Well. Better buy pocophone or something at this price. Apple soon going to stop supporting 6 and SE.

    • -4

Better to buy pocophone at this price regardless.

Crushes this phone + many more recent models by far.

    • +10

Umm SE has same specs as 6s. Just 6s has 3D Touch and a better frontcamera plus the larger screen

      • +1

        and Second Gen Touch ID

      • +1

I've had both, one work one personal at the same time… the touchscreen on the SE is not as responsive, it's performance is also bizarre at times.

Despite the paper specs i.e. same processor, the iPhone 6s is IMO a significantly better phone.

        • I can vouch for the touchscreen being non responsive while setting it up for my mother. Other than that it’s been snappy.

        • +4

I moved from a 6S to the SE.

I actually find the SE to be significantly faster. I’ve always assumed it’s because it is pushing less pixels to the screen. So, YMMV.

I certainly won’t be upgrading any time soon. Not until I find a better phone in the same form-factor.

But I picked up my 32GB SE for $300 more than a year ago, so it seems it’s less of a bargain these days.

      • +2

SE is a fine phone, one of apple's best. but the screen is unusually small, loads of websites aren't designed for screens that small. A lot of website builders preview mobile mode for responsive, but they target iPhone 6 screen size. iPhone 5 size is often an afterthought. there's been times that between the Nav Menu and the footer bar there was like 15% of the screen left to try and view the article with. if you want a small phone though this is your best choice still.

        • has to do with apps that use a browser, as some browser based apps are developed on PC browsers and the old had 1366x 768 screens and is same problem on tablets that are 800x600.. try loading chrome or firefox on your phone.

apps which are based on API calls shouldn’t have this issue as the app on the phone takes care of presentation and doesn’t use a browser.

also the hosted application can tell if you have a mobile device browser and should adjust if the work experience kid has done his work …. hence access “the age” from mobile device it tries to tell you to,load the app …. access from laptop or desktop it doesn’t ……load the right browser on your mobile device and the web site thinks you are on a desktop and allows you to read more of the paper for free …… eg from a surface tablet vs ipad or android tablet.

        • +4

          "unusually small"?
It was the standard size for years!

    • +13

This should assist you to hold an opinion based on fact

5 years for the 5s is incredible

I’ve had the se since it came out. Replaced 18 months ago. Then replaced again on Monday with another 2 years warranty.

Looks like I’ll get updates too

      • +6

There's lots about Apple I'm not a fan of (and there's little chance I'd pay for one of their phones) but this trend is commendable.

        • +6

I've heard that some phone makers like Sony and Kogan take ages if at all. It wasn't something I was conscious of until now. It's a pity this isn't a significant variable in people's decisions.

Like stickymoo I had my SE replaced just before the warranty period ran out with no questions asked so with that kind of after sales service I felt the risk was low enough to buy an XS. Not sure if I'd be comfortable spending this much on a flagship Sony with phonewhiz tales. Buying a phone is a lot more than comparing specs and price.

But Apple has led the way for Android to be what it is. Google has copied so much from Apple

          • -1

@asa79: Apple wouldnt be in existence today if it hadnt ripped off Epson's idea for a mouse-based personal computer interface. They all do it.

            • +3

              @cannedhams: Epson Xerox

Now you have me wondering about a world where Epson made the best computers

            • +1

@cannedhams: Isn't that the same as saying Microsoft and Google wouldn't be around either

          • @asa79: On the other hand Android has led the way for apple to be what it is. Apple has copied so much from Google anf Android manafacturers.

            • @[Deactivated]: Is that why most Android phones look like apples?

              • @asa79: Is that why apples have nice big he screens, water rest stance, wirelss charging and stereo sprakers now? :-) @asa79

I'm sure all manafacturers copy each others great design features :-) why wouldn't you!

                • -1

@[Deactivated]: Who cares about big screens or wireless Chargers or stereo speakers and waterproof. They aren't required.

As long as you can do your calls, apps etc without having to reboot the phone multiple times a day or put up with crashing apps

                  • +1

@asa79: Yeah true! My android phones have always been great in that regard. Easy and reliable

    • +4

no band 28 no nfc on poco ….seems even the iphone 5 had band 28, and iphone se has both.
      i’m an android user.

      • +13

& they say Apple users are sheep..

band 28 & nfc are usually the first things mentioned on any android deal.

But the poco gets mindlessly upvoted

      • +1

Technically nfc is on iPhone just not allowed like Android yet

      • +4

How many people actually use nfc and band 28 to be honest. Is it really worth the investment

        • +1

Yes to both. Band28 is not something you can really notice unless a side by side comparison. However NFC is awesome for payments.

I can now even draw cash from ATMs without my card.. barely carry a wallet these days

          • @daft009:

However NFC is awesome for payments.

And for scanning people's Opal cards

          • @daft009:

I can now even draw cash from ATMs without my card.. barely carry a wallet these days

Can u do it using an iPhone?

          • @daft009: You are aware that Apple have nfc too for payments just not open for anything else

            • @asa79: okay. but your question was "is NFC & band28 useful"

              • @daft009: And as per comments it seems that there is nothing in android NFC that makes it better

                • @asa79: Didn't say it was. It's better than no NFC

                  • @daft009: iPhone does have NFC for Apple Pay, how do you think that works? or does the name ring true

        • it is if you go on holidays in country areas…you get band 28 coverage in more areas ..i’ve tested it on last holidays, my son with his xiaomi had to tether off my phone which had band 28…nfc is good as it stops the need to get out credit cards or if you left wallet at home.

          • @garage sale: Never had an issue with my old iphones in rural areas like mining sites etc

        • There is an app called LTE discovery, you can see what band you are currently using. I think phone has to be rooted.
Where I live the only band available is band 28.
NFC is a must if you want to tap pay with your phone. I'm sure there are lots of users around.

      • iPhone has NFC, so for an "android" user you might need to learn how to research before stating incorrect facts

Does the iPhone SE have NFC / Apple Pay?

Yes, unlike the iPhone 5s model it replaced the iPhone SE does support Apple Pay. The iPhone SE is equipped with Apple's Touch ID fingerprint sensor for using Apple Pay at retail locations and within apps. It is also capable of receiving and redeeming rewards using rewards cards. This means that every available iPhone model now supports Apple Pay.

        https://nfc.today/learn/how-to-read-nfc-tags-with-iphone
Apple recently updated the iOS software so that the current XS, XS Max and XR iPhones can scan NFC tags with or without an additional App. It is possible that at some point in the future built-in tag scanning will be available on the 7,8 or X. However, right now, you need to get an App.

    • 6 yes but Se will be around longer for support

  • I want to buy a 128gb (don't care which colour).

Any way to check store stock?

    Thanks :)

    • +1

Looks like you’ll have to call them up tomorrow & ask if any stores in your area have stock.

      • +1

        Thanks :)

    • Phone call…

  • -3

Do yourself a favour… DO NOT BUY THIS TEENY WEENY SLOW PHONE.

Sent from my work iPhone SE that drives me mental, constantly.

    • How is that possible? I thought Apple phones are lag proof.

    • +7

I think these phones throttle when the battery turns to shit. You should try sending it to apple to replace the battery, they discounted the replacement cost until the end of December.

      • +4

Yeah I have an SE and it's the snappiest phone I've ever had. If it's slow then you should get it looked into - they're not slow.

If you're upset about how small it is you probably should have noticed that when buying.

        • +1

Another iPhone SE user checking in and agreeing - I'm supremely satisfied with it's performance.

      • the lag was to extend battery life when running low …..my android does the same but flashes up power mode message ….

    • +3

What’s your battery health on? My mother has a SE and it’s been snappy

    • +14

Rather have a phone that isnt the size of a tablet and don't have to do thumb yoga to reach every part of the screen.

      • +3

But most people like big phones they can put in their purse or man bag as they can put in pocket any more. I don't get it. If it doesn't fit in your pocket then it's a tablet

        • i moved to big phone as i use the browser a lot and don’t sms but do voice calls if needed, getting pants with big enough pockets is a challenge with big phones and you look dorky carrying in hand all the time.

    • +5

It’s not slow, it’s more capable then many android phones still after 3 years. Yes it’s small, but some people prefer that. Maybe ask your work to upgrade to a larger screen phone?

    • +5

      It’s not slow.

Plenty of YouTube real world comparisons SE vs iPhone 7, 8

    • +1

it's not slow, has the same guts as 6S. Which is getting long in the tooth now actually. It is teeny weeny though.

    • The SE is a huge phone for me. Too big.

I really still wish they made phones in the iPhone 4 form factor. That was perfect.

  • -2

My brother is an apple supporter and even he hates his SE, stay away.

  • I bought SE 128gb in Oct2017 for $520… one year on and still selling for $499?

Don't get me wrong, it's a great phone but the pricing need to be more competitive

    • +1

You gotta remember this phone is officially discontinued. If you want to keep one for nostalgic purposes, then this is the best you can get for brand new phone .

  • +1

SE user here, it’s great since I got the whole thing replaced by apple for $39! Before the switch the battery was causing lag issues.

It’s not an XS but it’s not priced as one either. I think it beats any new Android at the $400 mark

    • +1

Respectfully, any Xiaomi or Oppo phone at that price point would kick this phone's arse up the stairs and back down again.

      • +2

Xiaomi comes with free chinese spyware lol

      • +1

Can you point me to an alternative with the same form-factor or smaller?

The iPhone SE is at my upper limit in terms of how big a phone I’m willing to carry around.

  • +2

Ahh bought 3 iPhone SE for $249 from the Big W deal. Great times

    • Should have seen the Target deal!

      • How much was the target deal?

        • +2

$100. Missed out totally on that but a few people snagged them.

          • +1

@4892: Are you thinking of the iPod touch deal?

            • @FXD: Nope these were before they went on clearance. It seems Target drops old stock gradually and then all of a sudden it drops to a stupid price and gets sold out in a few days.

    • Okay broden

      • -1

        Nah broden wouldve bought 10.

        • Nah broden would’ve bought every item in stock which is likely what you did

  • +2

Prefer to buy an OPPO R15 or R15 pro

    • +3

I'm an Android fan and iOS fan- no bias here. But based on 2 x Oppo failures, I wouldn't lay my hard earned on another. R9 Plus capacitive buttons died, camera died on the other, both in under 6 months.
I've flipped between iPhone and Android for 7 years, but there's no doubting Apple's lead in both support and warranty convenience. There's most of the premium.

      • same, i’m on android, used to have apple, only on android as strapped for cash , if work offered a phone i’d go apple every time.

  • Not a bad phone, runs snapchat better then most Androids

    • +7

You can blame Snapchat CEO for that.

  • Not a fan of Apple. But, I enjoyed using this phone. It was snappy ( but, never upgraded to OS 11 at all though). Last use was around May 2018.

  • +4

Not sure how up to date this is, but doesn't leave many options for store purchase https://www.jbhifi.com.au/features/phones/apple-iphone-se-st…

    • Where and how did you get that 😯

      • I had this link from a jb hifi rep.
But as I said wasn't sure how accurate it is with regards stock.

    • I know Elizabeth st store doesn’t have any in stock. Actually the sales woman checked for me and they don’t have any in stock at all.

  • +4

After spending ages trying to find a good 4 inch Android to replace my wife's Galaxy S4 mini, with no luck, I caved and got her the iPhone SE. It's great for her, as she's not into phablets at all. There need to be more midrange phones in the 4 inch size for those that want them. It was either crap entry level, or 2 year old overpriced mini flagships when I was looking.
Anyway, It was a pain swapping ecosystems, but now it's happy wife, happy life!

  • +1

It was going for less than this on prepaid a year ago

  • +1

Purchased a Optus Prepaid 32GB (phone was unlocked) about 6 months ago for $399 with $50 Optus credit. Still runs like new with battery lasting up to 3 days at a time with moderate use with no significant lag or slow downs. As others have said the SE has the same internals as the iPhone 6s and will hopefully be supported for a couple more years yet.

  • -1

So wacky boii, these prices are whack for a very weak phone

  • Great little phone, I snapped up a couple when prices dropped.

  • -1

Way over priced for a very old small display phone. AusPost was clearing it out for $299 in March and then the $249 BigW dieal.

Seriously why would anyone buy this phone for $399 (Who cares about Apple's regular price).

iPhone build quality has been poor for the last few years and is only getting worse.

I had to repair each my iphone 7 and iPhone X twice.

However Apple expects customers to shell out 2X prices for their poor build quality but premium priced phones?

Consumers have to vote with their feet.

A lot of consumers are already doing that and apple is scrambling to revive iPhone sales

    • android doesn’t run Imessages or facetime …. and if it’s something that you use with other family members or friends because they have apple ( iphone, ipad or macbook or imac) then you stay on ios …..

it’s about apps not hardware and the SE seems to be the cheapest way at moment to get a phone that supports certain apps.

some people don’t like whatsapp because facebook tracks and sells your details , by product of a free service and we know nothing is free, some people don’t like skype because it doesn’t convert between sms and internet messages unless you have an active paid up subscription ….imessages does those things.

by the way i’m an android user but also own an ipad so use apps on both ecosystems.

  • +2

You can get a lot of modern, more powerful Android phones for $400

    Mi Mix 2 ($372)
    Huawei Honor 10 ($420)

    the list goes on.

However the iPhone SE does have a great one hand form factor.

I wish Android manufacturers would make more phones with 65-68mm wide, at the moment the only good ones are the Galaxy S8, S9 and Xperia XZ2 Compact, which are both way too expensive.

    • +3

I wish Android manufacturers would make more phones with 65mm wide

This. Not all phones have to be giant.

First there was the trend towards the smallest possible phone, now towards the largest but thinnest (read:easily breakable).
Just make it ergonomic and drop proof, "like the good old days".
      /end rant

      • big phones are even more of an issue when you have kids , they have smaller pockets so either have to carry their phone or in the back pack ….one leads to drops, the other leads to crushes of the physical not romantic kind.

  • +1

May aswell call this OzREVIEW - yes you can get a different phone for cheaper, but its not an iPhone or a phone with iOS. Apples with Apples!!
