Razer Huntsman Optical Switch Mech Keyboard $129 (Was $249) @ MSY

220

My way of saying thanks for the Blackwidow Elite heads up. I made an account yesterday to post my appreciation in the orig MSY sale thread after price-matching the Blackwidow deal at JBHifi.

Had my VPN on though when I made the account so blocked till this morning.

After selling out of the Blackwidow Elite MSY have changed the keyboard in their 'Back to school' sale with the Huntsman for $129. Reg price is $249 at MSY and JBHifi. Not sure if JB will price-match again.

Note this NOT the Huntsman Elite, so no wristpad, chroma lighting around the outside or media keys.

The Huntsman also only comes with opti switches. The opti switches are similar to the yellows on the Blackwidow Elite. They're super responsive and are supposed to input slightly faster then regular mech switches (probably no real world difference in most cases).

Note that unlike the Blackwidow sale MSY are accepting backorders for the Huntsman if they sell out.

Mouse and pad for $7 seem like a real bargain.

  • Is it me of is Razer really not that great? I've got a few of their products and it's average at best even compared to much cheaper products..

    • My keyboard and mouse always broke so after 4 repeats I got a different brand.

      • I think Razer products is a little more fragile than others. I'm not a rough user and never had any razer stuff broke for the past 10 years but I know someone that uses it roughly breaks it every year.

I think Razer swaps functionality (or RGB) for sturdiness/longevity, which makes sense for them: their target demographic are mostly gamers who generally refresh hardware far more often than the normal user, and adding more components/complexity to a product necessarily increases the chances of something breaking sooner.

@HighAndDry: To be fair, their base models don't have RGB etc. Their target audience is high-performance users, and hence the high performance hardware. Still got my original razor blackwidow, meanwhile at work I've gone through 3 Logitech MX master mice and 2 Logitech keyboards.

    • Yeah Razer is pretty bad, i got a Deathadder that have wiring problem after 6 months. Their software is borderline malware.

I have gone Logitech and never look back.

Not sure about Logitech anymore - I had a G502 mouse for about 18 months and the middle button is pretty much not working anymore. I went to the latest Razer Naga Trinity and its just.. not the great either - the buttons seem pretty weak and doesn't feel right.

Had 3 G9/x's and all 3 had the single click fault, 1 had intermittent laser? Detection. All 3 times logitech weaseled out of warranty, no more logitech for me, ymmv.

Got a steelseries kana from centrecom from a previous deal 2 years ago for $15, still chugging no issues.

      • Yea Logitech is mostly worse unfortunately

    • This is my first Razer keyboard. The only other product I've had is a Razer Raiju controller for the PS4 and that's still going strong after a year and a half.

My keyboards get heavy use so I guess I'll see how it goes. Mech keyboards from a technical standpoint are pretty hard to screw up. The lighting dial might be a weak point but other than that it's just led lights and keys to push.

Two year warranty so I'm confident I'll get my money's worth either way.

Agree on the Synapse software being a bit wonky. Had to "log in" with my Razer account just to change the lighting to static white.

Basic functionality like that shouldn't require internet login. Apparently you can turn off the login by text editing a file in the install directory but I didn't bother.

Oh and whatever you do DO NOT install the dodgy crypto mining scam component.

      • Which component is that? Might’ve done accidentally :/

        • Razer Softminer.

It mines cryptocurrency for Razer when it detects low usage.

In exchange they give you some points bullshit. By the time you have enough points to get anything you've probably spent the equivalent in power.

    • It's not just you. They're the Bose of the computer world. Cheap and nasty components manufactured for as little money as possible. But they're pretty, and Razer market the sh*t out of them.

    • Had my razer Black widow for many years. Still feels like new. Logitech on the other hand is fragile!

  • Pretty good price but I've been waiting for the huntsman elite

    • The Huntsman Elite isn't even sold in Australian retailers. Razer site $370 LOL

      • +1

JB sell the Huntsman Elite for $339. It's an exclusive though so looks like they have the rights for Australia. The Raiju Ultimate is another example.

JB has the rights for some but not all Razer products across AU as per whatever agreement with Razer they have.

  • That Razer Nari deal seems good too

  • All Razer DeathAdder's I've had have had the the double click button issue. I have fixed them all, and it's fairly easy: https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/29955/how-do…. This will void your warranty, so if its still in the warranty period and can wait a few weeks, it might be better to get it swapped (you may even get a newer version).

Would not touch their keyboards though…

  • How does this compare with the huntsman elite and blackwidow elite (not comparing the RGB and wrist guard)

    • +1

Vs huntsman - Based on what I've seen and read and heard, both normal and elite keys are exactly the same. They have the same keys. The elite comes with the magnetic wrist functions and the three audio buttons and jog dial, but nothing else.
The keyboard cable management system is supposed to be better with the BW but it has 50g of actuation force vs the 45g in the HM.

Bought it at Jb-Hi-Fi with the price match. Prob get 5% less if you use officeworks but the Jb was close by and not bothered to go to MSY
