Do You Really need a TV?

Nowadays do you really need a TV ?

I'm thinking now my old TV is broken why bother buying another?

I can watch everything from my laptop. I'm noticing more and more friends telling me they are ditching the TV and don't need one anymore. Of course if you have a family it's different but if your alone or sharing do you need it ?

Who here doesn’t have a TV?

I'm going to feel strange without one but I didn't really watch it anyway and with the apps you can watch TV programs when you want.

Laptop has such a small screen. Need a big TV, and soundbar or soundbase for the sound.

    • honestly. is this why they've stopped making bigger tvs? I was hoping we'd be up to 100 inches by the time I need a new one.

i would never watch more than a short youtube clip on a laptop

      • I was hoping we'd be up to 100 inches by the time I need a new one.

There apparently do exist 100" TVs; Harvey Norman was using four of them together to make a bigger screen for advertisement purposes…dunno what the brand and models they were, but someone said a customer wanted to hook up an xbox to it to see what it'd be like on the big screen and they were blown away by it, had to stand/sit like 20 meters away….just a story I heard….

    Gaming?

  • I use my TV for Plex and that's for about 30 minutes as i'm going to sleep lol

Pawn looks so much better on the big screen

    • +1

      even better on VR headset

      • +6

        even better in real life

    • Pawn

I prefer looking at the bishops personally.

You can replace a TV with computers but it's nice to have large screen.

    • +1

      And nice sound.

  • You clearly don’t have an Xbox.

  • Laptop all the way.

  • +6

ok if you're single and foreveralone

  • +3

sweet when you invite 6 mates around to watch the state of origin / cricket / anything

why have a house, just live in a combi

Do You Really need to Capitalize Almost Every Word?

  • I haven't used a TV since around 2013

Was it Celebrity Splash that tipped you over the edge?

I watch everything on my computer, don't need a TV.

I suppose a large TV is good for a cinematic experience, but after you're a few meters away the screen is taking up the same amount (if not less) of your vision anyway.

  • +1

just for the record, you eyes will go cactus after a while, ie once you hit 40 watching so close up

  • If there was a method of streaming XB1 like consoles to a 19 inch iPad ergonomic style device that also has smart functions, I’d imagine that largely TV’s would in many homes become somewhat redundant, however smaller portable screens cannot replace a large screen that a family or group can gather around, and smaller screens require multiple purchases in order for multiple folks to watch at the same time.

One future alternative could be VR, or headsets that the user can share between multiple users.

The main road block for smaller screens, iPad style devices is cost. When a single iPad costs $500 and a TV might cost $1000, it just makes much more sense for families to buy a TV, and possibly a second hand iPad rather than three or four iPads.

Personally, I don’t watch much FTA but my olds and grand-olds still do, there’s no way they’d ever go to just Netflix, as it’s just not their style, they’ve grown up with the wireless and then the idiot box.

But my money is that TV’s will slowly become less common, but are unlikely to be completely replaced in the future, but who knows.

why need a laptop, you could watch all the same content on your phone…

If you're fine with a 15-17" laptop screen, sure..

But sitting on the couch with a 50-70" screen is way more enjoyable.. regardless of the source material being watched

    • +1

This. And some speakers which cost more than $10.

    • +3

I only watch movies on my smart watch. Phone screens are too big and bulky.

  • I am so out of touch i thought you were moving to the Amish lifestyle

  • Yes if you have friends or a partner to watch with.

  • +2

No I definately need a TV, we are a family and crowding round a laptop to watch something is not practical, that being said I think the TV my parents had when I was growing up was probably less than 30 inch so not really that hard to I guess (yes I just argued against myself)

    TO WATCH OZB SUPER BIG

Who here doesn’t have a TV?

    I don't, just because I'm poor.

  • You only don't need a TV if you're all alone with no significant other, family, or housemates

    • or you're not into tv, movies or games. None of those any where near priorities in my life.

No tv would be okay, but no way I'm downgrading to a laptop.

  • I havent had a tv for about 5 years.

My son has one for his xbox, but its not plugged in to an antenna.

I watch all content on my phone or laptop.

  • I don't watch TV. I have two computer monitors.

I think it's been about 15 years since I watched commercial TV.

The only time I watch is during electricity blackouts on an Android tablet.

It's nice not being brainwashed by advertising and propaganda from the news so I highly recommend it.

  • Do you really "need" a TV? No.

With all the utter rubbish on commercial free to air TV I have no idea why people habitually sit down every night and watch it along with 20 minutes of advertising per hour.

There are so many other things to do when you have a computer.

I do have a TV but I watch pre-recorded programs without the advertising. I do not watch anything as it's broadcast. I do watch some really stupid things like "A Current Affair" as they sometimes…as in very rarely have a segment I might be interested in. I fast forward through the advertising and uninteresting segments.

ACA should really be classified as a comedy show.

    • it's be great if somebody published just the interesting parts of shows. Sometimes there's clearly slow news days and it's as bad as ACA.
and the shows videoing paramedics, immigration etc would sometimes be interesting, but just the actual 5 minutes of footage, not looping and padding it out over 30 minutes.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be willing to pay for it though :)

My 75" 4K TV is my monitor.

    • Which one? I am in the market for one now.

  • I didn't really watch it anyway and with the apps you can watch TV programs when you want.

Seems like you're thinking to just use laptop and apps to 'watch tv' on laptop. I do this with smart tv functionality. I haven't even bothered with finding (asking previous tenant) where the tv wall plug is. I used to download stuff and watch all my most favoured content this way. Now I have a sony android tv, does pretty much everything in the way of streaming, including ability to watch free to air regular tv stuff via apps.
My sony android tv is great, but certainly there are boxes to attach to any tv and run the apps. There does seem to be alot less adds watching free2air channel's shows on the apps. Netflix, stan, prime, and torrent downloaded content has zero adds (and after getting used to no adds, a 3 minute set of adverts on antenna tv can get rather annoying tbh).
I guess depends on screen quality of your laptop, but IMO the price point of a laptop with great screen, well might as well buy television (either with apps you want built in, or just get a cheap android box to connect to it, or maybe chromecast, but I have no experience with chromecast personally, just have used wd live box and consoles for smart tv functionality when not inbuilt)

  • I'm going to feel strange without one but I didn't really watch it anyway

I had this very same dilemma when I moved to a new city years ago. Living alone in a place I barely knew anyone. I rarely watched tv but, like you, I thought that a home wasn't really complete without one.

I went out and bought one within a few weeks anyway and I'm glad I did. I started meeting people and because I lived in the middle of the city, I invited people over quite a bit, especially before and after we went out drinking. The tv is what everyone automatically sat around. It's the "centrepiece" of the place.

To this day, I dont watch much tv, but im glad I have one. The sound system is around the tv and so is the couch. It often helps fill the silent gaps. Without it, I think it'll be quite a different (boring) place and im not sure if it'd really feel like a home.

Being alone, I actually had similar thoughts about whether or not to get a couch as well. But I did go out and get one to put in front of the tv.

Edit: I've now got a semi home theatre with surround sound setup in the living room of my apartment in the middle of the city almost purely for guests (esp those of the opposite sex!). It's cost me about $5k in the last couple of months to do it, but I think it's worth it.

  • You don’t need anything. You do you, man.

    • Just a wooden chair in the middle of an empty room.

      • +1

        buying unnecessary furniture!

When I was baching, an upside garbage bin was my chair and the box from the washing machine was my table. (For a while at least)

I guess I didn't really spend much time at home - but I do remember being a bit embarrassed when friends called in.

        • my chair is my everything (side table, dinner table, chair, clothes hanger, file organizer, charging station, working area)

plus it rotates and can go up and down!

  • Recently, the HDMI ports on my TV blew during a storm. Power surge, i spose.
As a result I cant watch stuff I recorded.
I can watch it all the laptop, but I already spend a lot of time in front of it.
So I do miss flopping on the couch in front of the telly.

Previous experience has taught me that sitting in one position for long periods of time is very bad for your back.
So for no other reason, i would say keep watching stuff on the telly.
Yes, you can sit anywhere with a latop, but it will involve stooping and craning your neck.

Better still, go for walk or jog :)

    Cheers.

  • Haven't had a TV for nearly 10 years. My 28" iMac is fine…

  • I prefer looking at a big screen just like if I could I would honestly live in a cinema I mean its got food (popcorn) drinks (soft drinks) desert (ice cream) toilets (toilets) just need some wifi and a bed and man you are set.. but yeah money prevents a lot of things or more specifically lack there of money haha lol :)

maybe future me will build it cmon future me you can do it

  • How will I play PlayStation if I don't have a TV?

  • The content produced these days is really only enjoyable on a 4K HDR enabled 55 ich+ TV with a sound system minimum. Binge watch Netflix on a 5 inch mobile screen with stereo headphones is really an injustice to the content.

  • still needs, it's integrated with the set top box together. And a group watching screen not like smartphone or VR mainly 1 wathing saying as a social networking tools too.

  • I did not have a TV for about 5 years, then I got tempted one boxing day special 5 years ago. I think I've used it 10 times since. A waste of money.

  • So basically you do not need anything because you have a smartphone?

How is a laptop compared to a 60 or 70" TV screen with a nice sound system?

  • TV means more like family time for me. Sit together and watch a comedy flick every weekend.

  • -3

Lol, TV is dead my brudda. TV is 4 tha folks 50+, stick to your laptop.

  • I haven't upgraded my TV in ages. Between the laptop mobiles and tablets nobody really needs one. Who wants to be stuck watching 1 channel when everyone wants to watch their own thing?

  • I can't take anyone seriously who would be ok with watching all their TV/Film on a freaking laptop. If you don't care about the experience even of that then you likely can't care about anything else in your life, you're just going through the motions without passion or curiosity and that's not the kind of person I want to associate with.
