Seriously tempted but the more I read about portable air conditioners (PAC) the more skeptics I become.

Single exhaust fan means negative room pressure (outside air drawn in), noise and limited cooling play a big part.

The problem for me is even though I’m an owner occupier, I live on second floor of a three storey apartment and apparently the building code changed in May this year making it difficult for setups like mine. I can’t simply put the outdoor unit on the balcony as ‘kids may climb it’ and the new spacing requirements block out a half of the balcony.

    • +8

When I used to rent, my portable was a life saver.
Yes the noise is loud however you either sleep and live through 40 degree heat or have some noise.
I chose a cooler night but everyone’s different

    • +3

Yep I've been reading up on reviews on portable air conditioners. General consensus is 50/50. You are right to be skeptical, as should others. I decided to take the leap and test it for myself, mainly because this is a bargain..

If you can afford it, go split system. But if portable is your only option, there's not much you can do

      • What about one of those window units?

        • I recentlt inherited one of these, it seems to work ok for a single room. Its as old as the hills but I saw one at Bunnings recently which was about 350 to 400 or in the ball park, not sure of the 30 year newer unit will be any better than my old Kelvinator

      • They work quite well in our 15sqm room but it's terribly inefficient. If your main priority is being cool then go for it.

    • +1

Negative room pressure is the main issue. The pump will always be on and the room never fully cools. You need to make an intake of some sort so that it sucks air from outside.

    • "building code changed in May this year making it difficult for setups like mine. I can’t simply put the outdoor unit on the balcony"

Would anyone even know ? I think the chances of a building-code-inspector walking past your apartment and then submitting a report are very low. The general public certainly aren't aware of such rules… :-)

    • +1

In a case like that you should mount it to an outside wall. It will cost slightly more than sitting in the ground/balcony, but only by $100 to $150 or so and you get to keep that balcony space which may well be worth more than that anyway. If you are there for a long time this is way better than a portable unit, but if a portable unit is all you can afford or you literally can’t install a split then It is better than nothing.

    • Can't you put it on the wall beside the balcony (so it can installed from the balcony without an EWP etc).

They are not too bad, but the noise is pretty bad.

I dunno if you can get portable splits in Australia but they are better than the ones that vent out the window.

      https://www.aircomfortcentre.com/shop/air-conditioners-porta…

      • We had a DeLonghi Super Pinguino 400 which is a portable split.
        Sold it before leaving WA.

        • I used to see them in the shops but haven't for a while although I haven't been looking, nothing in Australia came up on google shopping searching portable split ac.

  • Really tempted, this seems way better than the one at Aldi for $399.

  • where is everyone getting these discounted gift cards??

    • From the deals posted on ozbargain.

Bought mine 10 days ago. Got $350 worth for 19% off, bought exclusively for a portable air conditioner. I was betting on a big discount on portable aircons during boxing day. Now to decide what to do with the remaining $51 hmm

      • What're you gonna do with $51?

        • +1

Im thinking i should throw it out

          • @Iwilltakeit: You can sell them Ozbargain classifieds for a discount if you want.

    • You can still get some here tomorrow:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/425855
That will knock 10% off saving you $30.

  • +3

These things should only be considered if you absolutely have no alternative.

Keep in mind that for every cubic meter of cool air it pumps out into the room, it's pumping at least the same volume outside. That air that is pumped out has to be replaced by the hot air outside.

So let's assume the it's 35c out and your Ac unit is pumping out 22c air. The coolest temp your room will fall to is (35+22\2) 28.5c.

    • +1

Like your theory however most typical refrigerated ac’s pump out air at around 12c as it leaves the unit.

      • Ive owned many of these things….. Never seen anything like 12c. The best one I ever owned was a delonghi which was water cooled and put out air around 16-18c. Of course as the day wears on and the machine and room get hotter and even this isn't sustainable.

        • +3

Just checked the air output from the Aldi 4.1kw cooling portable unit with an infrared thermometer, it’s around 12c.

      • Temperature out of the air conditioner is dependent on ambient air. If you are drawing in 35 degree air the air conditioner will not put out 12 degrees.
ACs generally change the temp of air by 12-15 degrees, the hotter the ambient the less effective they become.

    • +1

I have had one of these (12,000 BTU model) for a couple of years.
It works quite well for me in a home office, taking it from 26+ to 23c quite quickly.

      It is pretty noisy though.

    • +5

I got a portable the other day, $50 on Gumtree. I have the unit sitting outside on the verandah and have ducted the cold outlet into the screen door and the air inlet from the screen door as well so that it is recirculating cold air from the house. Working really well like that and all the noise is outside too.

      • +4

Do you mind taking pics of your setup? I wanna see

        • +1

Man it's nothing to be proud of just yet, knocked it up in about 20 minutes on a hot day just to test the concept. I will redo it soon with a proper wooden inlet box and less cardboard and duct tape. I'd also like to insulate the hoses and put a larger aluminium hose from Bunnings over the original hose and the insulation I add to the outside of it.

It was easy on the model I got because it has two separate air paths for the compressor and condenser that are isolated from each other. Not sure how other models are set up.

        clever!

  • oh farrout i literally just bought one for $499

  • -2

Don't buy one you will be sorry. They don't work

    • +2

Well this is Kogan crap after all.

    • +1

I have had bad experience with mine as well. Circuit board blew off.. only used couple of times with the warranty period

    • I've had two from Kogan working for over 6 years. Modified to use an intake hose, making them much more efficient. One is starting to make grinding noises from the compressor motor but it has well and truly done its duty.

  • I was waiting for this till yesterday n bought one from catch.com.au for $515 :(

    • +9

You decided to make a purchase 2 days away from boxing day? oof

    • Are you gonna request for a refund ?

  • +1

Thing is (profanity) awful. I've had two and they were both DOA. Support is incompetent. So annoyed.

  • Off topic.
My friend donated this air con for me to get through summer however it doesn't come with the window kit and exhaust pipe.

Can anyone recommend me any places that I can purchases
those parts..or recommend any third party parts that compatible with this unit?

    Thanks

    • same here.. the one I bought 2 years back had the exhaust pipe sorta disintegerate. would appreciate a pointer on where to get another one.

    • +1

Bunnings has window and exhaust pipe kits.

      • I've never seen bunnings sell the type of hose that these come with - they're more rigid and can handle higher temperatures than the ones sold at Bunnings. You can find them on ebay.

  • Seems to be gone. I clicked on the link and it's back to $499.

    • +1

You have to apply the code at checkout. If you scroll down once on the page you can see the banner advertisement

  • If i install this on a sliding windows, is that mean I can't lock that window without removing the deal? Is it easy to remove the seal ?

    • +1

Yes can’t lock the window anymore but you could slide in a rod into the window rail to prevent the window from opening further.

      • Brilliant, thank you

  • +1

Bought this one exactly one year ago for the same price and wasn't happy with it because it is noisy. It was in the living and I couldn't hear the TV clearly unless I pump up the volume. So requested for a refund and and after a long battle of 2 months of sending emails got it refunded 299. If you are used to split system this wouldn't do any good but if desperate and no other option then it's your choice.

    • +2

I’m surprised you a refund due to noise. It’s pretty well known these are noisy, and turning up the tv sounds reasonable if you have it in your living.

  • +2

This coupon also works on the Vostok 4.1kw. it's rated a few db quieter and looks a bit easier to modify by adding an intake hose.

    • Does the vostok come with the option of attaching a hose to drain the condensation outside or do you constantly have to empty the tank? This would be annoying especially at night. I know the Kogan has the hose.

      • Click on the What’s In The Box section, it mentions drain hose. How often would you need to empty the 1litre?

Now my question, how does that drain hose work if the window is 400-500mm off the floor, does the unit pump the water out or does it need to be by gravity, meaning only good on window openings that go to the floor?

        • -1

Oh great. Picked up one of the Vostok.

As the volume of water builds and it has no where to go it will push the water out of the hose even though it is sitting higher than the ground.

  • +1

I purchased a portable a couple years ago and wouldn't do it again. They were noisy as hell, the tubing was ugly and it was drawing almost a kilowatt from the wall!

  • +6

Hi Guys, don't believe all the bad publicity. Of course they aren't as awesome as a split system but they do work on those extra hot days.

    • Thanks.

Good enough for a small office or bedroom? (Quote for ducted was $8k and not able to install a split)

      • Get a polo cool 6kw portable on sale or second hand, the best model available to man. You won't be disappointed. Research it.

  • Purchased 3 gift cards but for some reason unable to redeem at Kogan website. Leave it to Kogan to sell you gift cards and then be left unable to redeem.

  • -2

Ah yes, the perpetual motion machines of the airconditioning world. 4.1kw from a 2.4kw power point attached to a 3.8kw circuit breaker. It's a miracle of modern "Science" TM

  • Thanks OP. Just purchased 2 units ($299 each) and stacked it with Woolies 10% Kogan Giftcards ($600 worth for $540) which i purchased in store.

Total came to $540 out of pocket for 2 units.

I opted for the Vostok 4.1kW Portable Air Conditioner instead as its specs shows it is quieter than the Kogan branded one. Same same otherwise.

    Thanks.

    • Do you know if the Vostok has a hose for the condensation? I managed to cancel my Kogan one in time so if it also has a hose I will get the Vostok.

      • Click on the What’s In The Box section, it mentions drain hose.

Now my question, how does that drain hose work if the window is 400-500mm off the floor, does the unit pump the water out or does it need to be by gravity, meaning only good on window openings that go to the floor?

  • Thanks OP

  • Can anyone comment on how the window kit works for hinged windows? Live in a rental so need to be as least destructive as possible. Will it work for any hinged window size?
    Cheers

Props for helping out in the comment section. I can see you've researched well

Thanks :) Silently learned and saved thousands over many years thanks to the OzBargain community so thought it’s time to give back what I know/can.

    • Bought a similar AC unit a few weeks back (not that cheap sadly), got some foam cut from clark rubber, the two triangles for the sides and a long bit I cut the hole in for the exhaust vent which goes at the bottom opening of the window.
Some double sided tape and then winding the window closed to compress it a little and it's been fine so far.
Was able to run the foam under the chain that winds the window out.
More involved and more cost but I couldn't get hold of any of those other kit options from anywhere. Just another suggestion.

  • Thanks OP. Got it stacked with 10% off gift cards from woolies. Didn’t want to get the Vostok as I thought the vents would be less mobile / not swinging and the display not visible from distance. And will return the one from Aldi.

A lucky OzBargainer also gets a $5 referral credit :)

  • Thanks OP!

Just received my unit and pretty happy with it! Filmed the unboxing and impressions here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiTrq2-Wlko

    • Nice vid! Wasn't expecting it to be such high quality. Only feedback i can give is that the review part is a bit lacking, but since you've only just gotten the aircon, you couldn't really give it a detailed review anyways. From the sound of it, the air con works pretty good so thats nice.

    • Oh! Dave, you've got an unboxing channel too? I love your guitar tutorials!

    • Nice place how much do you pay to rent it monthly or weekly?

  • What's a good price to get some expert to come install one of these on a second storey small bedroom with a window.

The heat is getting really bad I might buy one and hope it arrives before end of summer and at least be prepared for the next one.

    • This is a portable air conditioner and doesn't need an expert to be installed. You just need to attach the window kit to the window and you're good to go.
