kogan tab is coming out and much cheaper, still more bang for buck, just shows how much was rip when it was 600+

    • +1

Isnt the kogan a wifi only tablet? there is quite a difference between a good 3G tablet and a wifi tablet. Not to mention the kogan tablet is probably a branded cheapy chinese tab with impressive specs but not so impressive when its in your hand.

oh and the galaxy tab has gps, and 16gb internal, and twice the battery at 6 hours (feedback on wp is 3 hours for the kogan)

      • -4

But thats the ONLY difference. Its your call but you are paying an extra $230 for…
3G - (when you can just tether)
GPS - (which can be tethered as well if you have an android phone or BT GPS).
12GB internal storage - (as opposed to 4GB on ktab, which is more that enough considering they both have microSD).

Every other spec is identical including the SOC and screen.

Battery spec for kogan seems too low for what the capacity rating is, will have to get user feedback cause at the moment something odd is going on there.

        • +1

          Galaxy Tab - 4000mAh
          Kogan Tab - 3600mAh

        • -1

I agree it will be the users choice, but I just don't see how it will be more more bang for the buck when one of the key feature is missing. Take the iphone and ipod touch as an example, the main difference is the 3g as well, and yet there is a 500 dollar difference between the two.

Actually, come to think of it, a 8gb ipod touch would be a fairly good comparsion to the kogan tab. IF you can handle the smaaler screen.

        • i dunno about you, but i need a review of an IT product before i buy it. the galaxy tab has one, but not the ktab. can someone do a review?

        • I don't want to get into an argument with you garratt… but…. (lol)

3G isn't a "key feature" of a 7" tablet. You would always have you phone on you anyway so you can tether to it if you need to. I would file it under "nice to have feature (but not for $230 plus ongoing running costs)".

that is unless you are Dom Jolly…

        • +7

          It worths that $230. coz

          1. Better warranty services should be provided by Samsung

          2. Galaxy has 592RAM, 2GB ROM and 16GB internal memory (vs. 512RAM 4G internal memory?)

          3. high quality earphone (vs. rubblish ones you never wanna use?)

          4. Galaxy tab supports BT3 (vs. 2.1? 2.2?)

          5. Galaxy tab supports up to 5 points multi-touch screen (vs. Kogan's 2 points?)

          6. Navigon Australian and NZ (worth 54.90?)

          7. 3M AF Camera

          8. Stable system and firmware (vs. unstable and annoying system? )

        • +1

People tend to forget without 3G, you don't get GPS support. Reason being the 3G chipset has GPS capability. The same rule applies for iPads.

Kogan products…. hm.. put it this way, I will never buy another Kogan product, no matter how cheap it is.

        • I personally prefer a 3g tablet so that

          1. my phone battery is conserved, I can only tether for four - five hours before the phone battery hours flat.

          2. I can use a mobile broad band sim, which is way better value than most phone plans.

I am sure I am not alone here, and 3g for people like me is essential. But if you are happy with tethering then you dont need 3g. However it aint more bang for the buck if you use 3g.

        • Ok well kogan just changed the specs on the ktab, so its only 800x480 now. Therefore galaxy wins.

    • Some people value brand and build quality. The build quality on the galaxy is top notch.

    • +1

It's a bait and they have changed the specs. The resolution now is 800*480, how funny.

  • How does this compare to ipad?

    • Only on paper. It real life it doesn't.

How does an iPod compare with a Zune? It doesn't.

I am NOT an apple fanboy, only own 1 apple product. But this is the truth.

      • +5

        You are an Apple fanboy.

        • Because he states the truth? The Tab doesn't come anywhere NEAR the iPad 2 on ANY front…

        • Another fan Apple boy.

Compare Samsung Galaxy Tab with iPad 2. That's not really fair. It is like saying iPad 1 does not come anywhere NEAR the iPad2 on ANY front.

Also, ANY? You sure? Galaxy Tab has a better camera. With Android, you can have a widget to turn off GPS, Wifi, Bluetooth etc.. in 1 click/touch (without hitting Settings). With i-devices, you need to jailbreak to achieve that.

Free Navigon, free Google Navigation, ability to make phone calls - they all count for zero? Doesn't ANY means every aspect?

Asus has a new tablet which can be turned into a laptop… might be it is fairer to compare iPad 2 to that.

      • +2

After using my sister's ipad, I have to say that the ipad is slightly better than my samsung galaxy.

But after changing to a custom rom on my galaxy, it is now very close to ipad's performance.

    • +5

Will try to be as objective as I can. I am a supporter of both Android (Google) and iOS (Apple). Actually, I support Microsoft also (need to save up to buy a Phone 7 based phone/device).

      • Galaxy Tab has web cams - the back Web Cam is still better than iPad 2's.
      • You can customise Android more than iPad.
      • Phone (voice calls + video calls).
      • Free Navigon GPS app.
      • Cheaper (due to the heavy discount).

      • iPad has better screen (IPS - better viewing angle / less colour shift)

      • iPad has more apps (and more quality apps - especially games) - for now
      • iPad has more flash ROM built in (yes, you can install apps to SD card on Android, but some parts of it generally still go to phone memory).

Now.. the next bit is hard to really classify it as a + or -:

7 inch vs 10 inch screen : some people prefer smaller screen, some people prefer bigger screen.

If gaming is important, then iPad/iPad2 is the way to go.

      • Yea, I wish android had better quality games.

        • Get a Nintende 3DS if you want to game !

WHEN iPad will have Anno1404, Civilization, Ages Of Empires and not just
Angry Birds, Zombies vs Plannts and such
          I WILL buy an iPAD

  • +1

Will I be able to get 3g for the voda network on this?

    • its unlock .. it works on 3G and Next G. Does Voda use 3G frequency ?

    • you will be able to get vodafone 3G in main cities as they use 2100MHZ frequency but not in regional areas where they use 900MHZ frequency in regional area.

      • it means wollongang is a main city, but new castle is the regional area?

  • awesome .. missed out the JBhifi deal .. just placed an order. When will i receive it?

  • I believe it's still $360 at JB Hi Fi.

    • just curious .. which JB has stock ? im in Melbourne ..

      • I was in Osborne Park, WA today and they had them.

        • I just rang Osborne Park and they said they sold out last week with the rush

        • Must have just been the floor model. I assumed if there was a floor model, there'd be stock.

Either that or I played with something I thought was a Galaxy Tab, but wasn't.

  • if you can find it at JB for $360 hats off to you….

called 3 stores and was told all stores were sold out

  • this or an ipad?

Does this play xvids and can u mod it to do other stuff?

    • +1

i believe u can mod it .. but the online tutorials are way too complicated … (ipad jailbreak is 100 times easier)

    • +2

Galaxy Tab can play XviD and DivX straight out of the box. And yes Galaxy Tab is easy to mod. There are ROMs out there to flash. And flashing a ROM after rooting are both easy to do as long as you find the right instructions and methods. Similar to jailbreaking and some rooting programs are even easier than jailbreaking's like SuperOneClick, etc.

  • Maybe you should post this on eBay, $370 buy it now. Seems they are running round stupid over there, paying $400+ for used tabs…

  • they purposely leave out what os its running? is it 2.2?

    • It is. They are clearing out stock before the wave of Honeycomb tablets hits the market.

  • +3

Beats trapsing (it's a word, honest) around town looking for a JB Hifi bargain to save $9.
    Just bought one :)

    • +5

      It's a word if spelt "traipsing"! ;)

      • +1

        Oh sweet Jesus.

        • That would be "Sweet Zombie Jesus"! ;)

  • +2

The price will probably come down even more once the galaxy 10.1 tablet comes out

    • +1

And you cannt catch one at that time.

    • +2

probably will but I don't think it will be much cheaper than this. A wifi only version just went on sale in the US for 350, but i can see it drop down to 200ish fairly soon. Therefore a 3g at the 300 price range is probably alright for the next couple of month. But make no mistake galaxy was over price when it was initially launched.

      edit

      a wifi 7inch for 350pounds rrp

  • +2

I inquire about the price with unique mobile at the time of jb hifi pricing. and they answer they were competitive at 5 hundred something and would not move.

    • -1

well, i guess that's fair enough, either they had salesmen being kept in the dark or they didn't want to reveal their plans at the time

  • so tempted, they even have an alpha release of honeycomb at xda. but lot of things not working. at least its work in progress and once google releases the honeycomb source code, they can have a perfect port. I guess I will wait till then :)

  • how many left?

  • Just purchased one as I missed the JB price!

  • does anyone know where I can get a non-Next G model at this price?

  • ARRRGGHHH!! Just got it from Telstra Shop for $40 more.. :(
    Sucks.. Feel ripped..

  • +1

Hey guys can you update this to Version 3.0 software afterwards ?

    • Maybe from a cook at XDA Developers, but it is unlikly from the mfr

    • depends on what the mods can do once honeycomb aosp is released.

    • Samsung did announce at one stage that they will release a honeycomb update to the 7inch galaxy tab

  • +2

Gahh, so many gadgets, so little money to spend.

    Damn you Ozbargain.

  • -1

Just ordered one, saves me going to see George at JB on Saturday in the city :D

  • Out of stock!

    • +1

      lol power of ozbargain :D

    • +5

Good for me in a way. I don't need a tablet, but at this price, it is so tempting. Since it is out of stock, I don't need to think about it anymore.

  • we want more. more more more.

  • noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • More more more pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • +1

So many tempting deals… must hold out lol. I only recently got my Desire and this modding bug has got me hooked all over again!

I just keep telling myself… the only difference is the bigger screen… mmm…

  • +1

My 2c. I got mine from JB in Perth and can't be happier. Do NOT buy the chinese (i.e Kogan) ones. They're rubbish.
I in fact I bought a chinese one before and managed to get a refund from the supplier when the galaxy price dropped.
They're quite buggy. A lot of things simply don't work even with XDA-developer software. No GPS or 3G support, WIFI signal very average and battery life quite bad. All in all I'd much rather spend a little extra for a galaxy

    • Which Perth JB?

  • If had seen this one first then I would not have to wait for the one at the JB Hifi in the Sydney CBD now. Anw both deals are/were just excellent.

  • Had a few orders where customers didn't checkout - These have been made available again! I am looking to secure more stock and will update you through the course of today

    • Is it only the white version that's on sale or there's any blacks?

    • When will be available again?? Website showing out of stock :(

    • It now says orders will ship 19/4. Will initial orders still ship today?

      • Hi, Yes all Initial orders will shop today. Those with the title change will ship next week.

  • +1

Good deal,But it's single core, Android 2.2 and 7inch, small for read PDF Book.

Vodafone will release Galaxy Tab 10.1(dual-core, 10.1 inch and Android 3.0) at 3th My and Pre-order will from 20th April. It's free on 39/month Plan.

After that, I think this device's price will reduced more.

    Just waiting and waiting.

digital devices' price always reduce more in future after new version launched.

  • +2

I would prfer 7" , 10" not as conveniant to carry around…..but if just using as e reader 10" is good

    • yep…i was actually after a 6-7" ereader, not too keen on carrying a 10" device whilst standing on a crowded train.

  • is it just me or did they remove the free delivery part? cause after shipping costs+transit insurance, it costs almost $385.

    • Hi, The only time shipping will be added is if you add any accessories to the order. Thanks

  • Just bought 2!!!!
On the website, how do you see/track your orders?

    • uniqumobiles, can you please answer my question?

also, i ordered 2 (2 separate orders), can i have 1 black and 1 white if possible?
Please let me know if you need the order number

      • Hi, When order ships tracking details are sent to the registered email address!

Sorry we only have white available.

  • I ordered one just then and seems there was no option for black or white. I think it's white only. Really wish I could've gotten a black one though.

  • How do I know whether my order has been confirmed and shipped? The order is under the name of Kenneth

  • I was just wondering…. how many did you have?

  • Go check for the email uniquemobiles send you. They have a link at the bottom of the email for you to check the status of you order, whether your payment has been processed, if item has been shipped, etc.

Also does anyone know where to get a good deal on the cases for these tablets? I was happy with the price they had on uniquemobiles but chuck on the transit insurance and shipping costs and the original price of the case is doubled.

    • That's a checkout issue - use promo code APR2011UM if you would like to add to your order and you will get free delivery :)

  • Thanks. Was I right about the tablets only being available in white or is there actually a choice? Thanks again.

  • +6

Good deal. Just a heads up that Telstra will be doing these for $299 outright in the very near future. NB I am a Telstra employee.

    • U 100% guarantee it man?

      • +1

Price yes, don't know the exact date.

        • +1

they must really be trying to get rid of them then. how did u find this out? internal mail? or rumor

        • Will Telstra have enough stock for people? Some Telstra shops don't even at stock (and they were selling them for $408).
