      usb 2.0

  • USB 2. Bought one last time. My one died after 1 day. The drive tends to go to energy saving mode too often.

shopping square have the usb3 one for $8 more… but 11ty billion dollars shipping

also you guys might wanna check out the Acer $599 i5 laptop going at HN…

  • I'm going to be my usual painful self and ask this (sorry, I do apologise)

Can anyone confirm if, INSIDE the enclosure (not the plug on the outside) whether the HDD has a SATA connector or if it is natively USB? I want to upgrade my laptop and need a 2.5" sata drive, but it's hard to buy barebones 2.5" drives without a 50% price premium.

    • Pretty sure these are the 3.5" model.

    • 2TB model … if it is a 2.5" I want one too !!!

    • 1tb is 2.5", but not sure about internals

    • You almost certainly will not fit a 1TB 2.5" drive inside your laptop. Most of the lamptops use a 9.5mm thick hard drive, and the larger sized ones with 3 platters (like this Samsung) are 12.5mm thick.

At the moment it seems that the most common are 2 platter (2x250=500GB or 2x333=640GB) in the 9.5mm thickness. I don't think they've made a 2x500=1000GB 9.5" drive yet? There might be an exception, I am not completely up to date with the bleeding edge of computer tech.

      • I can fit a 15.0mm drive if I need :)

As long as it's 2.5", I'm good to go.

Samsung should have 2x500gb=1tb 2.5" drives coming out. They've advertised the fact that they can do them, but could be a long time before we see the actual product.

  • hi can someone explain to me, if i have a usb 3.0 and connect to a usb 2.0 port, will it still play?

    • yes, it will work, but not at USB 3.0 speeds

    • Yes it will work at USB2 speeds, its backwards compatible.

    • Yep, it will work fine. I have a couple of USB 3.0 devices now, and they perform about 10% better than a standard USB 2.0 drive. That is simply because they have a better controller inside that really does get the full USB 2.0 speed from your existing ports.

  • Just went to HN QV, Melbourne, but they said only 1TB Samsung S2 is on sale. Not the 2TB story.

  • The 2tb was at my local HN for $93 when it reopened after the floods

The is the Oxley store in Brisbane not sure if it is still going or not

  • Two melbourne stores had plenty of stock of the 2tb samsung but wouldn't budge from $127

  • so what's the deal…is this nationwide? Any stores in Melbourne where it IS on sale?

People, whoever wants to fit an internal hdd into their laptop, really should buy an ACTUAL internal laptop hdd drive, not these new 2.5" externals. Just in case they won't fit or isn't compatable, u'll waste your warranty and time!!! Talking about the S2, oh the things a gem, it works awesome. Got it for 99 bucks 1 month ago at HN. It's darn cute, with its blue lighting around its edges, and it even comes with its own leather pouch. It rather looks like a blackberry inside its pouch. I have been transferring 2 videos per day for the last month onto my S2 and its speeds about 5mb/s (my old 2.5" Maxtor from 5 years back does max 3.2mb/s)—hasn't done an error ever. AND its so shiny…piano black…pity they don't sell them in blue, white, or red though for the 1tb at least. NOTE: the S2's drive is USB soldiered on to make it smaller than its competitors i.e WD, Seagate…etc.
