  • What evidence is there that any of these products actually 'improve your gut health'

    • Like most things in life. This stuff is probably a scam. But everyone likes to find something to think it makes them better. Be it religion or probiotics. A case of what ever helps you sleep at night. 😘😘

      • People have been making kefir and yoghurt for centuries. How is that a scam? Religion I get, but calling food making products a scam is a bit silly.

    • I think the claims are irrelevant - they sell things that some people may be interested in, such as yoghurt and kefir making items, kombucha making products, etc… Some people find Kefir and yoghurts are easier to digest than milk as they don't have lactose and many doctors recommend taking yoghurt during and after antibiotic courses to help rebuild gut bacteria (gut health). If it's not your bag just ignore it.

      • Totally agree with Kefir and yoghurt. But Not so sure about probiotics and other supplements that help grow your microbiome.
it's a growing area of research.
And if anyone is interested you can get your microbiome tested and then try to improve it and test it again.

        • +1

All cool - the bacterial strains in most good yoghurts are considered probiotic - it's just a term for a range of bacteria. I find the biggest problem are the claims people make about what probiotics can do or cure, but not with probiotics per se.

  • There's no good evidence for probiotics save in very specific medical situations ie post surgery in ulcerative colitis and with that only certain strains ie VSL3

    • No good evidence of what? Beneficial bacteria? It's just a term that classifies bacteria that is considered to be beneficial for proper gut function. Claims made by charlatans about cures are irrelevant. No different to bottled water being better for you than tap - but it's still water.

  • As in evidence for ANY benefit (mortality morbidity etc) save in very specific medical situations.

    • All good. I'll continue eating fermented foods and yoghurts as they make me feel good. Not trying to change your mind, nor do I believe they will stop me dying.

  • There is Definitely evidence that gut bacteria is very important for health.( I know from personal experience). But I'm not sure about the probiotic supplements. My GI says that high dose probiotic pills can actually kill other good bacteria. But thumbs up for fermented foods and a well balanced diet.
