  • Wireless Android. Now you're taking. I can't be bothered always connecting my phone via USB to the car even if Google Maps is better.

Will wireless Android need a full hardware upgrade for existing cars or will it be a firmware update? I have a MY18 2017 Golf.

    • Wireless is nice for short trips, but it really eats your battery life.

      • Yeah…surely it can't be good for battery health to having to constantly charge it at the same time.

Wireless mirroring for android, not wireless "Android Auto". Unless I'm reading it wrong

    Your normal price is $749?

    • These usually retail @ $1000

      • +2

        They're $748 @ Ryda.com, and that's not a sale price.

Both ryda and frankies list them as:

        $1200 $744

…but they never sold them at $1200, that's just the rrp. I think that's a little misleading.

Frankies still has the best price, but only by a few dollars.

    Waiting for wireless android auto!

    • Totally… I have endless issues with the USB connection for my Sony Head Unit, it basically makes it 5x more dangerous, when the navigation suddenly disconnects, and you want to fumble with the cord :(

So now I don't even try anymore, all I get is audio out over BT, with my phone displaying the map

      • Oh really - i was on the verge of buying a sony android auto HU too!

  • I was waiting for a wireless carplay headunit and went into a store to check them out over the weekend. I was surprised to see that you either have the option of DAB or wireless. Only very recently released headunits have both, and cost a fortune.

The store rep also said the wireless eats your battery, so now I'm trying to decide basically between a wireless headunit (where I'd have to plug my phone in to charge at times anyway) or a headunit with DAB that I have to plug in, but get the benefit of charging also. Plus the DAB/non-wireless unit is much cheaper. Decisions, decisions…

Also can anyone recommend an installer in Melbourne South East / Peninsula ? And any idea of roughly what I should pay for an install ? 2009 Kluger KX-S Id need the reverse camera hooked up and a USB port to replace the cigarette lighter. No steering wheel controls needed

    • Save your money and get the non wireless and DAB version. If you're not plugging your phone into your car for carplay, then you're plugging it in later on to charge the phone cause the battery was drained.

I don't even need to try it out to know that the wired version will be more stable, and possibly slightly quicker, than the wireless equivalent.

I wonder if a wireless charge mat can keep up with the battery drain?

        • Wireless charging and constant streaming via wifi will cause your device to get hot, quite hot. Heat will degrade the life of your battery.

      • Thats the way I'm leaning, thanks for your advice

    • I installed a kenwood android auto in the exact same car. It was pretty easy. Just look up on youtube how to remove the old stereo, and the new one plugs straight in.

    • Buy yourself a cradle that has a charging/data port from someone like holdmyphone.com.au

Connect the usb cable to the head unit.

This is the setup we have in my wifes Passat and it works perfectly.

    • I had getinstalled install my head unit and found him good. You'll find him on FB.

    • Wait for the new Kenwood DDX919WS to come out this year. It is 200mm and is made to specifically fit Toyota 200mm wide holes - you won't need to buy spacers. It will be the first wave of Kenwood units to have wireless CarPlay. If you don't want to wait or can't be bothered with wireless get last year's DDX918WS on sale cheap somewhere.

It comes with a Toyota specific harness so it is plug and play - you should be able to install the unit yourself with a socket set and some screwdrivers. I also self-installed the camera connection, you just need to identify which wire is carrying the camera signal and tap into that, but if you can't be bothered you could pay someone to do that.

Wireless CarPlay is the future and it is worth it, not having to plug your phone in each and every time you get in the car. Either get a wireless charging mat or just plug your phone in the off chance you need to top up the battery. Plugging your phone in every time to use CarPlay and maps, will become very tiresome.

  • I’ve had this installed for about 4 months and use wireless CarPlay.
    Battery life with the phone hasn’t been an issue as the 2 x things on the phones that burn through battery arn’t In use;
    * Screen: is turned off as your using the head unit’s screen
    * GPS: the GPS built into the Head Unit is used instead of the phones.

I’ve found the battery drain of wireless CarPlay to be negligible.

It is so good not having to plug it in every time. Just get in the car and go.

    • Thanks for that, I also noticed Tune In Radio is supported by Car play, so I'm happy with that over a DAB radio to be honest.

Quick question for you (or the Frankies Rep) I'm keen on using google maps which is now supported by Car Play. I watched the pioneer wireless connection guide video which mentions three specific head units. Two of the newer AVIC models, plus this model we are talking about here.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMJaaU0FVhs&t=32s

Right at the start, he refers to the two AVIC models as "Navigation Receivers" but the AVH-Z9150BT is referred to as an "AV Receiver" Whats the difference here ? Does it mean the AVH-Z9150BT can't receive navigation from your phone for Google Maps ?

      • AVH-Z9150BT Can definitely do google maps, Apple maps & waze for navigation when using CarPlay.
It can not do any navigation without a phone connected to it running CarPlay or android auto.

I haven’t looked up the other 2 x navigation models but I assume they can use CarPlay and also use navigation built into the head unit when a phone isn’t connected.

        • Ok thanks mate, so Google Maps definitely works with wireless car play on the Z9150BT ? (Not just plugged in)

I really would like to know the difference between a "Navigation Receiver" and "AV Receiver". The Pioneer guy made a point to call them that instead of just saying the model numbers. Ill do some more digging and report back if I find anything.

edit: I'm thinking what you said might be it. Navigation receiver has navigation built in, AV receiver does not and relies on your phone being plugged in. If thats the case, great !
