Looking at Getting New Phone, I Think $349 Is Most I Want to Pay

At moment I have an iPhone 5 and I am looking at getting a new phone as the screen is damaged, top left presses in and also I want something newer as with this phone I am starting to see apps not work with it as it is old.

I have seen a Nokia 6.1 at JB Hi-Fi on sale for $319.20. The 5.1 Plus is also on sale for $303 but the 6.1 would obviously be better right? Both Nokia prices are these prices because there is a 20% sale on Nokia phones until the 1st Jan.
I have heard some oppo phones are good, not too sure on them.
Samsung Galaxy J5 Pro which is $299, not sure if on sale or not.
Also, seen that Kogan is selling Nokia 8 for $349. Would it be better buying in Australian store?
I was thinking between the Nokia 6.1, one feature is android one which would give 2 years of guaranteed android updates, but I just read that it might not be a thing anymore. With the Samsung Galaxy J5 Pro, sounded like a good price phone.
I heard Officeworks pricematches Kogan, but Nokia 8 is not on the site anymore. Any other store pricematch Kogan?
So should I go with one of these or is there a better one?

    xiaomi mi8 lite

  • What mobile network is your service with?

    • Optus pre paid at moment. I stay on pre paid as I can charge $30 and if I don't use it all it will carry over when I have to charge again in 2 months.

  • I hear people talk about NFC a lot. Do many phones have this feature? I would not use it to pay and I don't know if anybody else I know has this in their phone.

NFC is used mostly for payments and very, very infrequently you would use it to transfer data between phones. But that almost never happens nowadays since you can email large files and pass small files like photos or video clips using instant messaging applications.

Only the lower tier, sub $300 phones generally drop NFC to keep the costs down. Over $300, most phones will have NFC as a feature.

      • Yeah that is what I was thinking about the other uses of the NFC chip, just easy enough to email or share on messenger.

    • I have used NFC for payments (on samsung s5, still a great phone IMO) . It is quite handy, can just pay like paywave, as if your phone is your card, just have to hold phone over card terminal for a second or 2. I certainly would have continued regularly NFC payments on paywave, but I don't use passcode or fingerprint or anything to lock phone, and app makes you have passcode etc turned on to continue using app. Still comes in handy, I went for bike ride other day, didn't have wallet with me and wanted a slurpee at 7/11, did NFC thing, then after purchase went into settings to turn passcode phone-lock off (at which point get notification NFC payments can't be used with phone-lock off).
I have just switched to samsung s7 (which is maybe around $350 new these days) and s7 does not work as good/strong for hotspot streaming netflix from tv's . Not sure if it is worse reception or worse wifi transfer rate, which is causing the worse hotspot tranfer speeds (and subsequent blocky and frozen netflix on tv).

  • Huawei Y9 - $330 (10% off on eBay, then 10% on for GST)

  • If you were mostly happy with your iPhone 5 how about upgrading to the iPhone 6? $397 for the 32gb gold from Officeworks or cheaper on eBay/other sites. Bigger screen and Touch ID is a decent upgrade. It’s a few years old now but from what people are saying online runs well on iOS 12 (the current version)

Yeah it was good, but I am thinking maybe another brand phone could be better. I dont have any paid apps and any music I have bought on itunes, which is not much, I can convert on computer and put on phone if I wanted to that much.
Also, with no more updates with the iPhone 5, how long would it be until the iPhone 6 has the same happen.

      • with no more updates with the iPhone 5, how long would it be until the iPhone 6 has the same happen.

Exactly, iphone 5 is still an OK phone, but apple chose to stop updates to force people to buy newer more expensive model. Will soon do it to the s6, and so on. And absolutely no way around it, even if you jailbreak iphone, still won't be able to install newer update required for some apps.
Android phones, if for some reason manufacturer stops issuing sufficient update to run latest apps, you can usually root and mod phone fairly easily and install latest android version that way. Many people do this straight away anyway, root and mod their new android phone, install latest android version without bloatware.

  • My brother has just showed me the Huawei Nova 3E 64GB, which has good reviews and is also part of the 20% sale on ebay.
How is allphones_online ebay store? Are they reliable? Also, if something happens to phone just send it back and they take care of problem?

So these are the phones I am now looking at:
    Nokia 6.1
    Nokia 8
    Samsung Galaxy J5 Pro
    iPhone 6
    motorola g6 plus
    xiaomi mi8 lite
    Huawei Y9
    Huawei Nova 3E 64GB

Is android one a feature I really need to worry about? I don't think all phones would have it but these phones would be good for a few years at least before the android updates stop coming, right?

    • The Nokia 6.1 (2018), 6 Plus, 7+ and 8 Sirocco (not to be confused with the predecessor, Nokia 8) run Android One. The Xiaomi Mi A2 and Mi A2 lite also run Android One.

The benefits of Android One is basically all the phones running it will feel and look the same, & since they lack any carrier customization (no bloatware preinstalled) they'll run better at the beginning.

Samsung, Xiaomi (Redmi series), Huawei and Motorola all have custom Android skins (i.e the manufacturer is the one that rolls out the updates after they test it internally). Of the above listed, Motorola is one of the few brands that leaves the phone at 'almost' stock so their phones will look and feel like Stock Android, while most other manufacturers typically load the phone with a fairly amount of software gimmicks and add-ons.

I don't recommend mid-end Samsung phones since they typically are either: too expensive, run a weak processor and have too many features that bog the phone down.

The Huawei 3e looks decent, but it faces pretty stiff competition from Moto and Nokia, and especially it's biggest Chinese rival, Xiaomi.

I recently got the Huawei 3i which can be had for under $400 and is a great phone, really premium feel to it. I see no sense in stumping up for a "flagship" at way over $1k or the alternative of being stuck on a 2 year plan to have one when it will be usurped by newer models within a few months. Not when the mid range outright options are now so good.

I'm a fan of Xiaomi too but you can get the Huwawei models here with local warranty which swung it for me this time. Was seriously considering the Mi 8 lite as my previous experience with Xiaomi has been very good. I'd imagine its pretty similar to the Huawei models both in capability and build quality and their operating systems are also very similar to each other.

3i is also dual sim which you don't normally get here. Very useful if using the phone overseas as you can stick a cheaper local sim in while retaining your main one.

    • Not sure how long each of these phones been out for. Any to likely stop getting updates soon?

Oppo A73, dual sim which is very handy for overseas trips and well priced!!. I have an Apple SE which is great, and the Oppo seems much like an Apple product to use. Just hope Apple bring out a replacement for the SE at a sensible price point - IF they are smart. Otherwise it's over to another Oppo later on.

  • I have the nokia 8 it's a good phone i have gone to upgrade but not a fan of the rear facing finger print scanner on a lot of newer models.

  • You've got bad timing. Yesterday I would've said 3i.

  • Big fan of the Xiaomi A1. Does everything I need it to with Google interface and picked it up for under 250 delivered.

  • I got a new original Google pixel for $299 of eBay. Lovely phone, fantastic camera, fast,
    And has nfc.

    Well worth it

  • Probably not easy to say but is one phone better overall from the phones we have talked about here?
Needs to perform well and not slow down with multiple apps open, good battery and a camera that can take decent photos.
Everytime I look at reviews I am seeing good and bad on every phone and I am just making it harder for myself to decide.

    • Every phone that doesn’t run iOS tends to slow down after a while. Ain’t nobody got time for dat. Stay with iOS.

    nokia 3310

  • Nokia 7.1 or Xiaomi Mi A2, both are slightly above the budget, but they are both new phones (2018 August) and are guaranteed updates for 2 years, both on Android One.

Just make sure its a 2018 Android One phone and it will update for 2 years.

    • Nokia 7.1 looks good, but read some review on battery not really good.
Really annoying trying to go by reviews and every phone has something bad about it, I just can't decide what I want. Think the only thing I have decided is not to get the Samsung phone.

    • So would you say the Nokia 7.1 would be better than all of the phones listed?

  • I think I am narrowing it down to:
    Huawei Nova 3E
    Nokia 6.1
    Nokia 7.1

These phones are also at JB Hi-Fi and I just remembered I have a voucher for there.
With JB Hi-Fi if you can't click and collect does that mean it is not available in store? Because the Nova 3E is delivery but not click and collect, if I was thinking of getting this that I would try get in store and price match as Harvey Norman has it for $317.

  • oppo A73
    $100 below your budget
    freakin great phone.

  • Me also i prefer tops 5 inch..its so hard! S7 looks nice but ebay seems a little shonky do they still sell S7 new?……then i thought of iphone 7 i dont want Chinese stuff Xiomi etc either.

    • Pixel

      • I ended up going with Nokia due to band 28.

  • If you are looking for Dual SIM with Band 8, 28, as well as extra SD card slot, best value for money (especially if you can find them used) is the Nokia N5.
