  • Just received mine today, can't wait to open it and put it to test.

    • +1

I'd love to hear positives/negatives before pulling the trigger! There's a distinct lack of reviews due to it being a new model.

      • +3

From all the reviews I've read the battery life isn't the best, nor it has touchscreen which doesn't bother me at all.

Other than that the price is hard to beat for what you get…

      • +1

I recommend you go to any JB Hi-Fi and play with their display models. Inspirons are mediocre.

But I am biased as a long term Dell user, in my opinion it's either Latitude or go home.

        • Mediocre in what way? Build quality?

Let me ask you this - how much is an equivalent Latitude cost? Care to link me?

          • +3

@mg_k: Yes build quality. Dell likes to put big specs on Inspirons but skimp out on everything else that makes a laptop great to use. Keyboards and touchpads are generally pretty poor, and low battery capacity too.

I've played with this specific one at JB and can honestly say the aluminium frame is built decently but is so thin that the machine flexes anyway. The keyboard is a shocker imo!

Latitudes are not in the same price league but I found a good deal on Dell's outlet: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/420397

            • @Junk Sifter: That's not a bad price. Thanks for linking.

              • +2

@mg_k: I'd spend a bit extra on an XPS in all honesty. Nothing comes close in terms of user experience apart from Apple products. But I hear Dell is releasing new architecture soon

                • @[Deactivated]: The Inspiron has different series. 3000, 5000 and 7000. The build quality varies across them and it all depends upon how much money you pay for these. 7000 is offcourse the best build quality and feels like a premium machine. The ones in JB are the low end 3000/5000 ones from my experience.

                  • @bunnikins: Okay.I still think the XPS is worth the extra $$

                    • +1

@[Deactivated]: Aren't XPS usually like double the cost of similar specced Inspiron?

I didn't like the laptop at all. I had ordered one during the sale and returning it now. Fan makes so much noise on a brand new laptop.

Please have a look at below links before purchasing

        • I'm finding the fan noisy and the track pad and keyboard a bit flimsy too. Was the returns process very painful? I was working away for a few weeks so I only just got to use it, despite it being delivered a week ago.

    • How long did it take to arrive?

      • Ordered on the 11th, arrived today.

        • Lucky you. I ordered my laptop on the 4th and it only just arrived in Australia today.

    (non-touch)

    deal breaker.

    • +13

I personally prefer to use my laptop as a laptop, not get fingerprints all over the screen etc.
      Each to their own, though.

      • +2

That's because you've probably never used one with both.

If you haven't, you'll never go back.

If you have, what is wrong with you? Would you like you phone with push buttons too?

        • +3

I have a Lenovo 900, but Windows 10 isn't really optimised for touch too well on a desktop experience (apart from the metro apps which I only use very rarely).

It's also more awkward to reach over the keyboard to interact rather than using the touchpad I find.

        • +3

I've got one, and I slap the hand of anyone who touches the screen.

Phone is completely different, most targets are within the reach of my thumb. Keyboard shortcuts trump whole arm movements.

      • Wouldnt buy a laptop these days with no touch screen. Sooo handy

  • Graphic card is …

A Graphics Card is a piece of computer hardware that produces the image you see on a monitor.

*Intel® UHD Graphics 620 with shared graphics memory

  • -2

    rubbish graphics are a dealbreaker,

    • +2

You'd have to be bonkers trying to game on a 13" screen anyway. GFX cards are often sacrificed in this size for portability, 15 inch with GFX: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/415708

    • +1

Depends on what you want to do with it.

It's clearly not a gaming laptop. I'm using it for photo editing (Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop) on the go which imo is perfect.

Care to show me one which has similar specs, size, weight and price but with good graphics?

I'm waiting. More than happy to refund mine if such device exist.

      • I'd use it for video editing and prefer the laptop that iMagoo links one post earlier. You sacrifice 8GB of ram but get CUDA acceleration in Adobe CS.

Like you said, depends what you want to do with it. But you don't need an i7 for just Photoshop and Lightroom.

  • +2

Anyone know the battery life of these?

    • Pretty bad reviews on internet

      • +1

What reviews? Every review I can find is for the older 7370, not the newer 7380. Even the Dell site has 0 reviews for it (vs. 1240 reviews for the 7370).

    • Reviews of recent Inspiron 13 inch 7000s rate them sub-par for it's class generally.

I just bought something similar from the Dell Outlet store, but also bought a powerbank to help it get through the school day. Not received or tested yet, though

  • +1

The battery in the new version is the same 38 Whr as the older one, so it's fair to say has the same limitations. Otherwise the specs, for the money, look great.

  • So what's the general Go-to these days for a great 13" under $2k? Something like an HP Envy?

  • +2

I bought this for work last year. The heat design is so bad. That limits the i7 performance! It runs significantly hotter and slower than my i5 8250u home laptop which is US$500 (f510ua) as tested by a game (blade and soul) . DO NOT BUY this laptop before doing research!

  • +2

I bought this model a while back when they had a similar sale. It looks very good on paper but the laptop build itself is mediocre and personally I couldn't get over the problems that annoyed me so I returned it. Battery life is around 5 hours, fans are very loud and gets hot quickly, track pad was poor even for a windows. However keyboard and screen are both quite good. If you don't care about battery life and fans, I think it's a good option. Also recommend seeing in store first before purchasing

  • Dell… is a dealbreaker

    • Used a lot of latitudes have you? Or is your broad personal opinion based off 2010 Inspirons?
There is more quality difference between manufacturer's equivalent lines than between manufacturers…

  • Beware the black screen of death. External monitor will work though…

  • Does it give you headaches, like the photo on the notebook display?

  • I got mine delivered just now and the fan hasn't stopped since I started my laptop. I mean there is no applciation running as its a brand new laptop but the fan doesnt stop.
Is that how its always going to be? if so i am definitely returning it back. I bought it using Dell Australia Website? Can i return it back with no returning charges incurred and will i get a full refund back?

Apart from fan speed, the rest looks fine, i mean the build quality looks fine, the keyboard obviously is not as good as on my current Dell latitude but then you get what you pay for.

Overall i would have been happy with this laptop except for that annoying fan noise thats too much to handle.

    • +3

The fan has stopped spinning since I wrote this review :), not sure the Dell guys working on my laptop remotely.
Anyways will continue to monitor my laptop for 2 to 3 days and provide feedback. I spoke to Dell guys and they have agreed for a full refund if I return within 15 days of invoice date and the invoice date is 26-Nov although I received my laptop today.

Apart from the fan noise that annoyed me initially, the rest looks good. Ofcourse the keyboard and the overall build is not top notch but its satisfactory. The track pad is like any other trackpad and I find no issue with it, its as good as its on my Dell Latitude.

The speed to launch applications like Eclipse, Spring tool Suite which I use for programming is very good and I am thoroughly happy with it.

I might keep it if the fan stays off for most of the day, I can bear it provided it only gets noisy in some intervals, going to be using it all day today, wait for further feedback tomorrow

  • I havnt had an issues with my Inspiron 13 7000 and have owned it for a year and half, mine is an i3 however. Bought it when this deal was posted https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/237936.

  • On a slightly unrelated note does anyone know if there is something equivalent to the old:

Dell Inspiron 11 3000 Laptop (Pentium N3710 Quad-Core + 128GB SSD) deals that used to pop up a lot last year such as this:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/324047

All the current models seem to have emmc storage rather than ssd:

    http://www.ebaystores.com.au/Official-Dell-Australia-Store/_…

and I don't really see people posting deals for these new models on OzB

    • Most budget Atom based machines are going to use eMMC, that's a huge cost saving item to get the price down. After that you will get a cheap screen and usually little ram.
Some eMMC has got better and really cheap SSDs are getting worse, so the gap isn't as wide as it was.
Just save a little more money and get yourself a 2nd hand real laptop, that's where the value/performance is…

      • Needs to be new.

Don't need performance it's for a kid to do web browsing, office etc.

Especially as in a couple of years may need to buy apple depending on school choice.

Don't think eMMC is that great even now.

Was just hoping for something like last years Inspiron 11 3000 with the ssd.

Else might just get something like what they sell at Aldi especially on clearance.

        Thanks anyway.

Brother received his today and was initially very happy.

Very quick, but the fan noise is super loud and annoying. He is going for a refund.

My Dell precision pro at work does the same thing.

    • Ahh.. i think someone above has the same issue as well.

      • Yeah, I have requested for a return too.
