (~$420 after discounts). I chose this simply because I like Sony's interfaces better, but this unit was the runner up because it has very similar features.

      • I weighed up between the AX3000 and thid and ended up with this.

This has steering wheel controls out of the box (the adapter wire is includex whereas it isnt with the Sony).

I couldn't find anywhere online to buy the Sony wire either.

          • @bogak: Yep. Didnt want to pay another $150 to aerpro for the kit.

The manual for the Sony mentions a harness (same as the JVC one where you connect 3 wires) but couldn't find it anywhere online.

            • @ol mate: hmm don't know about $150. I bought the 2 Kenwood ones for $19 each. Normally any of those Sony ones would have the steering wheel connectors, though i can't tell if its 3 wire. I normally walk into Supercheap and ask to see them.
But anyway i wouldn't use the stock harness it comes with since the Aerpro ones are heaps easier to plug in and the wires are thicker.

              • @bogak: Yeah the kit for my car with the steering wheel harness was $16.50 for the Aerpro kit.

You just go to the aerpro site, enter your car model and head unit model, and hit go. There is a more expensive generic kit (around $90) that has everything for every possible combination (including single DIN installs) - it's a big waste of money, just buy the stuff you need.

              • @bogak: I think we are referring to different things @bogak and @Spam Service.

Youre both referring to the normal "car to iso" and "iso to kenwood" adapters. Those are fairly standard and cheap and i would recommend using those to connect it (otherwise youre cutting stock wires)

                Im referring to this: http://www.kenwood.com/au/car/visual_navigation/oem/

The iso to Kenwood adapter has the 3 wires to connect to the kenwood plug, and the Sony also has reference to a plug as well but doesnt include it.

                Edit: Sony link https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/support/articles/0016868…

Following the Aerpro guide, they want you to buy this adapter and harness: https://aerpro.com/chnixa which is $100-150.

                • @ol mate: Your right that you will need those things, but the steering wheel adapter is car specific - that will definitely not come with the JVC head unit or any other head unit for that matter.

What you're referring to is what aerpro calls the patch lead, the lead that attaches from the head unit to the steering wheel adapter. For me, the harness with the patch lead was $16.50. The JVC unit may come with the patch lead, but the steering wheel adapter will still be required.

                  • @Spam Service: I didnt need one for my car - the aerpro iso to Kenwood already had 3 bare wires which connected directly to the jvc patch lead. Nothing else needed.

                    • @ol mate: Interesting - I haven't installed mine yet. The aerpro site sad it needed the steering wheel adapter, for both the JVC and the Sony unit - I'll see if it's needed when the time comes.

  • Well the pre-outs on this JVC is 4.0V / 10k ohms which is a plus. I don't see what the Sony one does but i can say this JVC is not bad though i'm not a fan of resistive touch screens

    Advanced Bluetooth Ver 3.0

Not really advanced anymore and might give a crackling audio experience with newer phones. I believe this is the issue I am experiencing on my LG G6, mother's S8 with older BT devices.

    • Yeah I saw that and thought it wouldn't be something you would want known. Seems odd tho, considering the design cannot be that old. Maybe they got some old chips for a bargain price, and makes you wonder what else they saved manufacturing costs on. But hey it is a pretty premium price for what is does, so maybe they are not ripping you off and you get a little quality. Who knows?

    • No point going above 3.0 for these, they are hooked up to the car battery absolutely no benefit saving the tiny wattage BT 4.0 brings. Your issues are down to either your phones, headunit or severe CBD wireless congestion.

      • I can't find a solution and nobody seems to know what I am on about. Happens with 3 separate devices on two separate phones.

    • After looking at some videos, the unit appears to be a cheapo generic Chinese unit, so I would imagine lots of issues and very poor value here.

      • +1

JVC definitely ain't what they used to be

      • I installed this JVC unit in my car.
        Its great.
        No issues.

        • I had a mate helped me put this one, also bought a harness and facia kit from aerpro for around $250. I don't know what we've done wrong but I can't seem to get the steering wheel control working on my Honda CR-V 2008. Also the reversing camera doesn't activate when in reverse gear? And can't seem to get Android auto on it.

  • Hey rep,

"Android Playback Via USB - Plug n Play"

Does that mean this unit has Android actually built into the unit(separate to the Android Auto terminal function)? What version? Is it rooted? Is the Play Store available? How hard is it to change the launcher? If not, how does that claim make any sense?

    • it means you can stream music via USB from your phone, most of the time you need whatever app it wants you to install, in this case probably some JVC Music app player, connect your phone to the HU via USB, run app, play music, sound comes out.

      • So if your phone does not support USB OTG, the headunit feature disappears? How is this a feature of the headunit? Can't this headunit even play from media standalone? Surely it can manage that? Considering the premium pricing and terrible budget interface you would hope to find a little value?

        • You can also stick a USB drive into it with music files in it. Don't get too upset about the tech, all brand name head units are 10 years behind and charge you heaps for it. Only other option is to get those Octacore Android HU with Oreo and do some custom work on it.

    • It means it has android auto - you can screen mirror and use your phone with the head unit's interface. So android is not built into the unit, but you can use the apps on your phone on the head unit a if they were installed natively.

"K2 is a JVC's original technology that reproduces the original master sound by expanding the bit rate and frequency range."
Cool, it can do "magic" as well.

  • +1

I'd go the Sony AX100/200/205 over this one. The Sony units look a lot more 'factory' and the skip and volume wheel make it much easier to control without taking your eyes off the road.

  • Rep- do you have a DVD version of this or something similar for a similar price? Probably not necessary I know these days, but thought I'd ask.

Also how does it go with two phones? When my wife and I swap cars one headunit seems to try the last paired phone first and then try the other automatically whereas the other unit we need to manually reconnect with our handsets when we swap otherwise it's locked onto the other person's handset.

  • Will this fit a in a 2018 Nissan navara d23 st-x?
