Anyone know if the mounting clip part has exposed metal? I have an older Rock mount that does and it scratches the air con vents in my Mazda 3.

    • +2

      No it doesnt

    • +1

No metal on mine although I've got a fair share of sratches. If it doesn't sit flush on the vent or if it comes a little loose the movement can cause some scratches.

Woohoo, just bought like 100 to resell on ebay for $9.99.

    • -1

      No. You didn't.

  • +4

i dont understand. my car air vent are so thin and easy to move, if i put a phone will definitely falls.

    • I have ended up breaking my car air vent by this clip holder with 5.8" screen 163g phone.

Yet another reason that 4” phones are the best phones.

    • -1

      Mine too - and I have a 4" iPhone!

  • +1

Beware with these if you have a largish phone, even though it says it supports up to 6 inches, i would avoid if your phone is larger than 5.8 as it's really difficult to get the phone in and out of the holder, you need two hands and a lot of fiddling. I switched to the magnetic phone holder instead and would recommend those over this any day, waaay easier to attach and detach your phone and mine has been flawless.

    • -1

yeah make sense. the magnetic would be way easier and stable too

I was using a magnetic phone holder for ~4 months. Works perfectly in Autumn, but come Summer with 42+ degrees, the adhesive stopped working.

        • Hmm, maybe get a better one with 3M stickers. I've been using mine for 1.5 years and I live in SEQLD where the sun melts my dashboard and have had no issues at all with mine.

        • maybe you could try a suction cup mounted one? I've had issues with vent-mounts and dash-mounts, but magnetic suction cup is all good. the swivel joint loses grip if it gets too hot in the car, but it's easy enough to retighten.

EDIT: unless you're talking about the actual magnet, I just have mine loose inside the case of my phone.

      Advantage for smaller phones :)

      • magnetic holder must have magnetic sticker (metal), which gets super hot with wireless charging.

    • How does the magnetic holder work? Do you have to put a magnet on your phone as well? I have a case on my phone so don't want to stick something on the case since it will be awkward.

      • they give you a metal sticker that sticks on the back of your case, they're usually very thin so you won't know it's there. but yeah, the metal will be in the middle of your phone and wireless charging base and they will get hot.

      • The one I bought comes with two phone stickers, you can either stick it to your phone or use the bigger one and place it between your phone and the case and it still works, unless you have a thick case. My partner uses the in-between case and phone method without sticking and it works well for her. I can recommend this one which my partner uses, I have the one for the air vents: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Baseus-360-Degree-Rotation-M…

    • +1. Bought the ver 2 one and ditched it as way too fiddly to insert/remove phone. Way prefer my Choetech Magnetic holder with rotation where just tap it on.

Whats updated in the updated model?

I have one like this (unsure about whether its the updated model or not), and its terrible.

I have a Note 4 which is slightly above average in size/weight, and when it is in this holder, it always overbalances and falls off the air vent.

I've actually found the original version without any locking ball joint to be better in my vehicles.

The ball joint places the center of gravity too far out so the holder ends up working its way out of the vent due to vibration. Doesn't help that the ends of the clamp eventually splay apart slightly so you're left with about a 1/3 of the clamp area gripping the vent slat.

Original version only allowed rotation left/right which was fine for the angle my vents were at.

      Agree 100%

This has happened on all 4 of the holders that I purchased after a few months.

If I go around a corner to fast the holder will slide of the vent and my phone will end up on the floor.

Agreed. I have both versions and version 2 is almost useless.

    • This is exactly what I experienced with a 4" phone. I couldn't get too mad, though - only paid a couple of dolalrs for it!

  • My actual order went through this time!!!

Have this for my iphone 6 and is great!

  • +1

    FYI great unit!

    Impossible price!

    • +2

      Impossible price!

      Apparently not!

  • Bought 6 in a yellow.

    I approve of these!

  • +1

Bought 2 last year took 2 months to arrive.

    • you should email them. My aliexpress order normally take from 2 weeks to 4 weeks

  • +1

Shows as $4.97 USD, sold out?

    • yep same

      • Same

    • Only the yellow is one sale. Maybe that sold out too.

  • Works good. Had this for year. I used it for my iPhone 7 originally, then updated to iPhone XS Max and it was fine even with case on.

  • Missed out on the deal. Tempted to pay the regular price if it's as good as people say.

Really only good if your vents incline towards the windscreen so the weight of the holder/phone keep it in place.
If your vents are close to vertical the center of gravity being so far from the vent will slowly cause it to fall out.

This has pretty much happened with all the ball jointed vent holders I've tried in my car, including this one.

Here's a comparison image with the original version:
      https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/8952/65962/img_2019011…

That's a new unused one in the image, have another in the car that has failed as above and haven't bothered installing this one knowing the same thing will happen.

Still, they are better than the crappy Baseus versions, which only lasted a week.

  • Still available. I just bought one for $1.70 USD

  • Still avail. Mine is 2.18AUD should be a few cent if using the app

  • Wow, Thanks for posting OP. These are great, been using them for about 8 months now and still work fine

  • +1

I wouldn't waste my money on this, get a magnetic phone holder instead

  • Pretty sure this reduced price has expired. It's back to US $2.19 including GST (around AU $3.06). Still bought one anyway as I find them reasonable for the price (not perfect, the earlier version starts falling apart after 6 months so hopefully this is better, but personally I prefer it to having a metal plate stuck to the back of my phone for the magnetic holders).
