Is Whirlpool The Worst Australian Based Forums? [Community Answer: No]

Whirlpool has to be the worst forums I've encountered in over 20+ years online.

Moderators aren't educated enough to participate in serious discussions so everything gets labeled as a personal attack or trolling. They have a serious problem with moderators being overly aggressive in trying to censor reasonable posts just because it contains an opinion that they don't like.

Seems the website has been overly moderated for many years and a quick search shows multiple accounts from other users reinforcing that view. Having been lurking a lot of Ozbargain's threads for a while it seems they're atleast open to discussion and aren't as quick to label everything as hateful or trolling which gives some hope for an online community that isn't being run by fascists trying to censor everything they don't understand.

I have added a poll if you wish to share your opinion without leaving a post.

If you disagree with the thread I'd like to know why so feel free to leave a response detailing why you disagree.

    Welcome to OzBargain.

  • +10

Maybe they just don’t like KFC ?

  • +18

    Great first post.

Please realise we have bargain and competition posts, not just a forum section in which to create pointless, childish posts such as these.

      • +17

Comments yes, if you'd like to look at my posts, you'll see I've posted 1852 of them, with the vast majority being deal posts and competitions, not whinging forum posts.

But well done, trying to attack the members that keep this site running.

I see great things for you around here 😂

          • +6

@KFC Fan: Perhaps when you actually contribute something to the community you can critique others post histories.

            • -2

@dylo: Since when was experience a prerequisite for criticizing anything? I've actually submitted a few deals through the anonymous email they provide before I decided to make an account to post on the forums. Now weather they were posted or not I never bothered to follow up but that doesn't mean someone didn't contribute.

I'd say you'd have plenty of things you criticize especially politically without having any knowledge or experience in the field whatsoever.

          • +2

            @KFC Fan:

when your history is full of them is all.

Oh my bad, I thought you just checked the first page of my comments, didn't realise you went through all 21,000+ and deduced your reply from there.

            the same comment

Oh, if you were even on my league this post would be so much more fun. Alas, you just can't back it up and instead I'm going to have to go elsewhere to get any sort of educated battle, since I've stooped as far as I possibly can to get to your level, but I can't quite get that low.

      • +4

That is not the post history - This is

        Apology accepted.

        • -6

          No response? Thought as much.

          "Apology accepted"

          • +5

            @KFC Fan:

            Thought as much.

You sound like a typical Whirlpool poster, so no surprise your account was canned leaving you with nothing to do on Friday nights.

Where are you headed to next?

            • -2

@D C: Did you read the entire thread or were you unable to hold more than three words in your memory?

That's about as far as I'm going to bother engaging someone like you because your intentions are clear from the get-go.

              • +1

                @KFC Fan:

because your intentions are clear from the get-go.

Not as transparent as yours though.

I guess the pot calls the kettle clear these days.

                • @D C: Almost like I created the thread and made it perfectly clear what my intentions and opinions were in my first post, meanwhile all you did was post snarky comments about a user and not actually contribute to the titled discussion.

                  • @KFC Fan:

meanwhile all you did was post snarky comments about a user

…who just signed up to post a troll thread.

Ok, according to Betteridge the answer is "No". Happy?

  • +14

What did Whirlpool say when you asked them?

  • +1

I'm surprised it gets panned so much, I haven't been on there much but I never found it that bad. In saying that though, your comparison of OzBargain forums to Whirlpool is interesting. I'm increasingly feeling people are bailing from Whirlpool forums to OzBargain, not just people thats been there for a while but new people are coming here instead.

I know this is a bargain site in essence but I kind of wonder whether the forums are increasingly becoming more of an "Australian forum" above bargains.

    • +2

I probably go to new discussions page as much as the new deals page.

      • +1

I go to new discussions about 90% and new deals about 10%

  • +1

They have a serious problem with moderators being overly aggressive in trying to censor reasonable posts just because it contains an opinion that they don't like.

I do agree with this assessment. Moderators can be extremely overzealous and the level of censorship can be insane. Especially if you dare to mention changing a light fitting or running an ethernet cable. And despite being a 'tech' forum there is a real absence of technical knowledge.

With that being said it is a good place to get informed on popular technology and networking/internet developments.

    • What's wrong with mentioning changing a light fitting or running an ethernet cable?

I post there every now and then but never got censored for asking about ethernet cable…

      • +1

What's wrong with mentioning changing a light fitting or running an ethernet cable?

Electrical work brings out the safety Nazis. "It's illegal to do your own electrical work blah blah". Mind you a lot of forums are like that.

Ethernet runs usually doesn't bother them so much.

        • +1

Well certain wiring is illegal unless licensed so I can see why whirlpool would want to discourage any unlicensed work from being done.

          • +2

@KFC Fan: Yeah, that's exactly what a (ex)-whirlpoolian such as yourself would say.

You really did fit in well over there.

              • +1

                @KFC Fan:

Ha, you have a problem with the fact that it's required by law…

Keep following those orders son. Don't think, just follow.

my god you're some kinda special dude.

Yeah, I like to know how things work so I can fix them. Some people consider me a genius because I know which end of the screwdriver to hold.

Ask someone English about electrical work - in the UK stuff came without a plug, you had to fit it yourself.

And then there's you "Oh but but the law! It's there a reason you know!"

                • @D C: Meanwhile you drive on the left and stop at red lights.

                  • @KFC Fan:

                    Meanwhile…

I ride a bike, I call that life preservation considering what's going in the other direction.

You're not a very good troll, this thread is getting boring.

Crap memory too, remember this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/6668210/redir. "Oh your being mean, sniff sniff, not gunno talk to you any more sniffle.

                    • @D C: So what you're saying is you follow the law and then cry at someone else just for stating that something is illegal unless licensed.

I honestly think you don't have a clue what you're on about anymore you're just that angry and upset.

                      • @KFC Fan:

then cry at someone else just for stating that something is illegal unless licensed.

Who said I'm not licensed to do electrical work?

Most of it isn't that hard, even someone of your apparently limited capabilities could do it. Perhaps not.

Those laws are there to protect the industry, not people, and they're relatively recent. Same thing happened in the UK. You probably tag & test your stuff too, that's a joke.

                        • @D C: No one said it, you just made that up out of nowhere.

Nice try though, you are an extremely poor troll.

There is actually a ton of good content on there. But if you just go on there and fire up some new thread that has been discussed a million times people tend to flame you.

      Disappointing.

      • your comment in nonsensical.

  • i called someone an idiot on one of the sub forums there and got banned from posting. buncha feeling nazis

    • Well calling someone an idiot is a personal attack so I can see the justification on that situation, permanent ban-worthy though would depend on your history.

Love the "get off my lawn" attitude you have there.

Incorrectly labeling people as "trolls and kids" just because they post things you don't agree with is a bit unfortunate. From what I've seen on whirlpool there were actually quite few actual trolls.

      • I haven't labeled anyone, I was just voicing my opinion which is what YOU asked for, lol … I can see why you have issues on forums ;)

        • You said you'd prefer heavily moderated suggesting if it wasn't then the trolls and kids would overrun it. Never said you labeled a specific person incorrectly, merely suggested your usage of the trolls and kids can be used out of place when disagreeing with people.

    • +2

I prefer a heavily moderated forum over one dominated by trolls and kids, guess I'm getting old

Heh. Guess I'm still not that old because I don't feel that way. Yet.

I'd want a forum that's moderated on quality of content, but not on hurt feelings. Pointless flaming should be removed, but substantial albeit offensive comments? Go for it, we're all (mostly) adults.

The problem with people these days is so many of them were shielded in every aspect of their life and they consider a differing opinion an act of violence against them (Not even joking, people are that sensitive these days)

        • That’s the way the world is these days. Trust me if you manage someone and you tell the, their work is sub standard, they claim harassment and bullying

          • @Donaldhump: Yep, I second this. Thank you uncle snake for your words of wisdom. Cannot even have a reasonable discussion at work these days.

        • is so many of them were shielded in every aspect of their life

Lol, this coming from a person who tells me I should follow the law and not replace my own light fittings: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/6668327/redir

A snowflake electrical Nazi, whatever next.

Put the shovel down mate. It’s Friday night, try and enjoy yourself instead of arguing with everybody. Go watch some tv or spend time with your family?

    • I am enjoying myself thanks for the concern :)

I don't mind hearing other peoples opinions especially ones that differ from my own. Even the people posting that don't want to actually have a discussion don't bother me at all, they're allowed to post whatever they want despite how useless it is.

I think people are getting too used to this SJW/PC Culture where they think everyone is hurt by pixels on a website. It seems a lot of Australia's on-line communities are quite left leaning politically which is surprising. I believe I've been quite reasonable in all of my posts despite the blatant attempts to ignore the thread topic completely and just attack my character.

  • +2

Trust me Whirlpool is an improvement from the forum it originally spun off from.

    • Care to elaborate on any experiences you have had?

      • +1

Whirlpool spun off from Bigpond users, the old Telstra cable Internet forum from the late 90s. It. was. vicious. (Although also hilarious). Whirlpool is soft by comparison! And Ozbargain is practically full of kittens by comparison again.

Maybe try Reddit for a while if you've got forum fatigue?

        • I have never been a fan of Reddit because fishing for karma seems to take priority over quality of content. Especially on certain subreddits where meaningful discussion gets pushed out of the way because people try to flood it with memes for karma

          • @KFC Fan: but let's face it, we all want the tiny endorphin rush from seeing the +upvotes on here too.

everytime my comments get negged, fade to grey and end up collapsed. i contemplate suicide (not really).

            • @[Deactivated]: Being negative voted doesn't bother me at all, I've never been that invested in what other people think of me. I like it when people down vote things I have said especially when they don't leave a comment, it just lets me know they were too upset/uninformed to leave an actual comment. I find it extremely entertaining to see people downvote posts that are pure fact and not even my opinion, that's hilarious.

I'd honestly prefer if they left a comment explaining why they downvoted if they were going to but the majority of people don't but hey, that's fine.

          • @KFC Fan: Perhaps there's a gap in the market so to speak then, maybe someone needs to start a tech forum? Aussie tech forums or some such.

            • +1

              @MessyG: OCAU fills that gap.

and lighten up a little KFC, it was a joke.

              • @[Deactivated]: I got that by the tone of your post and specifically the "not really" at the end.

I was just sharing my personal view on the whole upvote/downvote situation.

OCAU (users, not moderators)is major left leaning as well unfortunately(surprisingly), makes engaging in the serious discussion forum completely unbearable.

                • @KFC Fan: Definitely time for a right wing tech forum then!

                  • @MessyG: That would be the same problem but reversed, wouldn't help anything.

  • +2

Gosh it's just a forum. The responses op has passed made it as if, it's life and death. If only people put as much effort on other more important things.

I can already see the reply
"it's a free country…. you don't have to reply if you have nothing conctructive….don't attack op, not contributing to discussion Yada yada yada blablabla"

No the point is #firstworldproblems. if this gets on your nerve then damn every little thing will blow you up. And that's fine, that's you. But as much as you are entitled to your opinion, so do everyone else here. So no need to attack everyone, and digressing to political leanings, and whatever random tangents you go off to above.

"fascists trying to censor everything they don't understand." ah so you are the all knowing being eh? Anyone that disagrees with you, you twist their words, maybe garnish with some extra unrelated topics and brush them off as unintelligent beings, unworthy of respect. Uhuh.

As you may have guess yada yada yada to your reply.

    • Australia is not as free as you may think unfortunately. I wonder how many Australians actually know that we don't actually have "free speech" like they do in the USA.

      • Australia is not as free as you may think unfortunately.

Yeah, people keep making up laws about not being able to change light fittings and all that.

Even worse you get toadies in forums saying that's fine, you must obey the law!. Because it's the law, duh! They ALWAYS follow the law.

        • No one ever said anything about laws for changing your light fittings, I said certain wiring requires a license and if you're that dense to think it's not actually a thing here's a link for you. https://www.acma.gov.au/Industry/Telco/Infrastructure/Cablin…

          • +1

            @KFC Fan: Yeah and?

            Do you have a point?

I'm perfectly capable of running data cables, but apparently I can't because people like you insist I should be licenced, and then moan about Australia going down the tubes because we're not allowed to do anything any more.

            Cognitive dissonance much?

            • @D C: As I said earlier, you drive on the left and stop at the red light.

You pick and choose what laws you want to follow then cry when someone shows reference to backup their argument. You're actually the worst troll I've ever seen, you really need to try a little harder.

              • @KFC Fan:

As I said earlier, you drive on the left and stop at the red light.

And as I replied, if I didn't I'd get run over. Wow, reading comprehension failure as well.

then cry when someone shows reference to backup their argument.

Not much about light fitting in there, or domestic data cabling.

                • @D C: Never stated what specific wiring, clearly stated certain wiring. Looks like your reading comprehension is a complete failure.

                  • @KFC Fan:

                    Never stated what specific wiring,

Perhaps you should have. Might appear you'd have a clue then.

  • Merged from Why is Ozbargain so much better than Whirlpool?

Sorry if this isn't appropriate to post (but hey this is OzB, I'll probably get a friendly reprimand instead of a fiery storm of hellfire like on Whirlpool!)

Seriously, this forum is pretty chill. I don't think I've ever had a post deleted, and I've certainly never been suspended. I used to use Whirlpool for my daily discussions and most of the users there were ridiculously self-righteous. The moderators were far worse and would basically silence anyone who had a different opinion on virtually anything. Even disagreeing with a long time user on WP (who wasn't a mod) could get you suspended. It got hilarious at one point and tbh I expected this place to be the same. Not the case.

I don't know if it's the user base or the site rules/mods, but this place is ions better. Not just for friendly banter and jokes, but for legitimate discussions or helpful tips.

    On ya Ozbargain.
