this may be cheap for the model etc, but how on earth could someone justify almost a grand for a gfx card? madness i tells you!

    • +15

thats the 'crazy' part in the title…

    • Don't get me started. A guy I work with is running SLI with 2 GTX590s. $1700 on GPUs seems a little insane to me considering you can build a whole pretty damn good PC for that amount.

      • +19

don't knock him. Maybe his heater is broken. Winter is coming, y'know.

      • +2

I don't see why you are getting neg voted. quad SLI support is horrible, Tri SLI at least does something useful.

the 6990 has 512mb more video memory which makes a lot of difference at high resolution, something you SURELY are doing when spending $1700 on video cards. Ati also has better quad GPU support, while Nvidia has better tri GPU support.

I would also doubt this guy has a heavily overclocked 2600K, something I would get before wasting my money on quad SLI.

$839 isn't a lot of money really. It's a lot of graphical power so I'd say $839 is worth it.

    • +6

Some people might spend $839 on a long-weekend trip that only lasts three days. Others might spend $839 on a graphics card that they'll enjoy using for a few hours every single day for the next year or two. If it's something you'll use and derive pleasure from every day, it's worth every penny.

      • +1

true, but 3 days seems much too long. i prefer to blow $839 on the pokies in an hour :)

        • +3

or $839 on a high class escort in 5 minutes

      • except that in 2 years you can buy something even more powerful for a quarter of the price :)

  • i guess if ya want to play shogun 2 in ultra specs
    u need this LOL

  • well, next cheapest in SI is $843 +ship, so you're saving a whole $4! although if you're the type to pay this much for one pc component, i would suspect supplier rep/location/delivery methods are more important than a paltry 4 bucks!

    • +14

I challenge you to find any of those actually having stock on hand

      • -1

        CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

        • Well?

  • true, and with delivery included you probably won't do much better in total amount anyway

Not everyone uses ultra fast graphics cards for gaming. They are increasingly being used for number crunching, such as 3D rendering (Maya with Furry Ball) or distributed computing projects (Seti@Home, Folding@Home, Distributed.Net, etc). Graphics cards have the power to speed up specific computing functions dozens of times using CUDA or Stream technology.

    • ummmmmmm….
      good point!

    • +4

What a GREAT idea… spend a grand on a graphics card to process your 0.00001% share of the Seti@Home project twice as fast. I am sure the world will be grateful for that significant contribution. LOL

      • I'm sure all these people are just wasting their time: http://www.gpucomputing.net

Not quite as "LOL" as you may think.

        • Each to their own… I am sure if I looked hard enough on Google I could find a worthy cause that didn't necessitate me buying a thousand dollar video card that will be worth 1/4 that in 12 months time. I know, I could donate it to feed an extended African family for a few years!

Anyway my post earlier, like this one, is called a J.O.K.E. - it's called humour!!! Not everybody in this world takes things so seriously :-)

    • though I do agree with you, wouldn't they be better off with a quadro or firepro with rendering…

  • +3

Ummm…. this doesn't quite match my needs. Do you have anything better? :P

    • +4

We usually only disclose these to long-standing customers, but I think we might have some TNT 2's out back…

      • bolderdash!
everyone knows nothing beats a Rage 3D…..let me know how many you want!

      • Give me 2x Voodoo2's and you've got a deal.. Apparently I need this new-fangled "SLI" to play fancy games.

      • If someone is hard up they can have my "Pure 3D 6meg" 3DFX Gen #1! with genuine external passthrough cable!

  • yes-buy 2 and go sli! ;)

  • yeah that should work.

but hey why stop there if you have the money to spare?
link many machines up to make a rendering…..farm.

  • Only the guys who neg a bargain for not being enough of a bargain would vote + on this. Well done.

  • +1

    for a crazy $839

lol crazy is the keyword there. people really pay that sort of money for a card?

    • +1

      Sad people yes.

      • If $839 blows your mind, check OCAU or Xtremesystems - your head will explode.

I mean what's so different to people modding cars, sticking giant wings and mag wheels on Excels etc?

        People have hobbies.

        • Cept you can pickup your girlfriend in your sweet car.
The only thing you'll pickup with a sweet computer is a box of tissues.

    • People have been buying these kinds of cards for years :)

I remember back in the day when an ATI 9800XT cost $700.

  • +2

I think everyone is missing the point of this bargain entirely..

For what the product is, and for what the price is, I think that this is a great bargain for someone who is a nVidia fan wanting to scoop up a great deal on the latest and greatest for what they have to offer.

This isn't about getting some other alternative which is cheaper - This is about this product being a bargain.

    Good stuff NetPlus :)

    • Just clarification for those who might not know

Its not that Netplus is selling them cheap, its that most other computer shops are ripping people off because the card is so new and people will pay that much.

Just like with the ati 6990 Netplus is selling them at the real price, that deserves a +vote imo :)

  • If you bought 2 x Overclocked GTX560ti like the ones at BlackTea Tech for $249 each, then bought a SSD for either your system or game drive with the savings, you would have a much faster machine. JMHO.

  • indeed, and just for reference, Black tea tech are selling the GTX590 Gigabyte version for $925 compared to $839 here!

  • wow, expensive!
