All these years later, when ever I see a Wilson ball, I hear Tom Hanks screaming in my head.

There must be so much pointless crap inside my head.

Haha, great movie. Also great blatant product placement with Wilson and FedEx

Came to expect this comment; was not disappointed.

  • I got myself a Au bargain Dremel, about to do some DIY dentistry. Would one of these balls be a suitable assistant?

    • You'll have to fill it with ballistics gel.

  • I picked up 2 spaldings in the hard rubbish tonight walking past. Score

  • What is it about the ball that makes it only suitable for indoor use, vs an indoor and outdoor one.

    • +1

Durability. It's softer so you get better touch, but put it outdoors and it'll wear out super quick.

      • +2

outdoor (concrete) courts tear genuine leather up

      • Is there any difference in terms of bounciness? I've got a UA 595 Indoor/Outdoor, seems extra bouncy, but perhaps that's because I'm using it on concrete.

        • Outdoor balls are usually made from rubber and therefore bouncier. You can always let some air out anyway.

          • @nakata: So for indoor use would my rubber ball still be bouncier than the leather one?

            • +2

@marquise: im not sure i agree with the above regarding bounciness and durability.

              its actually about price.

the cheapest balls are made from rubber only
mid priced balls are made from composite leather
there is only 1 ball that i know of that is full grain leather and that is the offical nba game ball

              https://www.spalding.com.au/basketballs/basketball/nba/offic…

So in terms of durability I actually feel all the balls wear around the same amount maybe the leather balls actually even wear a bit better; however the cheap rubber ball only costs $15 whereas the leather balls can cost 2-3-10x more.

And when people say grippyness I feel there is also a difference to that.
Rubber ball will feel largely the same new or used; however the feel of the ball feels incredibly cheap even new.

composite leather ball will feel great new but once it starts wearing the texture will change

that nba ball is actually the best at resisting that change and wears the best on an outdoor court but nobody is crazy enough to use a $200 ball outdoors.

If you are serious about playing outdoors; there is no way you'd play with a rubber ball.
Most people find a composiite ball that wears in a way they are happy with.

This wilson evolution ball is probably considered one of the top composite balls

              • @voter1: Molten gf7x or gg7x are also really good composite balls.

        • Sorry for all the questions about balls guys

Can someone recommend a good outdoor ball? I've got a Spalding that I've been using on gravel that is begging for mercy.

    • Nike makes a decent outdoor ball. I think It's called supergrip. Spalding also has a few balls that are designed for both indoor and outdoor, and they're good for outdoor use.

    • We got the Molten outdoor ball last time it was on special. Used on concrete. Super grippy too.

    • I think there all pretty good but unless its rubber they wont last long. Have a never flat that is 4 years old in bad nick, but cant pump it up so it's always slightly flat.

Costco in Epping, Vic has a size 7 indoor/outdoor Spalding ball for under $20. Seems like an absolute bargain to me.
