Why wouldn't you? These give a lovely shave.

      • +8

Can confirm - I haven't found anything that comes close to a DE razor from a cartridge or electric razor. And it's so cheap too, blades are sub-50c if buying in bulk.

        • +2

Blades are often around 20c for good quality blades, its often worth buying a 100 pack.

        • +1

Where do you buy blades from? Share some tips thanks.

          • +7

@xxxx84: If you're starting out, look for a sampler pack with a bunch of different brands to try. Something like this. It will cost more than a straight 100 pack, but it's still a cheap way of finding which blades you prefer.

            • +2

@Spam Service: Good advice. I trialled quite a few until I settled on blades that suited my face.

Also, some blades pair better with particular razors. In my case, super sharp blades like Feather's work better in mild razors.

Some of the more popular blade choices for new starters and experienced people alike include Astra, Personna (Google 'Lab Blues'), and the Gillette 7 O'Clock range)

            • @Spam Service: Thanks heaps man !

            • @Spam Service: What about this pack from Beard and Blade? Same price, but you get 60 blades.

          • +4

@xxxx84: @xxx84 everyone is different but my preferred DE blade is Astor.

Astor are usually about $18 for 100 blades.

I also like feather, which are usually about $30 for 100 (or $5 for 5 if you’re caught short)

You didn’t ask but… Depending on your skin type and stubble courseness (is that a word), 100 blades will last you between 1 year and 3 years. I change mine weekly on a Sunday out of habit, but others change blades anywhere between 4 days and 2 weeks.

            • +1

@thedragon: My skin type isn't very sensitive, because I don't normally get irritation, and my hairs not thick. So, I guess 100 blades will last quite long for me :)

But thanks man, I will definitly will try Astor too as I am trying to get into this traditional shave!

            • @thedragon: "Coarseness" is a word.

          • +1
          • @xxxx84: I buy my blades here - I buy in bulk to save money and 200 blades lasts me for years!

            https://www.mensbiz.com.au/feather-double-edge-safety-razor-…

      • I have a couple of Fatip safety razors coupled with Muhle blades an they are great.

    • +6

Heaps cheap mate. Spend $5 on shaving last year.

      Also better for environmental waste.

    • +4

Worth it for me, as my beard is so thick I get razor burn from regular and electric razors.
Shaving the old fashioned way, I never have to worry about skin irritation.

      • +3

+1 to that, since switching to a DE razor & brush set I've had far less irritation, too. Plus, I really enjoy the sensation of using the brush to lather, it feels nice on my skin.

    • +1

Just bought a Merkur 34C for Xmas.

      • +1

        Any deals on this razor?

      • The 34C was my first razor before I purchased the 37C which I feel gives an even better shave. It is marketed as being a more aggressive razor but as long as you are careful you should be fine.

    • Once you hit puberty you'll understand.

  • +2

Safety razors are the Ozbargainer's way to go. Got myself a Merkur Futur clone on Aliexpress a while back for $15 and works great. Adjustable too!

  • Thanks, really wanted to try this. Got one.

  • Thanks, I wanted a new brush.

    • Get s badger hair brush

  • +2

Safety razors are the best. Easy shave, cheap af

  • Can anyone help if it's worth spending any more money to get something else/ better? Send you can spend a fair bit and different blades or adjustable blade settings in the handle.

Also wasn't planning on getting a brush and just using bottle stuff still.

    • +4

It's always good to start cheap and work your way from there. I started with a modest kit back in 2012 and was hooked from the very first shave. My collection would draw the wrath of Ozbargainers so I won't delve too much into that :)

Everyone's skin and beard is different so it's a bit of experimenting to find a combo that works for your face. The only bit of advice that I would give is this - consider purchasing a brush that is made from synthetic "hair". They are cheap, don't need to be broken in, use less soap, and are far easier to use.

    • +2

the brush + lather is at least 50% of what makes a good shave, maybe as high as 70%. Don't skimp on that for the sake of a fancier razor, all the razor needs is to have a bit of weight to it, the blade you put in it makes more difference.

    • Totally agree with both comments above.

I started with this razor and I really liked it which made me want to seek out better razors just "because". Have myself a Merkur Progress, Futur clone, vintage Gillette Fatboy and some some others. For some reason I still prefer this razor loaded with Feather blades (I've tried a lot of blades - for something less aggressive I don't mind the green Gillette 7 o'clocks), its simple and has a good weight to it. If I find a good bargain I do have my eye on the Feather AS-D2 though….

But as for brushes…. I really like how easy it is to whip up a really nice lather with my silvertip badger brush. And that really does make a big big difference.

In fact I would say first stick to your old 2/3/4/5/6/7/8 blade razor and start with learning how to make some really nice shaving cream. Get a silvertip badger brush and a tube of proraso to start with.

  • +6

Just a small tip for new players.

Boar brushes require a break in period of about 20 - 30 shaves before reaching their peak. After this time they will soften up and give up the lather easier. So don't be too discouraged at the start. Also prior to using, wash the brush with shampoo and warm water to get rid of the smell.

Numerous forums dedicated to wet shaving are a good source of information.

  • Would this be appropriate if it's just used to line up beards?

    • Most definitely although a cartridge razor wouldn't be a bad way to do a small task like this.

  • Can I use it for shaving my head? Somehow I’m very sceptical about this.

    • Yes. Look on Youtube.

  • Any tips on how not to cut yourself open with these?

    • +6

Don't "press down" or apply pressure like you would with a cartridge razor. Go with a light touch and let the weight of the razor do the work.

      • Cheers fellas.

        • up down. never side side.
          - Mr. Miyagi

actually, just down is probably better.

    • +1

Watch some youtube videos on technique. After that, it's just practice with a steady hand. After a few shaves you'll have a very comfortable close shave. The right blades also help, try a few different brands.

  • +3

Double Edge Safety Razor with 20 Derby Blades for $14 delivered on Amazon Oz (with Prime).

    • Better? Worse?

      • Bought one and used it the other day can't complain. Did cut myself a couple of times tho haha. Probably due to applying a bit too much pressure. Got a nice shave in the end however. It is a bit unnerving the blades don't mess around haha.

      • +1

Derby's are nice starter blades but they don't last long. The razor is probably made in China.

        • +1

Sadly there are fake Derby blades out there, I got a bunch of them and they were terrible and I had to throw them out.

    • +1

I got this during lightning sales for 10 bucks it's comparable in quality to my muhle r89 or Edwin Jagger

Very impressed for the price. I use feathers though and didn't use the derby's

    • I've just received mine today, pretty hefty (weighs 85.6gr), great handle, definitely more comfortable in hand due to longer handle compared to the Wahl combo.
Combine this razor with cheap shaving brush from Price Line or Big W, and Palmolive Classic Shave Cream https://www.amazon.com.au/Palmolive-Lather-Shave-Cream-Regul… for a cheap as <$25 shave set!

      • I still love using Palmolive shave stick, lasts ages. Though it's getting more difficult to find it now.

  • +2

Remember to keep your blade in Vodka to keep it fresh after you clean and dry your razor!
They seem to last longer for me that way!

    • +13

At less than 5 cents per blade, drink the vodka and change blades once a week to save money

      • Changing it once a week is what I'm doing, but I'm definitely noticing a difference between using the Vodka and not.
Not really a "Money saving" tip more of a not having microorganisms on your blade tip for a cleaner shave.

I do however use a Carbon Steel blade rather than Stainless but have also done the same with Feather SS blades. :)

  • +7

Last time I made a comment about using safety razors in a Gillette post I got downvoted!!

  • So how much of a difference would getting a better handle make rather than buying this one, or is this actually quite good?

    • +2

The handle, or razor makes a big difference, some have different angles, materials and some are adjustable.

Its also difficult to say as everyone is different and you may have better results with some over others, making it very hard to go by many reviews of DE razors.

Best to give low cost DE razors a go first to see if its right for you.

Also the blades are like the handles, and will also vary.

Good to also try with a sample pack of different blades.

  • worth getting if you are only growing partial but very coarse facial hair?
always wondered about DE razors, but thought it was more suited to those with full facial hair.

    • +1

perfect for thick hair, because a) the blades hold up better to it in the first place and b) are very cheap to replace at around 20c each.

      • can these be used with the saving gels ?

        • +1

Yes but try a soap or cream. Much better than gels.

  • This is an excellent buy for people changing over from cartridges.

  • wont let me put in code because "seller has already offered discount" any tips? stuck on $29.98

    • It just worked for me, not sure why it wouldn't for you

    • There are 2 sets on eBay from the same brand and same store $29.95 and $29.98. Check which one.

  • So are so many blade brands, which one you guys suggest?

    • https://www.connaughtshaving.com/samplepack.html The popular and Gillette brands sample packs are very good and a great price at 8 British Pounds. The 350 blades in Gillette pack is probably an error.

      Lord sample is also good.

    • Astra (the yucky green packaging_ Very face friendly and sharp and smooth!

  • +3

be a true cheap arse and get the qshave razor blades 21 for 100 which are actually american personna blades last about 8 shaves. Better to also get the QSHAVE Razor which is a knockoff of a germal razor the Merkur Futur https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Men-Double-Edge-Safety-Shavi…

    • Wow, that looks amazing, I have a Merkur Futur, its a very heavy razor, how is the QSHAVE weight wise? The price looks very good, and build looks very much like the Futur.

      • i bought the QShave a year ago, as my first safety razor and i like it.

just weighed it on the kitchen scales and its about 80-90g with blade fitted. i'd be curious how that compares with the Merkur.

        • Merker is 125g according to the internet.

      • The patent for the Futur has expired, which is why there are many clones from various brands. Shaver shop sells clones too.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Wahl-Butterfly-Safety-Razor-…

new traditional brabers or is it worth the extra $10 for the butterfly?

i prefer the matte black look but the butterfly seems easier to change out blades…

  • Don't buy pig brushes.

    Buy badger.

  • +1

Something about taking a little bit of time to do this every second day is relaxing. A chance to slow down once and while. Never gone back since starting 2 years ago

  • +1

Check this Wahl razor for $20 after discounts.

    • Thanks!! OP listing was sold out, so I got this one

  • My grandpa used to shave with this type of set every day. His hands would shake a lot, but he never used to cut himself. Good times.

  • This deal makes me want to search my granddad’s belongings to find his shaving set. Nostalgic :/

  • Any recommendations or which products are you currently using for pre and post shave products?

    • +1

Taylor of Old Bond Street is the business for shaving cream. I also use Bluebeard's Revenge Preshave Oil if I have a bit of a growth.

I have no opinion on post shave … I tried the Bleubeard's revenge cream, and the Nivea sensitive cream. I didn't like either, but I think that's because they are creams. I'm currently using Nivea aftershave from Woolies. I'm soon to try Proraso, and I also just bought an alum stick.

  • +3

I read this thread and ended up spending over $200 at Beard and Blade. D'oh.

  • I have really sensitive skin, break out in rash/pimples/ingrown hairs…any thoughts if this would be suitable? I'm using aldi cartridges at the moment

    • +1

I have sensitive skin too - a double edged razor like this has been best for me. Use an aftershave, as most aftershaves are designed to be antiseptic and will prevent pimples forming from any micro cuts.

      • Thanks… I've been using witch's hazel and a moisturiser to calm the rash… I'm guessing also the pores might be getting blocked because of that?
