Agora 7" Android Tablet - Pre-Order Price Currently @ $146 + Shipping Cost

251

Mod: Please note that Kogan changed it's specs for this tablet from 1024x600 to 800x480. For refunds, please contact [email protected] or see comments below

Firstly; People should be aware that Kogan's pricing increases over time due to "liveprice"
"LivePrice allows you to purchase a product while we are in the process of manufacturing or shipping."
The product is now $153, but will rise incrementally to $189 (full purchase price) if you buy on 27 May.

"If you change your mind about purchasing a product with LivePrice, don't worry! You can request a refund at any stage while the product has a LivePrice, and our 7 Day Money Back Guarantee applies after a product is delivered"

Found this on a site I regular for reviews/updates.

Cheapest android tablet I've seen for a while that is actually decent!

The Kogan Agora 7" Tablet PC Features:

• Android 2.2 Operating System

• Android Market with Thousands of Apps & Games (inc. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube)

• Built in Wi-Fi

• Read & Write emails with the Gmail or Email app

• Supports 720p HD Playback

• HDMI® video output (HDMI® Cable Included)

• 1 x USB

• 1 x microSD Slot

• Desktop Widgets inc. Weather, Calendar, Clock, YouTube

• Media Player - Watch Movies, Listen to Music, Browse Photos

A really worthwhile buy if you're in the market.

Yes, I know it does not come with the new Android 3.0 OS which is only for tablets, however for a cheap tablet as such with a decent processor, this is still a great deal for those who are in the market for one.

  • is cheap…but i think the other important thing to note is that the website lists that they anticipate to start shipping on 27th May, so there's a bit of a wait.

    Kills it for me.

      3 hour batter

      • The Telepad 7C has 4hrs battery (manufacturer claim) on 3000mAh battery. The Agora should get an hour more. It's all guess works at this moment until someone get their hands on the real thing.

        Discussion over at Whirlpool.

        http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1679231

        [Edit:]
Whirlpool said Kogan people confirm the battery is around 3hrs. I'm still hopeful they are wrong. :) The same way the said to go ask Google for the source code.

Having a capacitive touchscreen at this price is astoundingly good, I think.

      • Agreed, this is what I have been waiting for, a cheap tablet with a capacitive touchscreen.

    • wait a minute,

      Screen Resolution: 1024 x 600?

      why d page shows
      Screen Resolution: 800 x 480???

      what's going on here?

  • capacitive screen as well!
Not a lot of internal memory but has a card slot for user stuff (pics, vids)
Just have to keep an eye on app sizes as you install.

    • +1

4Gb would be OK for Apps, they're generally pretty small (apart from GPS Nav Apps).
Just need to make sure all your content was on the External Card more than anything.

    • and also the songs and movies you put into it

      4GB is EASILY used up

      • +1

That is what the SD card is for. 4GB is fine now that you can install a lot of apps to SD card.

$16.90 delivery fee to Sydney….. ouch.

  • Did it get a good review??? Tempted….

    • Here is some info about it here

      • Thanks… I can't get to that site from work, but will have a look later.

    • It hasn't been released yet.. so no reviews are available.
Specs wise, it looks very decent.

    • The early prototype has been reviewed by a few tech sites. Spec wise, the final product seems a vast improvement on the prototype.

  • +2

I've changed the title to state 'Pre-order price currently @ 153'

That should warn most people that it is for an item that has not yet been released - sufficient?

    • +1

people should be aware that Kogan's pricing increases over time due to "liveprice"…
"LivePrice allows you to purchase a product while we are in the process of manufacturing or shipping."
hence the product is now $153, but will rise incrementally to $189 if you buy on 27 May.

      • Can you preorder it and then cancel the order between now and May 27? Certaintly would be good if something better comes along.

        • +1

If only clicked the liveprice button I would have found my answer:

If you change your mind about purchasing a product with LivePrice, don't worry! You can request a refund at any stage while the product has a LivePrice, and our 7 Day Money Back Guarantee applies after a product is delivered.

      • cheers bud - i'll add that into my description.
that's the problem with posting deals like this - so much to cater for, but still a good bargain imo.

  • OK - hopefully added all necessary details into the description to give people a fair warning of the product and purchase scenarios.
Thanks for the comments neil and battler. :)

  • +2

again, this kind of price make $949 purchase of ipad seems irrational. but….

    • +3

You couldn't be half as smug about owning one if it only cost you $150…

  • If this thing ran Honeycomb I'd get it in a heartbeat.

  • +1

I don't understand where people are getting the 3 hour battery life comment from?
I can't see that on the Kogan website anywhere..
Logically, comparing the specs of that tablet against others similar, you could expect roughly 6hour+ depending on how heavy the usage is. a 3600ma battery isn't tiny, but it isn't the biggest

    • I agree.

Does this thing have GPS built in?

      • Not according to the specs list, but it does have the google marketplace and I thought that to qualify for that the devices had to have gps. shrug

      • Don't think it has GPS built in. Nor any mobile WAN connectivity, which makes it on-par with those $100 Chinese made Android tablets, except good CPU, capacitive touch screen, high res LCD and Australian warranty.

    • If you send them email or chat they will let you know the battery life only 3 hours

  • +1

What about the better-speced Galaxy Tab? It's lowest at $360 now, and give it till by the time Agora comes out, Galaxy Tab's price might be lower say, below $300?

    • +1

I think you'll find the price on the Galaxy tab is clearance before the new models
(rather than go lower, they will just sell out)
Even then - $300-360 vs $153-$189 for this one.
(yes you get more with the samsung - but if you are price sensitive, double the price for a couple extra features may not be worth it) Especially if you are treating them as semi-disposable appliances

    • Not likely. The current price will likely stand until the warehouses are empty, then the model will be replaced by a more expensive, newer version.

      • Yeah I agree that for the price of the Agora it is very worth it for people who do not need the 3G and a second camera.

But I am not sure whether the Galaxy Tab will be discontinued though..

    • Oops I think I should be replying to myself instead..

  • So is this worthwhile for a e-reader with some extra features like facebook, etc (when near a wireless network)? Certainly find this price more reasonable than $550+ for an iPad2 to do the same thing?

    • No it makes a good ebook reader. No review about the screen quality though, but personally for reading books I prefer 7" over 10".

      • Yeah at first I thought 10" would be better, but then when I placed it next to my phone (which I currently use) 7" is a good size and 10" would be too big to carry around in my pocket I reckon.

        • 7" perfect for epub files but not for pdfs / magazines.

        • Yeah.. it will be harder to look at comics too on a 7". But portability with it is definitely true compared to 10"

  • Update to the website:

1st Production Run of this Tablet SOLD OUT at 5.52pm on 14th April 2011.

So it's sold out now - anyone ordering from here on out will get it in the second production run. Presumably this will be a long time after May.

    • Well the expected delivery dispatch is now the 30th of May, so only 3 days?

      • I coulda sworn that section was blank when I last looked.

But yeah, looks like the 30th now, so bugger all difference in the long run.

        • and now its back down to $139…

  • i got one. suppose for that price u cant go too wrong.
…if it is real bad i always can return it within 7 days i suppose.
looks actually very similar to Suli SL-7i: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/SULI-SL-7i-ANDROID-2-2-TABLET-PC-SLAT…

    • Except that Suli is only 800x480 which is crap.

The screen resolution and quality is paramount on a tablet.

    • Yeah.. just the front design look similar. But comparing the ports and headphones etc. the placements are different.

  • +2

love the concept of 'liveprice' even if im not interested in the product :) would love if more places did this

  • +1

Seems like there is a new batch starting at $139!

    • You can't really go wrong for that sort of money considering the actual specs that count are very good on this - screen-res, CPU, and RAM are all good.

      • Yeah it's typical, I've just bought a second hand Nook Color for $260 and this looks at least as good!

        • Wow the NC is holding its value quite well. At least NC has official CM7 and HoneyComb builds ready to roll, and IPS LCD, which I highly doubt the kogan has. The kogan is an unknown quantity right now, but for a bit over half the price you paid its well worth a gamble.

  • +3

This is just a rebadge of the Telepad 7C Cortex A8. Yes, this is a cheap-ass chinese tablet and you get what you paid for. Just don't expect this to have the same screen quality as the Samsung Galaxy Tab. personally, I would rather paid a bit more and get the Samsung.

    • Wow you are right about that one. It looks like the Agora and Telepad are both the same thing!
But for Telepad the screen resolution is just 800x480 and Agora's 1024x600?

I wonder if Kogan replaces the screen or whether the info given for Agora's screen resolution is true or not..

    • Here's an unboxing article about the Telepad. Price apparently is at $200+:
      http://mp4nation.net/blog/2011/04/unboxing-the-telepad-7c-co…

      • This is exactly the one I am referring to but wasn't sure if it's OK to put up the mp4nation link here. I've bought many many of these chinese 'gadgets' over the year mainly for playing movies when I commute to/from work so I have a pretty good idea what to look out for and which to avoid. As far as tablets go, I'll stick with the known and trusted brand.

    • I recently asked a colleague at work to get me a Nook Color when she go on holiday. This changes everything. It's equal to the NC in every way except for the community support. The NC is already running Honeycomb. I have my fingers crosses for someone to release Honeycomb and future updates for the Agora.

Wow, almost a twin, definitely a sibling with the Telepad 7C.

      http://mp4nation.net/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_inf…

The upside is the Agora has better screen and battery.

      • This changes everything.

I see what you did there.

Seriously though, for this kind of outlay you would be silly to get a NC over this. I wish I'd waited, although I'm very happy with my nook for what I paid all those (5) weeks ago.

Said it once and I'll say it again, things are moving very fast in the Android tablet wars.

    • Thanks for sharing and there is no problem posting links here. Kogan Agora Tablet does indeed look the same as Telepad 7C, except the screen resolution and that Kogan logo at the back.

  • Thanks OP. You can't go wrong with $156…if not happy just return within 7 days.
I'm sure there will be a way to upgrade this to Honeycomb. I'm though more interested in upgrading to Gingerbread.

Yesterday was Kinect, today is Android Pad, Whats tomorrow? Thanks God there is OzBargain!

  • Love my ipad 1st gen. But can't say no to this price :)

  • OMG. There's actually quiet a bit written about this baby already.

    http://www.google.com.au/search?client=opera&rls=en&q=kogan+…

  • Can I watch xxxtube on this?

  • +1

Can I watch youtube on this?

    • Assuming that it has access to the Android Market, yes, you just use the Youtube application.

  • -8

Would be insane to buy this garbage, atleast get the Optus MyTab for $199 with included 3G.

    • +2

But MyTab uses a resistive touchscreen. Which means less responsive and cannot do multitouches (pinch-to-zoom)..

      • Not to mention:

        480 x 800 pixels (versus 1024 x 600 )
Inferior processor (600mhz Qualcomm versus a 1ghz Samsung)
        Android 2.1 only
Only 512 mb of internal memory versus 4GB
        No HDMI

I'm not sure why this deserves a neg, especially when the MyTab is not that much better either in terms of build quality and it costs more. The CNET review also notes that it's not capable of playing back HD 720p media files due to lack of CPU grunt.

The lack of 3G is the only reason why I'm not buying it. I would love to get one just for the sake of reading eBooks and PDF's though.

        • No one knows how good this thing will be. Will the LCD screen be good quality? Kogan quoted their TVs as 120Hz capable - even though it does not display 60Hz properly (I doubt 120Hz support will be any better - if not worse). They also mentioned their TV panel is good quality… but I don't agree.

It is also odd that wireless N support is not there.

  • +1

Dammit, bought at $153 and now the price is $141?? Gonna cancel and order again. I can wait 3 days to save another 12 bucks.

    • Haha I guess you are right on that one. I wonder what will happen though if the previous buyers that bought at a price higher than $141 decided to do that too…

  • At any rate, we can't go so wrong with this price rite?

  • You know.. after looking at Engadget's gallery of the Agora (http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/14/kogans-agora-internet-tv-…) in enlarged photos, I realised that the home screen display on the Agora is photoshopped.

And even by looking at the photos at Kogan's own website you can see that in the photo of the Agora the app drawer icon is right in the center aligned with the home button there on the right. But when you look at the photo of the Agora taken from the side, the app drawer icon on the screen is no longer aligned with the home button..

So yeah this is just a side note that I think I am pretty sure it's photoshopped but I wonder why Kogan did that?

    • Looks better and they probably don't have a real unit to take photos of yet?

  • +2

I just ordered one earlier this morning, but went back to the website recently to check a few of the specs, and noticed that it has changed to 800x480. Damn!

It definitely said 1024x600 before right?

I think I'm going to have to cancel the order.

    • +6

      Wait, what!

      This changes everything, again.

    • +2

      here comes the refunds

      • How and when can we get a refund here? Just contact them? Thanks in advance.

What a dirty bait it is.

    • -3

why didnt anyone see this coming? the galaxy tab is stuck on that resolution too

it is because of the limitation on Android 2.X

and Honeycomb 3.0 was made to address this problem.

      • U must be kidding man. The Tab's resolution is 1024x600, not 800x480.

        • +1

Yeah its like wtf? Dudes been drinkin too much coolaid

        • whoops sorry got the specs mixed up

  • +1

i got a screen shot with the original specs, not that I think it will help. Personally its a bait and switch as far as I am concerned.

  • +1
  • nah, probly just a typo… kogan is not a newbies… we all should query this more at the beginning, since all the "similar" tablets china made on ebay has 800*480 only.
    poor kogan…:)

  • Yup, called them and spoke to sales. Confirmed screen res is only 800x480. She also said all buyers will be notified by email.

If you want to cancel, send an email to [email protected].

Too bad… I was looking forward to getting mine, but with a screen res equal to my phone (Desire), I just don't see the point.

  • What an EPIC Failure

    I just cancelled my order

  • +1

Hmmm they dropped bluetooth out the specs as well.

    • +2

So now a bait without any doubt.

      • +3

yeah next wil be the screen changing to resistive.

  • I wouldn't waste my money on this. Recently I bought a Chinese Tab (i.e same as this) and returned it when the Galaxy Tab dropped to $360.
These devices look good at face value but they have no 3G no GPS generally no bluetooth. Quite buggy ROMS, poor Wifi reception and pretty bad battery life. If you add it all up the Galaxy Tab is well worth the extra $200.
Unless of course you just want a toy to play with.

    • I just laugh at the people who bought one of these purely based on value for money, and hypes. Just to add to my previous comments, here are some of the issues you are likely to encounter with these chinese tablets:

Buggy ROM (as per Gimme said).
      Battery doesn't charge/hold charge.
Difficulty reloading firmware coz the manufacturer's utility tool you need to use is all in chinese.
      Poor Wifi
      Really poor screen viewing angle.

  • What is all the fuss about this Kogan tab, it DOES NOT HAVE 3G so is next to useless as a tab, unless you are always within a wifi hotspot.

    • +1

thats a personal opinon based on your usage, I wont be taking mine outside the house so for me, 3G doesnt matter.

      • why not use a laptop?

      • wait Apple called and slammed the millions of iPad wifi only sales in your face
        Does it hurt?
Enough is enough ..I have had it with these mofo tablets on the mofo planet.

lol jk…portability and ease of use

  • absolutely not happy with how Kogan conviniently made the mistakes about the resolution and BT. Bought it last night, and cancelled it today.

  • How long does it take to get confirmation that Order is Cancelled from kogan?
