I do not recommend Optus Mobile.

I moved from Virgin Mobile (their subsidiary) to Optus and in comparison, the customer service is appalling, service is slower (not sure how as I always presumed Optus traffic was given priority over Virgin) and this week they made a mistake where their system thought I had exceeded my monthly limit (but was actually at 2%)! which resulted in an auto 1GB for $10 order going through.

Just my two cents and I know they're all pretty diabolical with speed and customer service.

Weird ive had nothing but good words to say im currently on the sim only plan after coming off contract pay $35 and get 58gb of data never had a problem with speeds and one time I had a problem I live chatted and it was solved in minutes

Same here, been with them for years and have had only the best service.

        • I'll have to agree with cubmar. We moved houses recently and changing the connection to the new property was a nightmare. Each time I contacted them to fix something they just made another mistake. Took something like 6 times contacting them over the phone and on the chat and the situation is only just average atm. I didn't think they could de worst than Telstra, but they indeed are.

Boring, are we seeing anything similar to last year?

    • What happened last year mate ?

Im holding off for the S8 with 20gb for $49 which I missed out on ages ago.

      • +3

They had iPhone 8 for 59 with 20GB which is 80 or something even now. My contract expires next Feb so I hope Optus gives me a good plan to sign up for before that or else I am looking at other operators lol

        This happened last year

Edit : brokeunistudent beat me to it.

  • It seems it is on store or call center only. Contact Optus online chat, they only recognize the 12 months sim only plan has 10% discount.

Sad I missed the black friday deal, Huawei Mate 20 Pro or Pixel 3Xl +100GB cost 69, now is 84$/month.

  • I just received this deal via text.

  • meh!

  • What sort of speed is their 4G network?
I have been told by their support team that the max i will get for download is 12mpbs.
I went in store last weekend and they showed me it reaches over 100mpbs in a shopping centre.
    Who do I believe?
i am interested on their $60 for 200gb of data plan as my NBN will not be available until July 2019.

    • Speeds in my area are about 60-100mbs, near a tower or in the city I can get up to 180mbs, maybe worth buying a $2 optus sim and do a speed test :)

      • I did buy a prepaid sim last week and tested it out.
I put that prepaid sim card in their optus Huawei E5573 modem and the max I get is 9mbps.
That Huawei E5573 is 4G and I was hoping for over 2 digits download speed but was disappointed.
I also took that modem for a drive around town and the max i get is less than 30mbps. I am in WA.
Makes me wonder if their network is any good.

Some plans (I think it's called Wireless broadband) are capped at 12/1. The 4G network can go much faster.

A friend has an optus wireless hotspot that is capped at 12Mbps, but if he puts his mobile SIM in it it runs at full speed (around 80Mbps where he is).

      • I am looking at their BYO tablet sim plan, which is $60 per month for 200gb of data.
I wonder if that sim is capped at 12/1.

        • Not capped

          • @Shanp: Would they know if i pop the sim into a optus huawei E5573 modem and I will not be capped at 12/1?

            • @he88388: I have mine in a nighthawk m1. No dramas and 130mbps speeds. Been

              • @Shanp: May I ask, how much is your nighthawk m1?
Thinking of getting one and I can see its $199 at JB hifi.
                Sold out from Kogan.

                • @he88388: Didnt think JB sold them. $199 from JB is a great price. Got mine off gumtree. They sell 2nd hand around $150.

                  Also check ebay.

    • So was this targeted, or for everyone?
    • Does the $60 200GB mobile broadband plan drop to $54? Or is $60 already the discounted price?

UPDATE : Whirlpool discussion is saying that OPTUS internal system is only allowing 15% off Discounts at the POS - Perhaps mention this if you're buying instore. "Hey - my friend just got a 15% Discount off his/her order"…….

  • Just bought the month to month $60 plan in store and got a 15% discount - note it was at a optus owned store not a optus franchise - that might make a difference.

    • Hi hoopera, did you sign up for their wireless broadband plan? how's the speed?

      • Got the SIM running in a DLINK DWR 921 getting about 20/10 ish - that's fine - but it's located in a brick apartment surrounded by thick brick walls so I assume this is a big impact on speed/signal. Note: It doesn't work in iphone - it may work in Android but havent tested. This WP user has tested in various modems : https://whrl.pl/RfhHbW

The product is uncapped from Optus - so speed will depend on the device and your coverage. But 200GB for $51/m is excellent with no contract and as a pre-NBN or semi mobile option/holiday house/airbnb etc
