Haha, finally a credit card minimum spend that I can actually afford.

  • Is the bonus limited to new Amex cardholders only? If so, you should specify this.

    • New Card Member only.

      • See you again. Haha~

  • How long does it take to get approved and card delivered?

    • 2 Biz days to approve, if not instant.
5 Biz days to delivery, if not sooner

    • Typically instant approval
      3-5 days delivery.

  • This will be a useful card for people with current AMEX cards to switch to after April when they devalue transfer to Airline programs by 50%. Till then I would recommend getting the explorer or similar for a big points boost then swapping out to this card after.

    • No good for existing/recent card holders.

Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.

      • Not for the signup bonus more so the $0 annual fee. Using these for shop small and other AMEX promos without having to pay the $200/400/$1450 annual fee on most higher end cards.

      • I was under the impression that they distinguish between those who have AMEX against those with Bank AMEX.

Would those with AMEX that came with the Westpac visa bundle a few months back be eligible for the 10k points?

    • Yeah, already applied. This card is a little worse now too though, around 0.60% cashback instead of 0.71% or something. Still not too bad.

I believe there's a David Jones one which may still be better for more premium cards, gives 3 points per $1 on supermarket spend, inc. gift cards.

There is; it’s $99/year for the standard one and $299/year for the platinum one.

Source: Have the standard one (for free) and worked at DJs, where you were required to sell the card to customers

        • Yeah, seems like the better option. Also allows for conversion to Qantas points at .75/point. Supermarket spend basically equals 2.25points/$1 as far as I can see.

    • Can explorer etc be simply swapped to Essential by calling Amex or do we need to separately apply for Essential?

  • Worth it for the smartphone screen insurance alone I reckon. Has anyone made an AMEX claim for this before and can advise of the process?

$500 isnt enough to repair most, you would be better of getting insurance coverage

      • Got my samsung s8+ repaired at samsung for $200 recently

        • Samsung is about $300 I think

        • If it's an Apple the 3d touch make the price 600ish+ as it's embedded into the screen

  • What is a Membership Rewards Gateway® point worth compared to velocity or qantas

  • I used to have CBA Amex card which is recently cancelled, so firstly I’m eligible for the bonus points and secondly is it worth to have this card in comparison to velocity or Qantas Discovery with No Annual Fees Cards? Thanks…

You should make it more clear that you are asking questions.

Yes, I would assume you are eligible for this offer. They made a distinction between 'Bank Amex' and 'Direct Amex'. You are only excluded if you previously had a 'Direct Amex'.

Also, this cards terms look far better than the CBA credit cards at the moment. It gets 1 pt per $ , and has no annual fee. CBA would be worried if all their past reward credit card holders found out about this deal after their recent massive devaluation, and started switching.

  • Do I need to buy my smartphone with this card and how much is the excess fee for smartphone screen insurance?

  • AmEx point are 1 350 points = $10 gift card.

You wpuld think the bonus could be 13 500 points (i.e. enough for $100).

I don't think this is worth going through the process of getting an enquiry etc, for something only worth $75.

Especially when I might be looking at a home loan in the next year.

  • hmm is it better to apply through this deal or referral system?

    • Well this deal has expired so definitely referral.
