What's Your Best Hard Rubbish Find/Haul?

I've had some really great hard rubbish hauls over the years. I've always been a bit of a hard rubbish pirate and dumpster diver so I've had some really good finds over the years, but today I think I hit my mother-lode.

Today I got:
1) LG 42LD560 (1080p, 100hz, smart functions, well reviewed) working fine. There was a Hitachi TV there also I am thinking of going back to get!
2) Brand new hot pink Lorna Jane shoes in the exact size my gf wears.
3) 2x 3/4 full Marc Jacobs & Ralf Lauren perfumes.
4) Samsung Gear VR (has been opened but protective plastic still on!).
5) Swanky SMEG microwave that still had the protective plastic on it! I ended up going back home and trading my disgusting microwave with it.

I'm going to head back there and see what else I can find!

EDIT:
6) Asus tablet
7) Large jewelers screw driver set
8) 2x Sagemcom NBN modem routers with AC wifi, USB3 and 4x gigabit ethernet ports.

Going to go back in a few hours and might find even more!

What's everyone's best finds?

Comments

    • Well if you're paying for it, does it really count?

Sounds like you should check do some regional op shopping to find those jewel CD cases for old school games, or even better - big box copies. There might be some gems left in areas that aren't frequented too much.

      • Whenever I travel I make an effort to always look around. Big boxes are getting so rare now.

        • Lifeline bookfest used to have loads of boxed games. Got a copy of Lemmings , played it once and probably get donated back at some point.

    • Well if we are counting Gumtree freebies and eBay finds..

I think that's a whole new thread waiting to happen.

      • I didn't include eBay or Gumtree in any of mine.

        • +1

If you pay for things left out on the kerb you're doing it wrong lol.

          • @pennypincher98: Is kurb collection even a thing snymore?

            • @Clear: Oh yeah more than ever. Only problem is people around me only chuck out things after they've fallen apart and don't work any more.

Was looking at various chairs before I realised the wood is all cracked and there is nothing under the fabric to hold it up.

I like the idea of Jacobs & Lauren perfumes …. mmm what was the Novichock connection?, at least a long way from the UK!!!!.

    • Oh no, I tried both on each wrist to see if they were good. If I stop posting/voting, you'll know what has happened to me!

Soooooo.. any chance you'll be putting a medium format camera out on the curb next hard rubbish day :P

i once pissed into some perfume i put out for hard rubbish.

        • -5

          HAHAHAHA :D Priceless.

Come around to my place next time. I'm having another "dog turd in a box" extravaganza based on this thread. Feel free to bring around a few bottles of "home brew perfume" that we can throw into the mix.

I once found a crate of top shelf magazines. Some of the pages were stuck together, but they were still useable.

    • -2

magazines with pages stuck together ???

    • +8

Name checks out. Also, got any your done with? ;)

    • Those are actually worth something. If they're from the 90s or older, they can sell for $10 or more

      • 30 years old dried jizz, delightful

    • Just rub one out and add to the pages

last year I picked up a Philips soundbar with subwoofer w/ inbuilt DVD player - HTS6100. worked perfectly. bought a remote off aliexpress for $12.

not curbside but stuff being dumped storey - 3 years ago I was at the tip dropping off some junk and this bloke rocked up in a van and parked next to me . He was struggling to pull a LG 65" inch plasma TV out so I offered to give him a hand and asked what was wrong with it. he said it kept turning off so I asked If i could have it. he said "sure, better than it being trashed". So I took it home plugged it in and it worked. bought a replacement remote from aliexpress for $5 posted. connected a dvd player and played a movie on repeat for 5 hours no problem. then I noticed channel 9 would cause the TV to shut off. Googled that issue and found out it was a firm ware issue. contacted LG and they said they would send someone around to flash the firmware. a week later a guy arrived. plugged in a USB stick, flashed the new firmware and from then the TV worked 100%. TV was too big for my house so I sold it on gumtree for $300.

    • Good on ya… as a fellow Plasma fan, taking a punt n saving one from the scrapheap. 👍

    • +2

      I'm surprised a 1080p plasma at 65" doesn't sell for more!

      • +1

That's because they use as much electricity as an oven.

        • +1

I like a TV that doubles as a heater in winter!

  • The last hard waste collection I put out various stuffs. Someone took a rusted barbell my brother abandoned that nearly did me in carrying it out , while I found a lovely brand new dog bed which was used immediately after a wash. Nothing as good as OP's finds.

  • Don't have the vehicle for it but once saw a few CRT TV's and some nice furniture probably worth a few hundred dollars in a swanky beach suburb once before.

Usually it has been I who have been putting out stuff on the kerb for others to take.

I remember somebody took I think some really old pc like pre 1995 in under half an hour.

Some working office chairs were also gone in under an hour.

There was another item I remember was really good me and my dad left out and it was gone in like 30 minutes I forget what it was but it was something pretty decent I remember.. maybe some more pc stuff or definitely tech hardware related imho.

A bit ambiguous… not sure if that’s “a lot” or “not at all”

    • I grabbed a dyson upright 2 years ago.

powerhead switch was broken so bought a replacement off aliexpress for $1.39. installed it. gave the vac a very thorough clean.

      sold vac for $130

  • Should have knocked on the door and asked what else they might have. Sure this wasn't out the front of a jb HiFi? News @ 6pm ;)

I've got a 'condition', anytime I see Made in Japan electronics from the 80 - 90s, I tend to pick em up. Mainly stereos, stereo components, and until recently VCRs.

Take em home, fix them if needed, clean em up inside and outside, and neatly stack them in my shed.

    Btw, I need a bigger shed…

    • Don't have any Japanese Sega Saturns do ya? ;)

      • Nope, was never into gaming 😶

when I lived in Sendai City in North Japan there was a group of university dormitory buildings. they were ~40 years old, double storey, 30 twin rooms on each level. 4 buildings , 3 of which were unused. / abandoned.

at the end of the semester the students (if not returning to uni) would just pack their bare essentials and leave everything else behind. I was there 13 years ago and the place had last been used 5 years previously.

game systems. games systems a plenty. just sitting there, still hooked up to TVs in the dorm rooms. at the time they weren't collectable. piles of games. I just walked past them.

every game system you could think of that was available in Japan nearly 20 years ago…

        • +1

at the end of the semester the students (if not returning to uni) would just pack their bare essentials and leave everything else behind.

This happens in Australia also. I used to live next to a large student accommodation hub with mostly foreign students.
End of year, I guess many of them are going back home and cost of transport home isn't worth it, and lets be honest, some them are spoilt rich kids and can afford to throw valuables away.
This was probably my biggest/best score actually. Heaps of small things, but also a 100watt electric guitar amp. Massive and heavy. Worked great, just dumped next to the overflowing skip bins. I didn't have an electric guitar at the time, so sold it my mate for about half what its second hand value (I think $150 I sold it for). Jammed on it at his place a few times, sounded very good IMO. Wished I had kept it now, as I finally have a decent electric guitar, but only a couple of crappy amps :/ .
The student hall monitors of sorts, spotted me and asked what I was doing, I was honest and said I was reusing the amp. I was on foot, by the time I drove car around and was loading into my vehicle, campus security was there, and basically said not to do it again (amp was already half into car). This specific campus was meant to be one that encourages innovation and new technology to improve future and reduce environmental impact. Sure, security aren't exactly part of that, but them not wanting to reuse and recycle is at odds with everything that campus claims to stand for.

I put out an old foosball table when I lived at my parents that got snapped up while I was still taking more stuff out. The delight on a kids face when he rode past and seen it was priceless. He called his parents and hung out beside it until they showed up to take it home.

  • I've had a De Longhi coffee machine, Peugeot road bike, a Toshoba laptop, a Dyson and a worm farm.

  • A mid range Panasonic microwave. I then put my old one out in the kerb minus all the good bits and with a brick in place of the transformer. Then used loctite on all the screws as I hate those scabby people who drive around making a mess tearing out transformers and collecting scrap metal.

  • Scored a women's Giant Acapulco bike once, not the greatest bike but it was clearly hardly ever used, and it rode well.

Had to laugh this morning on my way to work. Walked past a house with about two-thirds of a smashed up single bed frame with a "free" sign on it. Oooh look, I've got some trash too big for my bin so I'll put a sign on it and stick it out front.

  • +3

A big solid 200l compost bin, a big broom which works much better than any I have ever had.
Been using both continuously for 10 years.

That's a lot of sweeping. How many k's you clocked up?

  • People would be worried about other people taking personal stuff that might have private or personal information still on them especially since these same people would know where they live.

The other issue would be maybe its not rubbish. I was moving some sofas and a friend was helping and had brought a trailer as well as a bucket with a lot of brand new straps and winches and other accessories. The bucket got taken by some idiot while we were moving the sofa.. Problem was it actually had a lot of accessories and most of them were brand new.

Years ago I picked up a couple of Dell precision servers from the road side. Brought them back home, placed them in the garage and forgot about them.

A few months later I finally got around to opening them up and found each had a couple of Quadro FX5600 cards. Placed the cards on eBay (after testing to ensure they worked ok), and sold them for $350 each!

    • Best lot so far

    • Wow, where was that? This thread is making me think I should go scavenging when hard rubbish comes around in the nicer suburbs…

      • Trigg, WA.

  • I just picked up as Kriesler Lowliner 25! Gold State Edition! A real little beauty!

  • Saw a Yamaha 5.1 system and a Delonghi Magnifica in the Ewaste at Bunnings. Was told within 2 seconds I wasn't allowed to take anything out. Hoping the Bunnings staff took them home and they didn't end up in the ground

    • You cant take it because they will sell it to a waste company that will recover the gold and precious metals on the chip boards.

Our entire 4 bedroom house is furnished with hard-rubbish. 3 x Lounges, tables (hardwood coffee table, glass outdoor table), chairs, fridge, washing machine, bed-frames, vacuum cleaner, etc, etc, etc.

Basically everything except technology (TV's, laptops, consoles) and our mattresses.

    • When I was share housing, pretty much all our furniture apart tech, mattresses & White goods were hard rubbish or a milk crates which seemed to regularly find our way into our neighbourhood.

      • when I first moved with a group of mates we were sitting in the front yard. there was a skip 2 houses up. these blokes came from the other direction carrying a 2 parts of a sectional couch. asked them what they were doing with them and they said they were dumping them (and the other 4 sections) grabbed all 6 sections and they were our lounge furniture for the next 5 years.

  • +3

I haven't ever touched someone else's rubbish but have put out some pretty amazing stuff out for collection and it made me happy to help people load it into their car (expensive baby things, etc.) knowing that those people may have not been able to afford it (assuming it was for them).

One time I threw out a very decent fridge and a PC steering wheel which I found out later, was highly sought after as a collectable.

Also, I've met some pretty interesting people who have taken some barely usable stuff or stuff they could easily buy very cheaply.

One mans trash is another mans treasure I guess.

On the walk home from Uni I found an old Spectravideo computer from 1983 with manual, sold it 2 weeks ago for $750. It didn't even have a power supply so there was no way to test if it was working (mentioned this in the listing) Still in shock…

    • +1

LOL, this reminded me I have an Amiga 500 pack (monitor, memory expansion, some drives & games) I picked up last year. Still sitting in the garage. Haven't gotten around to testing any of it yet though.

Never found anything great, or of significant resale value etc. But many years ago, shortly after moving into small unit, my friend and I went round with his ute. He wanted tools, I wanted furniture for my new unit. We went and got heap of stuff, knowing that my pickup day was later in the week. So picked up early in week, sussed everything out and tested it all etc. He got a nice stereo that I fixed for him (just needed cassette tape head cleaner). He got some decent tools, a trolley jack. I got plenty of half-decent furniture. Some decent but probably of no value, artwork can be found. I know someone that picks up nice artwork they see on hard rubbish to kind of rescue it, thinking it's such a shame for a nice piece of art to go into trash and/or be left out in the weather and rain.
It would be nice if everyone collecting things was respectful and kept things neat. Then instead of having the council rule only put it out night before, we could make the rule put things out 7 days before, so as the maximum amount could be re-used rather than going into landfill.

imagine the fire place stories 100 years from now, after the bombs have fallen:

was there really a time when people just threw away perfectly good stuff? yes son, there was…

but wouldnt the super mutants just smash them? no son, there were no super mutants back then, and people still complained…

      • Lol, and there was a tv show that predicted it all, with a delivery boy named fry, his mutant lover Layla, and a drunken robot that bends stuff

        • +1

          I love star trek.

I once got a box full of Pokemon stuff. Forgot about it completely for 5 years until we had to move house. The removalist who spotted it offered to buy the whole lot for $300 which luckily I refused. Turned out there was a rare shining card and a few collectable items. My cousin ended up taking it from me in exchange for $1000.

  • 2 brand new Weber Bbqs on separate occasions

Owners didnt want to make use of them, I sure have…

    5) Swanky SMEG microwave that still had the protective plastic on it! I ended up going back home and trading my disgusting microwave with it.

Do you mean you dumped your disgusting microwave back at the place where you got the SMEG one? If so then that is definitely illegal dumping.

    • It was the communal hard rubbish area for the whole apartment building, all 200+ apartments.

I can't illegally dump my own hard rubbish in my own hard rubbish area.

  • Good job op, bargain hunter for real.
I once found old snes sold for 350

Hot pink Lorna Jane shoes found in dumpster, your GF must be so lucky

Got a near new Mercedes E400, was locked and didn't have a key, so I had to hotwire it, but after a quick change of plates, the thing is still going after 2 years.

  • My housemate found a wallet with green colour paper Aussie notes. I think they are at least 20 years ago.

    • Did he find it in somebody's pocket?

      • Yes, in a pocket:) but From a bag of clothes sitting in hard rubbish.

  • Nothing spectacular. In one day, I found stuff I needed. New antenna pole (still had tags on it) and pine side tables.

Samsung 50 inch flat screen TV seemed in too good condition, it powered on then after a while switched off, googled the model number, was common problem, replaced capacitor for $2 with soldering iron and we have used it for over 8 years lol. Still works fine.

  • One time I grabbed an Amiga 500 with a bunch of games. It worked fine (and continues to work fine in my collection)

  • Rebel sports padded weight bench and leg press. Worth close to $260. Sold it for $110. It was as new.

  • -1

    Used car tyres

  • 3) 2x 3/4 full Marc Jacobs & Ralf Lauren perfumes.

Be very careful with this. It could be novichuk

  • 5x Commodore Amiga 500's, a $800 ultrasonic cleaner outside my dentist (a bit gross to clean anything personal with it but I use it for cleaning electronic circuits)

  • Just lots of stuff that we've onsold.an esky in perfect condition got $50 the day I listed it… Tables and chairs, had someone buy some wooden tables from interstate… We are using a washing machine we got from the kerbside and we've also sold many vacuums that worked fine but just needed a clean. Made $600 in the past 6 months from stuff picked up though.

  • Two wheeled golf buggy with broken wheels. 2 x 4 inch self tapping screws and bingo!

  • Wow, someone must be going through a really bad break up and decided to throw away all the stuffs away!!!

    • usually when someone is going through a break up, they are so busy with work, personal issues and dramas, stress etc the last thing they need is to be dealing with some gumtree idiot lowballing them on everything for sale, so it might be easier just to get rid of it all

      • Yeah that's why they are at the side of the road :p

  • Found an old pair of Bang & Olufsen S75 stereo speakers. Sound half decent, still have them sitting in the study.

  • +2

Disgusting and environmentally irresponsible that councils are cracking down on people pillaging hard rubbish.

    • +2

Yeah, it's fine provided people don't pull stuff apart for scrap metal, or tear open bags and boxes and then leave a mess over the curbside. If you everyone leaves hard rubbish as neat as they found it, doesn't make lots of noise, doesn't do it in the middle of the night, and accepts that if they hurt themselves doing it then it's entirely their problem, then I think it's to be totally fine.

    • as usual, the few have made it worse for the many. also the council make money from recycling all hard rubbish goods. so if people then "steal" hard rubbish goods, the council isnt making as much money

and we all know how much councils love making money #ParkingFines

Study chairs, shelf, studio light kit set. I live in an apartment in mel cbd, gotta said those rich international students when they are moving back home, they often throw away heaps of useful stuff especially furnitures ( bed frames, couch, tables, desk, chairs, etc). I once walk past a Gucci slipper. Didnt pick up tho cos it’s only had one. Not a pair.
