New Microsoft Surface Go - Intel 4415Y / 8GB / 128GB SSD - $698 @ Harvey Norman

100

I know it was posted in the past, but that deal was expired on 3rd Jan 2019. Happy for Mods to re-activate the previous deal. But it is currently the cheapest. JBHiFi has it for $839 https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/tablets/microsof…

The LTE version https://www.harveynorman.com.au/new-microsoft-surface-go-int… $948 ($998 @JBHiFi)
The cheaper 4gb version https://www.harveynorman.com.au/new-microsoft-surface-go-int… $498 ($599 @JBHiFi)
I'm planning to buy one for my wife.

  • if this is not the GO version i may bite

  • If this included LTE and the keyboard for $698 it would be a compelling deal but it is otherwise pretty hard to get excited about the Surface Go.

  • Would this be ok for a first year high schooler?

      Sure it would.

I think a laptop would be a more durable form factor for a 13yo

  • Would a Surface Pro 3 with an i7 be better than this?
I've found a few refurbished versions for around the same price and they come with keyboards.

    • Where?

      • eBay.
You can even get the i5 version for $329.

I have a i7 Surface Pro 3. Its performance is great and would be much faster than the current Go. However, personally I wouldnt get the SP3 because of its poor battery life compared to more recent Surface Pros. The best I have gotten out of it is 4.5 hours when new. Now, it lasts about 2-3 hours only. If you dont mind this, then yes, it would be much better than the Go.

I am upgrading my SP3 purely because of the signicantly battery life of newer models

Faster CPU yes (~5500 multicore Geekbench 4 for the Pro 3 i7 vs ~4000 in the Go). But slower graphics, slower SSD, much smaller trackpad and the Go uses the latest pen, witch is much better if that matters to you. Plus a new battery in a new product vs a refurb.

I think I’d go with the Go if they are a similar price.

Yes it would be better if you are ok with a larger machine and older style keyboard.
Surface pro 4 is much better against and worth some extra hours in the salt mines…
