Here's a video of someone reviewing the M40x and to an extent comparing it to the M50x.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ceoarQf9Ac

A lot of people usually prefer the M40x to the M50x as they both have very different sound signatures and aren't necessarily a direct upgrade.
The M50x headphones are usually considered more bass-y than the M40x - which has a more flat sound signature. There are lots of benefits to having a flatter sound signature, one of them is you don't get fatigued listening for long periods of times unlike the M50x's with its added bass. This is why some users report finding their M50x's sound 'muddy'.
That's not to say the M50x's aren't great headphones, some people really like that elevated bass, but for the people who like a clean and neutral sound, pick these up!

Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro Closed 32/80/250 Ohm $199

Another great pick up for $199

Trying to summarize a Beyerdynamic headphone is a bit of a headache, between the different Ohm versions, amplifiers, etc, there can be a lot to summarize, so here's a video of someone doing a better job than me -

The DT770's have been praised for having an amazing soundstage, in fact, some people claim it has the best soundstage they've heard from a closed back headphone.
As always, they're incredible comfortable headphones, and their bass pops quite nicely.
I've read from a user saying it has a sound signature similar to the M50x's, but better in every way - which I can believe considering how much praise the soundstage of these headphones get, which can definitely translate to a cleaner sound.

I own these, they're a good option if you're looking for something portable and closed back at this price point, but in terms of sound they're just ok, nothing special.

    • +1

Agreed. They're nothing special, but that's the point of the M40x's. It's not about making the headphone 'fun', it's about making a neutral sounding headphone, some people really appreciate that. :)

I don't know, they still seem pretty bass-heavy to me - but its more the sound stage that's the let down. Still pretty good headphones though, don't get me wrong lol.

I love audiophile buzz words / descriptors / phrases.

  • These are great headphones, you'll struggle to find better quality cans at this price.

The only con for me is that the fit is a bit tight.

    • I also own these, they are fantastic, come with a really long lead aux cable and a shorter springy cable for commuting. Can confirm, they aren't comfortable enough to wear for more than a couple hours, but the quality is worth it.

    • +1

Definitely a valid point. Audio Technica are pretty slack with comfort, these headphones definitely need to be broken in.
I recommend anyone who picks these up and finds them clamping too much, stretch them out over something large over night, should help a bit.
Also, aftermarket earcups help quite a bit with comfort.

  • always $129 free shipping from pccasegear.

    • Averages out to about the same, and Umart has a pretty good refund policy.
Besides, I mostly made this post for the pick-up option. I'm sure there are plenty other better shipping deals, like -

        • Why would you do that for $19 more?
