they are really kicking out some good free games atm..
    … whats the catch ?!

    • +9

I don't see any catch. Other than the fact that you'll have to install yet another launcher on your PC which is annoying as hell especially for MP games that get updated often.

Lets see, I have Steam, Battle.Net, GoG, Origin, Uplay, Whatever the hell Bethesda is using, and now Epic.
7 clients.. literally almost 1000 games..
.. then I mostly play WoW and old classics like Fallout 1 / Baldurs Gate 0.o

I'm glad Steam can't be a monopoly, even if it means multiple logins and the pain of adding friends. Their prices are very average and for a long time their refund system was horrible.

@unelectric: There was a TIME, when the Australia doller was strong and Steam christmas sales were actually still good (Typically time limited affairs.. 6 hour Windows..)
I mean I still havnt played 80% of the things I purchased.. but damn they were good bargains =)

          You should check out Playnite

"Playnite is open source video game library manager with one simple goal: To provide a unified interface for all of your games. … with support for 3rd party libraries like Steam, Battle.net, GOG, Origin and Uplay. Including game emulation support."

          • @sk3iron: One to rule them all and in the darkness bind them ?
            Nice, I'll cheggit. Cheers.

To hook new users to platform, give away free games tied to platform. Its a loss lender for other games for purchase.

Downside to these platforms, if you're banned, piss them off, hacked, they close servers, change PC; you lose all those games tied to your account.

Most people have been fooled by the game platform industry in thinking they're buying games. In reality, its purchasing a private licence to the game. I rather call it leasing the game.

      • The first 2 games they gave away (Subnautica and SMB) can run without the launcher/an internet connection; there's no way for them to revoke access.
(The latter 2 games I've yet to try.)

      • technically you dont own software, youre licensed to use it

      • At least it's semi-permanent unlike EA's premium subscription "Origin Access Premier" shudder

Nothing the more choice the better. They will compete on price and better EULA, maybe one of them will even let us sell or transfer out games to other users. (For a small fee/cut)

Plus I've endured the years of the buggy steam refusing to connect, and crashing on connect.

Just the other day one of games was unexpectedly uninstalled, fortunately the data files remained behind.
