            • @gobarney: Now I'm a staff member at a uni so I have an .edu email. Is it just a send or do they require anything further?

      • +2

… then walk back to Harvey Norman and beat the student price by 10%

        mobileception

  • +1

Great deals, my wifes pixel 2 XL battery lasts all day, my shitty S9+ has to be charged in the middle of the day, usage is about the same… No more samsung for me i tell ya!

    • +1

It's worth looking into, my S9+ lasts a fair bit longer than my p2xl. Also p3 and p3xl has less battery life than 2xl.

    • +1

Lol, have you ever owned an iPhone?

    • My partners + lasts all day. Maybe dodgy battery?

    • Can confirm that Pixel 2XL ( which from memory, had a bigger battery than Pixel 3XL) lasts a long time, even after 14 months.
      Excellent phone, with amazing photos.

    • +1

don't use top resolution. that drains battery

      • Hello? Police? This comment here.

    • The battery life has been tested to be similar, with the edge given to s9+. It's okay to have a preference but don't make up BS

    • Found it to drain fast until I logged out of my Samsung account so it'd stop auto-backups (since I've already got Google doing it for me).

  • Does anyone know if the handsets would be locked to Optus?

How does the Harvey Norman deal work?

Also, I can churn a number to this, yeah?

    • Handsets are unlocked and just walk into any HN and say you want to connect and get the port in discount.

  • If it's 31st of march, then the s10 would be included I suppose. I'll wait.

    • +1

I doubt it, the deal is for slightly older and/or less popular models. I.e the new iPhones aren't included, the galaxy note 9 isn't included.

      • Mate 20 pro is newer than note 9

        • +1

"Or less popular models"… China phones still aren't big in the west, no matter what reviews will have you think. So they need to be discounted, they can't compete at Apple/Samsung prices.

          • @Binchicken22: Fair enough. I guess I should take the mate 20 pro given that s10 would probably come out with high price tag.

$1634 (after 10% student discount) - 1200 (last best ozbargain deal) - 100 (approx freebudz on ebay) = 334 = $14 pm for 30gb data. Not bad, not bad at all.

Could be better if I get 10% off from Harvey too.

  • Anyone know if recontracting is classed as a new service?
Signed up to a plan for $105 on the iPhone xs on Friday and haven't received the phone yet so I'll need to find a way out of it (and minimal difference between X and XS)

    • Nope not a new service. New service is either 1. Port in from another carrier or 2. Brand New number.

      • Damn. Thank you

        • You can upgrade your existing plan if you have student discount.

Or pay $149 and return your old phone……

    • How much data do you get on your $105 iPhone XS?

    • You should be able to refuse delivery hence making the contract invalid and just sign up another one after. This would be the advice of the sales rep if you call them up to say you wish to cancel the Xs too afaik. Hope that helps

      • Yep refused delivery this morning so that plan is dead. It's for the wife and she has agreed to take on a new number so I will just cancel the old one and go with a new one through HN.

@Joey Jo Jo it was 200gb data so it wasn't a bad plan but it was a bit overkill considering she only uses 10-15gb per month

    • Recontracted instore and it worked fine.

  • +1

Have Optus improved their customer service?

    • +3

Nope. Got a new service with them at beginning of January … After 4 phone calls and a week of waiting, I am now on hold for 45 minutes to speak to a technician because the service is only partially activated. Got data and texts, but no phone calls! But don't worry, they have billed me since the day the Sim arrived!

  • +2

A friend of mine ported from Optus to Amaysim and the next day went to Harvey Norman to sign up for one of these Optus plans as a new customer. All paperwork was completed pending port but then got a rejection on the following day saying will receive a letter from Optus explaining the reason. Probably was too soon to recontact? Does anyone know how long one should wait on a different service provider before trying to recontract?

Edit: or can this be due to the reason that Amaysim uses the Optus network?

    • +1

I did the same but with Vodafone and waited 4 days and it went through just fine

    • +1

Optus to Amaysim ports (and vice versa) can take up to 5 days to process. Ports between Optus and their MVNOs are manual, as opposed to the automatic process that occurs when switching between the 3 networks. On top of that, the worker doing the port may not close the case properly, which can cause issues when porting back in.

Your friend didn’t do enough research - using Amaysim as a port out/in route is a terrible idea.

      • Cheers Strahany, learnt something new today. Will pass this info on to him because he was going to try one more time to get the Optus Pixel 3 plan, will ask him to port out to Vodafone first and then go visit HN.

    • My port from Catch Connect to Optus took a week but it's all up & running now.

  • im on a sim only plan anyone know if you can upgrade to this fee free?

    • Why dont you ask them…

    • No. I am in the same boat. Talked to their sales rep, she confirmed not possible. Deal is only applicable, if you port or buy new number.

      • Darn it is a good deal but that is life

    • no. new services only.

      • +1

Try with billing team, they usually waived the fees . i just upgrade my sim only plan. so gotta wait another month. Pixel 3 is very good value if I can stack with student discount :D

    • For some reason my sim only was recognised as prepaid. So try selecting existing prepaid customer in online form. YMMV

      • u will have to pay early cancellation fees if u do it by urself .

        • I am out of contract anyway but no fees if moving to a higher tariff

  • I'm currently on a $30 month to month optus plan. What would be the best way of porting out to another provider and then porting back in before the offer expires in March? It's ridiculous they don't look after their existing customers!

    • +1

It's ridiculous they don't look after their existing customers!

Do any telcos not do this? Getting sick of it and don't want to support the ones that do if possible.

      • Kogan seem good, I buy their 365 day plans, and it's being constantly upgraded data. I think when I first got it, it was 1.5GB a month, it's up to 13 or 15GB a month now.

Good deal for $17 a month as long as you have a phone

    • get a free sim or two dollors starter sim
port out then apply for this plan?

    • if you are on a m2m plan you should be able to port out any time you want.

get a start pack sim with say telstra/voda, port out then port back in.

      • thanks mate i'll give that a go!

      • I've asked a Harvey norman rep about this and he mentioned that optus has been catching on port outs then port ins. Wonder how long is a long enough period to be ported out before they stop flagging this….

        • Honestly I doubt they will do anything about it..their fault for not looking after existing clients lol.

Still count as new business if port out then in for them, all revenue after all

    • Kogan give and give and give ;)

  • Do Optus still offer the $10 bundle discount if you already have another service with them? (eg, mobile broadband)

    • yes , i have 1 nbn and 1 phone service with them , got 10$ discount on NBN plan 60 pm on their speed pack 3 plan

    • +1

I asked about this in an Optus store and all they could offer was $5 off per month one plan if I signed up two plans. I already have an Optus internet + phone bundle with Optus. Was disappointed!

    • Not for what they term "special offers". They couldn't do it for me with these offers.

  • My wife's finishing up a Virgin plan next month. Does that count as a new customer?

    • +1

Yeah mate. i moved my wife's Virgin service over to Optus during the Christmas HN offer.

Also, you dont have to wait until the end of the contract with Virgin IF you are moving to optus. They won't charge you a cancellation fee, provided you move only to optus

If you have an existing optus number, you can also get a $10 port discount on your wife's number.

      • Are you sere about this ? I have 400 remaining amount.
Would they waive this amount if I move from Virgin to Optus?

        • +1

Forget about how much you owe Virgin for cancellation.

The cut off period is 6 months or less with Virgin if you want to move over to Optus.

You can contact Virgin customer support to confirm this. I called them multiple times and moved successfully to Optus.

When I moved the services, I had 5 months & 3 weeks left on the Virgin 24 month contract.

Within your Virgin account, there would be an option to look at Optus offers and it would also show a message saying that the fees would be waived off if it is under 6 months left on the contract

          • @aspirepranesh: Hey mate is this buy or lease plan

            • @[Deactivated]: The plan I signed up for my wife in Dec was a buy. I am sure this post here from OP is also a buy plan.

          • +1

            @aspirepranesh: Thanks Mate!

          • +1

@aspirepranesh: Thanks for The tip. The call centre girl in Phillipines checked with her manager and she said it is possible to switch.

            • +1

@azm: No worries mate. Check with HN, they can offer a 10% possible porting discount on the cost of the plan as well

      • Thanks for that. Would you suggest contacting Virgin or Optus? Or are they the same now.

        • +1

Virgin first if you still want a confirmation about no payments to them. Once confirmed, either call optus to sign up or go to HN for a further 10% off and they will speak with optus and sort out the porting for you.

  • -7

iPhone 8 and iPhone X are the same price?

    • -3

Lol why am I being begged? Am I missing something?

      • +1

It's in a previous comment, pretty much on the mobile website, when you're scrolling through the price stays the same, however if you continue through the process the price will change

        • -5

Hardly a reason tonne negged. iFruit fanboys are a sensitive type. Can't blame them though.

      • Please

  • +3

I'm with optus already and on sim only plan but finished my contract. Can i add this plan then swap numbers between the 2 plans before cancelling the other one?

  • Anyone going for Razer Phone 2?
    Most value for your bucks

  • +1

Tried to get Telstra to match, best they could do was:

"Ryan, upon checking the only thing we can price match for iPhone 8 64gb on 24 month is for M plan $94 less $10.00 disc. total of $84 a month with 20gb. of data."

Even when I threatened to take my NBN to Optus also they said they cant because Telstra has better "quality in terms for service."

I wasn't after an exact price match but even what they offered is crap.

    • Agent: I'm sorry to say, that what plan bundle and mobile plan you had right is the best price in our market. However Telstra is doing something in next couple month, to reward those customers being loyal.

Me: Well that's about time! Can you advise on what that is cause if its something good I might hang around and not port over to Optus?

Agent: Yes, because our higher management talked about the loyalty the last time we had town hall meeting and they discuss about the giving a loyalty reward to those customers whose been with us for 24 months.

Me: What type of loyalty reward?

Agent: They don't disclose about, what are the specific reward. Something about the monthly cost and inclusions on the plan.

I find it funny he claims Telstra has better service yet his sentences don't even make sense.

      • To be fair - He could be speaking Italian and it would be better service than Optus.

    • Telstra chat offered me $69 p/month for an s9 and 30GB data with peace of mind. They should be able to do a similar price for the 8 I'd think. It's always just random luck with Telstra chat so try rolling the dice again. This is just a recontract too, they would do an extra $10 off p/month for a port in.

      • Honestly if they offered me the 8 for $69 I would take it.

      • Trying again as we speak and here is a new one, can anyone shed any light on the following?:

Thank you for waiting. I've checked optus offer and yes, it's really a great deal. Unfortunately we can't match any other provider's offer since that's against consumer law. We can provide you what's available with Telstra. For your data usage, have you ever gone over 15 GB of data per month?

"Unfortunately we can't match any other provider's offer since that's against consumer law."

How on earth could matching another provider be against consumer law?

        • I'm not sure where they're finding their scripts these days.
I had one tell me that "all other providers are just renting Telstra's old equipment so they can offer plans at a lower price"

  • +1

Bummer, I signed up on their $77.10 (with 10% discount) deal for pixel 3 during the boxing day sales with 100GB of data. I barely even use 5Gb a month. This is a much better deal.

  • +2

I would wait till Harvey Norman offers $200 port in ;)

    • Speculation or do you know something…?

      • +2

$200 bonus coming soon, that what I was told by a rep as I normally sign a few contracts when promo is on, signed 5 contracts with Pixel 3 last time which were pretty good value for my crews :)

        • Cool, so I assume this $200 bonus replaces the 10% discount…? so about another $60 value.

        • Any idea when? Wife's S7 has a smashed selfie cam, want to sign up asap.

  • Was trying to compare how much Telstra is charging for iPhone X plan.. and mind blown that it is $10/mth more than the iPhone XS (both with Telstra)… where's the logic in that :|

  • If i'm with Optus on a month-to-month plan, can i port to another provider for one month then go back to Optus to claim this deal?
Wanting to retain my number, so buying a new sim won't be suitable.

    • Should be fine

    • do you think it's something that's frowned upon by Optus, or is it pretty much the norm to do this to benefit from these deals?

      • +1

they should be ashamed that you as an existing customer have to go through the trouble just to get the same benefit as a new customer. Loyalty is dead these days.

        • can't argue with that haha

  • +1

Is this buy or lease and can i combine with my ipad pkan to get 10 off

    • No can't get $10 on these offers unfortunately.

      • Are you sure?

When I was looking at them in an Optus store yesterday their web kiosk with the details seemed to give the $10 discount for a second service.

  • current plan has the student discount, do I need to re apply? or will that be carried over when I sign up?

  • 79/mth is pretty good considering ipx is still going for like 1.4-1.5k here and there

  • +3

Looks like you should also get 12 months of free HD Netflix plan (13.99pm x 12 = $167.88 value) with the S9 & S9+ plans on offer here according to this page https://www.optus.com.au/shop/deals-bundles

    • Yes, got Netflix code through webchat. thanks

  • I just jumped on webchat to Telstra to request a deal to match Optus. No dice :(
The best they would offer me is a $10 discount on their Mobile M plan. No deal.
